According to a report recently, there are approximately 25.6 million teens in the U.S. market and the amount of money they have to spend every year continues to grow. It is estimated that teens have an average annual income of anywhere from $2,000 to $4,000. Even though teens might not spend every dollar that they receive from jobs, allowances, or from their parents, the amount of money they have to spend is significant. It is estimated that in 2014 teens will spend more than 260 billion dollars.

A 2012 study done by Seventeen magazine revealed some facts about how teens spend their money. Here are some of the findings:

Teens want actual items. Most teens would rather have an actual item, such as new clothes, rather than something that they can't put their hands on. According to the study, 75 percent would rather have a new pair of shoes than 50 new MP3 downloads, and 63 percent would choose a new pair of jeans over tickets to a concert.

Teens are savvy shoppers. Teens are skeptical and don't buy into the usual marketing messages. While they want the latest and greatest items, they are also willing to wait. Approximately 55 percent of teens wait for items to go on sale, and 50 percent of teens make fewer impulse purchases. Another 42 percent are more willing to comparison shop for the best price.

Teens love to shop. Teens have big purchasing power in a household. Their willingness to spend money and obtain the latest items makes them one of the largest spending demographics of consumer goods.

A federal safety agency wants to send a message to all drivers in the United States: keep your attention on the road. The National Transportation Safety Board has called for a nationwide ban on the use of portable electronic devices while driving. The proposal by the NTSB would not ban emergency uses or the use of what it calls \

Across the country, different states have different levels of restrictions on texting or talking on the phone while driving.

The safety board called for the nationwide ban last month after meeting to discuss a deadly accident. It happened in two thousand ten in Missouri. A pickup truck drove into the back of a bigger truck that had slowed for road work. A school bus then struck the pickup truck, and a second school bus crashed into the first one.

To become a doctor in the United States, students usually attend four years of medical school after they complete college. Then these young doctors work in hospitals for several years to complete a training program called a residency(住院医生实习期).

These medical residents provide hospitals with needed services in return for not much pay. They work under the supervision of medical professors and more experienced doctors. Medical residents treat patients. They carry out tests. They perform operations. They complete records. In hospitals with few nurses, residents also do work formerly done by nurses. Some medical residents work one hundred or more hours in a single week. They often work for more than thirty-six hours at a time before they can rest.

Critics of this system say medical residents work too long and do not get enough rest. They say these young doctors may be too tired to perform their medical duties effectively. Now the government will limit the number of hours of work that residents can work. Most doctors in training will be limited to eighty-four hours of work each week. They will have work periods of no more than twenty-four hours at one time. They will have ten hours of rest between work periods.

Many medical residents welcomed the work limits. Others, However, said the new policy may interfere with patient care and their own medical education.

68. If a first-year collage student in America wants to be a doctor, he may has to wait for A. 4 years B. 6 years C. over 10 years D. over 20 years 69. Medical residents are not responsible for . A. supervising students B. treating patients C. carrying out tests D. doing operations

Congress passed the Americans with Disabilities Act, known as the ADA, more than 20 years ago. The law made it easier for people with disabilities to get jobs and use public transportation and public buildings.

There are many success stories, but overall not very much has changed in the job market. Seventy percent of people with severe disabilities are still not working, about the same as 20 years ago.

The unemployment rate for people with a disability was 15 percent in 2011. This was well above the 8.7 percent unemployment rate for people without disabilities.

The Census Bureau reports that between 2008 and 2010, people without disabilities were about three times more likely to be employed than those with disabilities. People with disabilities represented 6 percent of the civilian labor force.

More than half of all workers with a disability work in four general occupation groups. These are service workers, administrative support, sales workers, and management, business and finance.

8

Marian Vessels is director of the Mid-Atlantic ADA Center, which provides training and assistance to employers and employees. She says one big problem is that neither employers nor employees with disabilities feel comfortable talking about a disability.

Ms. Vessels says people with disabilities need to speak up. They need to believe in themselves to get a job and the accommodations they need to do the job well.

An accommodation is an action taken by an employer to help people with a disability do a job. For example, maybe you need a wider office space so your wheelchair fits next to your desk. Maybe you need to use your voice instead of the keyboard to type on a computer. 72. Congress passed the Americans with Disabilities Act in order to . A. help all the citizens in America

B. provide convenience for the disabled C. ban prejudice against the disabled

D. to improve employment rate for the disabled 73. What can we infer from the second paragraph?

74. According to Ms. Vessels, which of the following is not important for the disabled to find jobs?

A. self-confidence B. support from the government C. media like Internet D. special care from the employers 75. The passage is likely to appear .

A. in a newspaper B. in a biography C. in a commercial ad D. in a travel book

Family structure had changed dramatically over the last 50 years. The following are the types of families existing today. Nuclear Family

The nuclear family is a traditional type of family structure. This family type consists of mother, father and children. The nuclear family was long held in esteem by society as being the ideal in which to raise children because children in nuclear families receive strength and stability from the two-parent structure. Single Parent Family

The single parent family consists of one parent raising one or more children on his own. When only one parent is at home, it may be a struggle to find childcare, as there is only one parent working. This limits income and opportunities in many cases, although many single parent families have help from relatives and friends. Extended Family

The extended family structure consists of two or more adults who are related, either by blood

9

or marriage, living in the same home. This family includes many relatives living together and working toward common goals. This type of family structure may be formed due to financial difficulties or because older relatives are unable to care for themselves alone. Childless Family

While most people think of family as including children, there are couples who either cannot or choose not to have children. Many childless families take on the responsibility of pet ownership or have extensive contact with their nieces and nephews as a substitute for having their own children. Stepfamily

Over half of all marriages end in divorce, and many of these individuals choose to get remarried. This creates the stepfamily, which involves two separate families merging into one new unit. Stepfamilies tend to have more problems, such as adjustment periods and discipline issues. There is no right or wrong answer when it comes to what is the best type of family structure. As long as a family is filled with love and support for one another, it tends to be successful and thrive. Every time I enjoy the song, I can’t hold back the tears in my eyes. To provide me with better educational opportunities, my parents have always been overworking without any complaints. Exhausting as his work was, my father always took me to school by bike when I was very young. I also owe my gratitude to my mother, who is always there whenever I have trouble. It’s only when we find their grey hair and wrinkles that we realize they’re getting older. As a student, I can’t afford to buy them expensive gifts now, but I can help with their housework. What’s more , I’m determined to work harder to let them feel proud of me in the future.
