Skimming and scanning When you have a specific question to answer or information to collect, you need to be able to skim a page quickly to find the section you need. You can do this by scanning a text for a keyword. Can you define the three highlighted words above? Skim: to read for the main ideas and a general Keyword: a word overview of the content of importance. Skimming for the Main IdeaSkimming is useful in 3 different situations. 1.Pre-read: Skimming can give a more accurate picture of text to be read later. 2.Reviewing: skimming is useful for reviewing text already read.

3.Reading: skimming is most often used for quickly reading material that does not need more detailed attention. (Flip through a new book or magazine; Keepinformed in a general way about the news.)
