Some people do not like anything to be out of place. They are never late for work. They return their books to the library on time. They remember people’s birthdays, and they pay their bills as soon as they arrive. Mr. Rock is such a person.

Mr. Rock works in a bank, and lives on his own. The only family he has is in the next town. His sister lives there with her husband, and her son, Mark. Mr. Rock does not see his sister or her family every year, but he sends them Christmas cards and he has not forgotten one of Mark’s seventeen birthdays.

He parked his car where he always parks it, out of the way of other cars, and went inside to make his evening meal. Straight away, there was a knock at the door. Mr. Rock opened the door only to find a policeman on the door step.

If you judge by the number of people who go to see the games and by the number of those who actually play it, basketball is probably the most popular sport in the United States today. It is mainly an indoor game, and the season extends from late autumn, through the winter, to early spring. There are many professional teams; but for the most part, basketball is a school sport. There is hardly a high school or college in the country that does not have its team.

In spring and summer, the most popular sport is baseball. During the warm weather, you can see young men and boys playing this game in any part of the country. Radio and television bring the details of the big games to every corner of that land, and the activities of the professional teams are a subject of conversation for Americans

Passage 9

Many people think New York is a noisy city. The noise level comes from having so many people and cars in the same area. Now even the insides of taxis are noisy. When you are get into a taxi, you hear voices saying things such as buckling your seat belt, “ Don’t forget to collect all your belongings.”, and so on.

There is a good reason for the messages. There are more than 12 000 cabs in New York, and every year taxis get into more than 15 000 accidents. Every year, about 11 ,000 people get injured in this way.

Many people are annoyed by the voices. Cabdrivers in particular dislike the messages. “I play the messages 12 hours a day. I hear the same voices 60 times a day. It makes me crazy,” says Amir, a 45-year-old cabdriver. “But if I don’t play the messages, I get fined $100.” A lot of passengers complain, too. “It’s too much noise,” says a passenger. “I asked the driver to turn off the messages, but he said he can’t.”

Other people think the voices are a great idea. One taxi driver says, “People like to hear the famous voices, and they put on their seat belts more often.” And passengers from out of town really like the idea. “Most of the time, taxi drivers are in a bad mood,” says Melanie Benton, who visits New York often on business. “It’s nice to hear a cheerful voice when you get into a cab.”

Passage 10

I see four kinds of pressure working on college students today: economic pressure, parental pressure, peer pressure, and self-induced pressure. It is easy to look around for villains---- to blame the colleges for charging too much money, the professors for assigning too much work, the parents for pushing their children too far, the students for driving themselves too hard. But there are no villains, only victims.

They know that entrance into the better schools will be an entrance into the better law firms and better medical practices where they will make a lot of money. They also know that it is very hard to achieve success both in life and in study.

The pressure is almost as heavy on students who just want to graduate and get a job. They live in a brutal economy. Along with economic pressure goes parental pressure. Inevitably, the two are deeply intertwined(缠绕在一起). Poor students, poor parents. They are caught in one of the oldest webs of love and duty and guilt. The parents mean well; they are trying to steer their sons and daughters toward a secure future. Many parents would rather put their money on courses that point toward a specific profession____ courses that are pre-law, pre-medical, pre-business, or, as I sometimes heard it put, “pre-rich.”

But the pressure on students is severe. They are truly torn. One part of them feels dutiful to fulfill their parents’ expectations; after all, their parents are older and

15

presumably wiser. Another part tells them that the expectations that are right for their parents are not right for them.

Peer pressure and self-induced pressure are also intertwined, and they begin almost at the beginning of freshman year. Part of the problem is that they do more than they are expected to do. When a teacher gets more and more efforts from his class, the student who is doing normal work can be perceived not doing well. The tactic(战术) works, psychologically.

Ultimately it will be the students’ own business to break the circles in which they are trapped. They must believe in themselves as unique men and women who have the power to shape their own future.

46. The pressures working on college students, according to the passage, are ________.

A. economic and parental pressure B. peer and self-induced pressure

C. pressure from very difficult courses D. both A and B

47. From the passage, we may say, the author thinks that ________.

A. it is right for the parents to drive their children extremely hard in order to have a secure future

B. parents and their children have different ideas about their expectations C. college students are willing to do whatever their parents tell them to

D. although parents are poor, they still try to put their money on their sons’ and daughters’ education

48. According to the passage, who are to blame for the college pressures?

A. The parents.

B. The colleges and professors. C. The students and their peers. D. The author does not say it.

49. From the passage, we may conclude that ________.

A. in the author’s view, none but the students can solve their own problem B. the students need these pressures

C. the teachers like to put more pressures on their students D. the author thinks that college pressures are something good

50. According to the passage, by “self-induced pressure” the author means that

________.

A. the parents want their children to major in pre-rich courses B. college students want to fulfill their parents’ expectations C. college students want to do more than they are expected to do

16

D. their peers force them to work harder
