11. The British Museum, the Biggest Museum in the World

The British Museum is the biggest one in the world. Inside, you feel smaller than usual. There are about a hundred things in the museum to see. Clocks which have been telling the time for six hundred years, Roman money, some of the earliest books in the world, including Shakespeare's own works...

The British Museum was founded nearly 300 years ago by a doctor, Sir Hans Sloane. The man liked to collect such things as books, drawings, clothes, money, animals, flowers, and also hoped that his things would be well kept and so visited by people after his death.

His wish came true, and the museum opened in 1759, six years after Sir Hans Sloane died.

Later, more old things arrived at the museum, more books, old and new, came to it, and more people wanted to visit it. All this made Pauizzi design the famous round Reading Room. There was something unusual in the room. Cool air came up through small holes in the tables. Hot air flowing under the floor kept readers' feet warm. Since its opening, many famous men have written and studied there. And the library is growing faster and faster—there are four kilometres of new shelves each year!

The British Museum has changed a lot. It is now open every day of the year, except for three holidays. Entrance is free. There are lots of special exhibitions and every day there are different films and talks, some of them for children. Small machines tell you about the museum and as you walk around it, you can look and listen at the same time. So if you are one of the British Museum's two million visitors this year, don't try to see it all too quickly. There is a lifetime of looking in the British Museum.

One of the most famous bridges in the world is the Golden Gate Bridge that extends across San Francisco Bay. Since it was built in 1937, it has become one of the first sights people see if they are coming to San Francisco by ship. The main part of the Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension span. It hangs from steel ropes that are supported by two huge towers, one at each end of the bridge. The suspension span was the longest in 1937. It measures 4,200 feet between the towers. The floor of the bridge is wide enough for six cars to pass. There are sidewalks, too, but not many people use them. It takes a lot of time to go on foot from one end of the bridge to the other.

The years since 1950 have been called the time of giant bridges. Most of them have been built in the United States. The Mackinac Bridge in upper Michigan was finished in 1958. It is a suspension bridge, with foundations resting on rock 200 feet below the surface of the water. With a span of 3,800 feet, it was second in length to the Golden Gate Bridge.

In 1964 the longest and heaviest suspension bridge was completed in New York City. Known as the Verrazano-Narrow Bridge, it carries traffic between Staten Island and Brooklyn, parts of the city of New York.

These and other big bridges have been made possible partly by changes in materials. From the use of stone in early bridges, bridge budding progressed to iron in 1800, and from iron to steel in 1880. There are other factors, too, that have made for progress in bridge building. New tools have been developed. New construction techniques and a better understanding of the science of bridge building have helped to make modern bridges stronger, safer, and more beautiful. Comprehension Questions:
