After spending a year in Brazil on a student exchange program, her mother recalled,Marie Colvin returned home to find that her classmates had narrowed down their college choices.“Everyone else was already admitted to college,”her mother,Rosemarie Colvin, said from the family home.“So she took our car and drove up to Yale and said,‘You_have_to_let_me_in.’”
“Impressed-she was a National Merit (全国英才)finalist who had picked up Portuguese in Brazil-Yale did, admitting her to the class of 1978,where she started writing for the Yale Daily News and decided to be a journalist,” her mother said. On Wednesday,Marie Colvin,56,an experienced journalist for The Sunday Times of London, was killed as Syrian forces shelled the city of Homs. She was working in a temporary media center that was destroyed in the attack.
“She was supposed to leave Syria on Wednesday”,Mrs.Colvin said.“Her editor told me he called her yesterday and said it was getting too dangerous and they wanted to take her out.She said she was doing a story and she wanted to finish it.”

James Cooke,of Islip,N.Y.,can't recognize other people.“I see eyes, nose, cheekbones, but no face,”he said.“I've even passed by my son and daughter without recognizing them.”
He is not the only one. Those with prosopagnosia, also known as face blindness, can see perfectly well, but their brains are unable to piece together the information needed to understand that a collection of features represents an individual's face. The condition is a neurological (神经病学的)mystery, but new research has shed light on this strange disease.
Some scientists had believed that faces and voices, the two main ways people recognize one another, were processed separately by the brain.Indeed,a condition parallel to prosopagnosia, called phonagnosia, similarly leaves a person unable to distinguish a familiar voice from an unfamiliar one.But by testing for these two conditions at the same time, researchers at the Max Planck Institute recently found evidence that face and voice recognition may be linked in a unique person recognition system.
The scientists observed the brain activity of 19 healthy volunteers as they were led
through tasks that tested their ability to recognize both faces and voices. The researchers found that regions of the brain, associated with face recognition, are directly linked to regions responsible for voice recognition.
This research helps explain why a person with prosopagnosia may still have difficulty determining who a person is even after he has begun to speak. The challenge for scientists is to find out where this system breaks down. Are these connections in the brain missing entirely,or are people unable to recognize faces and voices simply unable to use these links in some way?
It is unclear how many people have these conditions. Many don't even realize they have problems with face or voice recognition. While some develop these difficulties after a brain injury, others develop it in childhood.
61.James Cooke can't recognize other people because________. A.his eyesight is failing B.he prefers to walk hurriedly C.he suffers from face blindness D.he can't tell facial expression 62.Which of the following is true of prosopagnosia?

A.different regions of the brain have to work separately B.people with phonagnosia are good at face recognition C.regions of the brain for person recognition are connected D.person recognition is controlled by the same part of the brain 65.What can we know from the last two paragraphs?
A.The causes of the two diseases have been discovered recently. B.The scientists are quite satisfied with the evidence and findings. C.Some people have problems with both face and voice recognition. D.A lot of patients have been assisted medically and psychologically.

Lill was a young French Canadian girl who grew up in the farming community. At the age of 16,her father thought that she had enough schooling and forced her to drop out
of school to contribute to the family income. In 1922,with limited education and skills, the future didn't look bright for Lill. Her father demanded that Lill find a job as soon as possible, but she didn't have the confidence to ask for a job.
One day,Lill gathered her courage and knocked on her very first door. She was met by Margaret Costello, the office manager. In her broken English,Lill told her she was interested in the secretarial position.Margaret decided to give her a chance.
Margaret sat her down at a typewriter and said,“Lill, let's see how good you really are.”She directed Lill to type a single letter, and then left.Lill looked at the clock and saw that it was 11:40 am.Everyone would be leaving for lunch at noon. She thought she should at least attempt the letter.
On her first try,she got through one line but made four mistakes. She pulled the paper out and threw it away. The clock now read 11:45.“At noon,”she said to herself,“I'll move out with the crowd, and they will never see me again.”

Lill was surprised. She looked at the letter, then up at Margaret. With those simple words of encouragement, her desire to escape disappeared and her confidence began to grow. She thought,“Well,if she thinks it's good, then it must be good.I think I'll stay!”

In the past year, the number of parenting contracts-statements signed by parents agreeing to bring their child to school-has gone up by 41% to 6,861.The number of court-issued punishment notices went up by 12% to 7,793 last year.
The Department for Children,Schools and Families said that part of the rise was due to a ban on parents taking their child out of school during term time to go on holiday. The Labour government has a target to cut truancy (逃学) by a third, but the current rate of unauthorised absence in England is a third higher than in 2001.
The government has introduced tough new permission to force parents to deal with
their child's truancy.Parents can be fined, asked to sign contracts,or ordered to make their child go to school. Finally they can be sent to prison. The first parent to be put in prison was Patricia Amos, from Banbury,Oxfordshire,in 2006.Separate figures from the Ministry of Justice today show that 133 parents were put in prison between 2004 and 2011 for failing to prevent their child's truancy.
Children's Minister Delyth Morgan said:“It's important that we back schools and local authorities in using these powers to deal with problem pupils and bad behaviour. They rightly make parents take responsibility for their children. These latest figures show that schools and local authorities continue to make good use of these measures.”
David Laws, the Liberal Democrat education spokesman, said:“While parents need to take responsibility for their children's behaviour and have the duty to ensure they attend school, truancy rates across the country remain sky high. What is needed is a more effective local approach involving parents, schools and the police.Extra money to cut class sizes and provide more one-to-one support will enable teachers to work with individual children and make sure that they are occupied in the classroom.” 56.Parenting contracts are signed to________.

When Boris left school,he could not find a job.He tried hard and pestered(纠缠)his relatives, but they had problems of their own.He answered advertisements until he could not afford to buy any more stamps.Boris grew annoyed, then depressed, then a little hardened.Still he went on trying and still he failed. He began to think that he had no future at all.
“Why don't you start your own business?”one of his uncles told him.“The world is a money-locker.You'd better find a way of opening it.” “But what can I do?”
“Get out and have a look round,”advised his uncle in a vague sort of way.“See what people want;then give it to them, and they will pay for it.”
Boris began to cycle around the town and found a suitable piece of waste ground in the end. Then he set up his business as a cycle repairer. He worked hard, made friends with his customers and gradually managed to build up his goodwill and profit.A few months later,he found that he had more work than he could deal with by himself. He found a number of empty shops but they were all no good:in the wrong position, too expensive or with some other snags (障碍).But at long last,he managed to find an empty shop on a new estate where there were plenty of customers but no competition.
Boris and his assistant taught themselves how to repair scooters and motorcycles.Slowly but surely the profits increased and the business developed. At last,Boris had managed to open the money-locker and found bank notes and gold coins inside.

“Confidence” is probably one of the most noticeable traits(特点)in the Americans. They show confidence in the way they talk, the way they smile, the way they dress and the way they walk.Living and competing with all these confident
American students,I find it extremely important to be confident as an international
student and a foreign instructor. As a student, being confident means you should never hesitate to raise your hand whenever a question or a point comes to your mind.Don't mind if it sounds simple or silly.Otherwise you will never get a chance to speak in class at all. What's worse, the professors may think you are not prepared for the discussion or you do not have your own opinion on the issue-this is the last comment any graduate would like to receive.
Being confident for me as a foreign instructor means calmly asking the student to repeat what he or she has said if I did not get it.Pretending to understand what you actually do not may just bring yourself embarrassment or even disgrace. But the time I
most need to be confident is when my students come to my office and bargain about the grades I have given for their speeches (The course I'm teaching here is Public Speaking).Modesty is a trait highly valued in China, but it won't be of much help here if you want to survive and succeed in a good American graduate program. 66.To compete with American students it's very important to________. A.be quite confident B.be polite and friendly
C.have more discussions with them D.understand what they think about 67.A professor will have the worst opinion of a student who________. A.gives a silly or simple answer B.tries to seize any chance to speak in class C.shows no interest in the course D.is considered to have no opinion of his own 68.The author is most likely to feel embarrassed if________.
A.he asks a student to repeat what he has said B.the students bargain with him C.he pretends to know what he doesn't D.he has to give a speech 69.We learn from the second paragraph that________. A.we should also remain modest in America B.modesty doesn't help you much in America C.Americans also like modest people
D.modesty can help you get through an American graduate program 70.The passage is mainly developed by________. A.providing examples B.making comparisons
C.giving different figures D.telling personal experiences

The world is filled with smart, talented, educated and gifted people. We meet them every day.A few days ago,my car was not running well.I pulled it into a garage, and the young mechanic had it fixed in just a few minutes. He knew what was wrong by simply listening to the engine.I was amazed. The sad truth is that great talent is not enough.
I am constantly shocked at how little talented people earn.I heard the other day that less than 5 percent of Americans earn more than $ 100,000 a year.A business consultant who specializes in the medical trade told me how many doctors and dentists struggled financially. It was this business consultant who gave me the phrase,“They are
one skill away from great wealth.”
There is an old saying that goes,“Job means ‘just over broke (破产)’.” And unfortunately,I would say that the saying applies to millions of people.Because school does not think financial intelligence is intelligence, and most workers “live_within_their_means”.They work and they pay the bills.Instead I recommend young people to seek work for what they will learn, more than what they will earn. When I ask the class I teach,“ How many of you can cook a better hamburger than McDonald's?” almost all the students raise their hands.I then ask,“ So if most of you can cook a better hamburger, how come McDonald's makes more money than you?” The answer is obvious:McDonald's is excellent at business systems. The reason why so many talented people are poor is that they focus on making a better hamburger but know little or nothing about business systems. The world is filled with talented poor people. They focus on perfecting their skills at making a better hamburger rather than the skills of selling and delivering the hamburger.
71.The author mentions the mechanic in the first paragraph to show that________. A.he is just one of the talented people B.he is ready to help others C.he has a sharp sense of hearing D.he knows little about car repairing 72.The underlined part in the third paragraph can be best replaced by“________”. A.spend more than they can afford B.do in their own way C.live in their own circle D.live within what they earn 73.Why do talented people earn so little according to the author? A.They don't work hard enough. B.They lack financial intelligence.
C.They don't make full use of their talents. D.They have no specialized skills. 74.The success of McDonald's lies in its________. A.skills at making hamburgers B.good business systems C.talented workers D.excellent service
75.The main purpose of the author is to tell us________.
A.how young people can find a satisfactory job B.what schools should teach students
C.why so many talented people are poor D.how McDonald's makes much money

After moving to the United States, immigrant groups trying to fit in tend to choose high-calorie fatty foods in an attempt to appear more American,a new study finds. That's one reason why immigrants approach US levels of obesity within 15 years of moving to America.
The researchers also did an experiment that measured whether or not the threat of appearing unAmerican influenced respondents' food choices. After being questioned about their ability to speak English,75 percent of Asian-Americans identified a typical American food as their favorite.Only 25 percent of Asian-Americans who had not been asked if they spoke English did the same.
When their American identity was called into question during a follow-up study,Asian-American participants also tended to choose typical American dishes, such as hamburgers and cheese sandwiches. In that experiment,55 Asian-Americans were asked to choose a meal from a local Asian or American restaurant. Some participants were told that only Americans could participate in the study. Those who chose the more typical American fare ended up consuming an extra 182 calories, including 12 grams of fat and 7 grams of saturated fat(饱和脂肪).
“People who feel like they need to prove they belong to a culture will change their habits in an attempt to fit in,” said Sauna Cheryan,an author of the study and assistant professor of psychology at University of Washington.“If immigrants and their children choose unhealthy American foods over healthier traditional foods across their lives, this process of fitting in could lead to poorer health.” Cheryan added. Social pressures, the study concluded, are at the heart of the problem.“In American

An average 30-year-old person who has eaten three meals a day since birth has eaten more than 30,000 meals to date.Even if you’ve only eaten half that much you have to admit this:you’ve let some of that breakfast, lunch or dinner go to waste. And it turns out we're all to blame for this shaming fact:30% of all food produced in the world each year is wasted or lost. That’s about 1.3 billion tons, according to a new report by
the U.N.Food and Agriculture Organization.
That's the weight of more than 8.6 million full-grown blue whales, the largest creatures on earth. That's the weight of more than 2.3 million Airbus A380s,the largest planes in existence. That's as if each person in China, the world's most populous country with more than 1.3 billion people, had one ton mass of food they could just throw into the dustbin. It's almost unfathomable, isn't it?
Setting aside that big number,we find the people with the most money are the ones who waste the most.Per capita (人均),European and North American countries waste between 95 and 115 kilograms of food.Sub-Saharan African,South Asian and Southeast Asian countries waste much, much less-between 6 and 11 kilograms per person.
Here's another statistic:all the food that the world's richest countries waste is about equal to all the food that subSaharan Africa produces. The numbers:222 million tons and 230 million tons, respectively (分别地).Basically, the wasted food of the rich could feed much of the African continent. And these numbers come as we've just been reporting about rising food prices around the world in the past week.
And my own personal tip:if I eat at a restaurant and can't finish it all,I ask for a doggie bag.I used to be a waiter years ago and will never forget the amounts of food I saw left on the table after the bill was paid. There's no reason to waste food. It's up to all of us to use our common sense to eat and shop just a bit more wisely.
61.According to the U.N.Food and Agriculture Organization, how much food do people produce each year in the world?
A.About 3.3 billion tons. B.About 3.9 billion tons. C.About 4.3 billion tons. D.About 5.6 billion tons.
62.What does the underlined word “ unfathomable” in Paragraph 2 mean? A.Possible to imagine. B.Impossible to change. C.Impossible to understand. D.Possible to understand.
63.It can be learned that the food the rich waste can support________. A.half the people in Europe B.most people of America C.most people of Asia D.most people of Africa
64.The author gave his personal tip based on the fact that________.
A.he was once very poor B.he was once a farmer
C.he once worked in a restaurant D.the price of food is very high 65.What is the purpose of this article?
A.To show the author's opinion of food. B.To let us live more wisely and not waste food.
C.To show the amount of wasted food a year. D.To ask the richest countries to help African people.

You could fill the sky with all the ideas people have had for flying cars,or what Carl Dietrich calls“flying-driving vehicles”.Carl Dietrich said,“Since the turn of the 20th century, there have been hundreds of published concepts for flying-driving vehicles. And some of them have actually been built and flown. But at this point the Transition is the closest to actually getting to the marketplace.”
Carl Dietrich heads a company in Massachusetts called Terrafugia. He said,“Terrafugia is developing the Transition street-legal airplane, which many people have characterized as the first practical flying car.”
Carl Dietrich says the Transition Roadable Aircraft easily changes to a car.He said,“It takes about twenty seconds. It's like puffing the top down on a convertible (敞篷车);only instead of folding up your roof,we're folding up our wings and we're transferring power from a propeller (螺旋桨) to the wheels for driving on the ground.”
Development began in 2006,and the first road and flight tests took place in 2009.The Transition had to meet federal safety standards for cars and aircrafts.Last year the Federal Aviation Administration agreed to let it weigh more than other light sport aircrafts. But even fully loaded, says Mr.Dietrich,it just weighs about half as much as an average car.
Carl Dietrich says the aircraft can climb to more than three thousand meters. It can carry two people at speeds over one hundred and sixty kilometers an hour in the
air.And on the ground it can drive at highway speeds, around one hundred and thirteen kilometers an hour. The plane needs an airport for take-offs and landings, which can be a problem if the buyer doesn't have a private airport. But it uses automotive gasoline. The company expects to complete the building process for its flying cars within the next few months. Then it will begin a year-long testing program.Terrafugia expects the Transition to reach the market by the end of 2012,at a price of around two hundred and fifty thousand dollars.
66.According to Carl Dietrich,Terrafugia is trying to________.
A.develop cars to increase their running speeds B.publish concepts for flying-driving vehicles
C.produce practical flying cars D.prove that cars can fly 67.Paragraph 3 shows that the Transition Roadable Aircraft________. A.looks smaller than a normal car B.doesn't have a roof like a normal car C.will be very difficult to operate at first D.can be used both in the sky and on the ground
68.What might be a problem that the Transition Roadable Aircraft will face? A.It can only carry the driver.
B.There will not be proper gasoline for it C.It will weigh too much to fly in the sky.
D.There will not be enough places for its take-offs and landings. 69.The last paragraph shows that________.
A.flying cars will not be in wide use B.flying cars will be put into use quite soon C.the future market of the flying cars is not bright D.flying cars will still be a dream for a long time
70.What's the main idea of this passage?
A.Flying cars will replace airplanes. B.Flying cars move closer to reality. C.Flying cars are ready for the market. D.Flying cars have been built before.

Before the opening of the Cape Cod Canal in 1914,the only way ships could leave Boston was on a route around Race Point-the northern tip of Cape Cod.However, navigation during the 18th century was a nightmare, because the floating cross current
(交叉气流) around Race Point caused countless accidents. So building a lighthouse to lighten the place was very necessary.
As early as 1808,the people of Provincetown requested a lighthouse on Race Point, but it took Congress eight years to react when they finally paid $ 8,000 on April 27,1816 to build a lighthouse-Race Point Light, which was located in the town of Provincetown,Massachusetts. It was first built of stone 25 feet high with no foundation and its light was 30 feet above the sea.It was equipped with one of the nation's earliest revolving lights.
Actually, there were two other lighthouses on Cape Cod,but they were hit by a storm in October 1841.In the following year,Race Point Light was examined by I.W.P.Lewis,who realized the light's importance. He said,“The light should be useful to all ships leaving Boston. However, its illuminating power is so weak that people would hardly be able to differentiate it from the lights set on the ships which stay in the bay,or close by.It hasn't played its role as a lighthouse well.”
The result was that old lighthouse was destroyed and a new iron lighthouse with a proper foundation was put up to take its place. The new lighthouse was 45 feet high.Although the original keeper's house was in good repair,it was destroyed too,and a new one was built.Today the lighthouse has been automated(自动化)and Race Point Light is still an active aid to navigation.
You can park at Race Point Beach and walk about 45 minutes to the lighthouse.Sunset at Race Point Light is one of the Cape Cod's most popular scenes. And at times whales can be seen in the lighthouse. For reservations to stay one night in the keeper's house at Race Point call (508)487-9930.
71.The underlined word “illuminating” in Paragraph 3 probably means________. A.preventing accidents B.cooling the air C.providing light D.predicting weather
72.Why was the original Race Point Light replaced by a new one?
A.It was too old to repair properly. B.It hadn't done a good job in helping the passing ships.
C.It was destroyed in a storm in October 1841. D.It wasn't high enough and had no foundation.
