Impact on the System During the Upgrade

Impact on Services

During an AP upgrade, services are interrupted for about 20 minutes. The data is the test data in the lab. The actual AP upgrade time depends on the network environment. Impact on Network Communication

When the system restarts, the communication between the switch and the NMS is interrupted. The communication interruption time is the same as the service interruption time.

Impact on the System After the Upgrade

?

The Telnet function is disabled, but the STelnet function is enabled in the factory settings.

After a device of V200R005C00SPC200 or an earlier version is upgraded to

V200R005C10 or later, the Telnet function is disabled in the factory settings. After

factory settings of the device are restored, you need to enable the Telnet function first for Telnet login to the device or you can directly log in to the device using STelnet. You can run the telnet server enable command in the system view to enable Telnet on a Fat AP.

CLI-based upgrade environment

In the command line view, you can use TFTP, FTP, or SFTP to download the system software. Figure 3-1 shows the basic networking diagram for setting up an upgrade environment.

Network cables must be properly connected. The serial interface cables are connected only when the serial interface is used to log in to the device.

The upgrade environment must meet requirements specified in this section; otherwise, an upgrade cannot be implemented. However, this restriction does not apply to the AP8030DN and AP8130DN which can be upgraded as long as they can ping the server on which the upgrade software package is saved.

3 Preparing for the Upgrade

Figure 3-1 Networking for setting up an upgrade environment

NetworkPCFAT AP

Server Starting from V200R003C00SPC200, a fat AP can be remotely upgraded to a target version or switched to a fit AP using the CLI-based upgrade method as long as the following conditions are met:

In the command line view, switching a fit AP to a fat AP cannot be implemented remotely. To remotely upgrade V200R003C00 and V200R003C00SPC100 APs, the PC must be used as a server, the PC's network interface must connect to the AP's network interface, and the PC must be able to communicate with the AP. Figure 3-2 shows the basic networking diagram.

The general requirements for setting up an environment for upgrading the system using TFTP, FTP or SFTP are as follows:

?

If the fat AP connects to the server and telnet client both through Layer 3 networks:

Layer 3 networking means that devices are located in different network segments while Layer 2 networking means that devices are located in the same network segment or in the same VLAN.

?

A route from the fat AP to the server must exist and have the same next hop IP address as the route from the fat AP to the telnet client.

You can run the display ip routing-table command on the AP to check the next hop IP address. For example, if the fat AP's IP address is 192.168.10.13, the server's IP address belongs to the network segment 192.168.20.0/24, the telnet client is on the network segment 192.168.30.0/24, and the next hop IP addresses are all 192.168.10.2, a CLI-based remote upgrade can be implemented.

Files for the upgrade are stored in the server.

The server, fat AP, and telnet client must be in the same network segment or in the same VLAN.

Files for the upgrade are stored in the server.

If the fat AP connects to the server and telnet client both through Layer 2 networks:

? ?

Uboot-based upgrade environment

In the uboot view, you can download the system software only using TFTP. Figure 3-2 shows the basic networking diagram for setting up an upgrade environment.

The general requirements for setting up an environment for Uboot-based upgrade are as follows:

? ? ? ?

In the uboot view, you can log in to the device only through a serial interface.

When a PC functions as a server, the PC's network interface must directly connect to the AP's network interface to ensure that the server and the device can communicate. Files for the upgrade are stored in the server.

The AP8030DN, AP8130DN, and AP9130DN provide two GE interfaces: GE0/0/0 and GE0/0/1. GE0/0/0 has a higher priority than GE0/0/1. When using both GE interfaces to connect to network devices during an AP upgrade, you must connect GE0/0/0 to the upgrade server; otherwise, the AP upgrade fails. When using only one GE interface to connect to the network device, you can use either GE interface to connect to the upgrade server.

After the ap-mode-switch prepare command is run, the system software package of image AP automatically upgrades to that of image B. Then, the AP restarts from image A. If image A and image B both contain system software packages of V200R003, but the system software packages do not belong to the same SPC version, the AP starts from image B. After the ap-mode-switch prepare command is run, the AP restarts from image A. The system software package of image A will not be upgraded to that of image B. Before switching a Fit AP to a Fat AP, upgrade the system software package of image A to that of image B. For details, see FIT AP V200R005C10SPC700 (AC) Upgrade Guide.

4.1.3 Upgrading the AP in TFTP Mode in the U-Boot Software

If the two firmware files of the AP are damaged, upgrade the firmware using TFTP in Uboot mode.

You must use a PC as the TFTP server, and the PC's network interface must directly connect to the AP's network interface.

Configure the TFTP tool and ensure that the AP can ping the PC successfully.

Switching a Fat AP to a Fit AP

5.1 Method to Switch a Fat AP of V200R003&V200R005 to a Fit AP

You can switch a fat AP of V200R003&V200R005 to a fit AP in one of the following ways:

The methods to switch a Fat AP of V200R003 or a Fat AP of V200R005 to a Fit AP are similar.

5.1.1 Upgrading the AP Using Command Lines (Applicable to APs Excluding the AP8x30xN)

5.1.2 Upgrading the AP Using Command Lines (Applicable to the AP8x30xN) 5.1.3 Using the Upgrade Assistant Package to Upgrade the AP (Applicable to APs Excluding the AP8x30xN)

5.1.4 Upgrading the AP in TFTP Mode in the U-Boot Software

This upgrade method is not supported in V200R003C00SPC200 and a later version.

The procedure of 5.1.1 Upgrading the AP Using Command Lines (Applicable to APs

Excluding the AP8x30xN) or 5.1.2 Upgrading the AP Using Command Lines (Applicable to the AP8x30xN)is simple and this mode is recommended.

The default user name and password for logging in to a fit AP or a fat AP of V200R003&V200R005 using command lines are admin and admin@huawei.com. The U-Boot menu default password is admin@huawei.com.

Back up important files before the upgrade.

When upgrading V200R003C00 and V200R003C00SPC100 APs, you must use a PC as the FTP server, TFTP server, or the SFTP server, and the PC's network interface must directly connect to the AP's network interface.

Starting from V200R003C00SPC200, an AP upgrade using command lines is applicable to two remote upgrade scenarios: switching a fat AP to a fit AP and upgrading a fat AP to a target version. To upgrade APs remotely, the networking environment must meet certain requirements. For details, see 3.3 Setting Up the Upgrade Environment.

A device cannot be upgraded if it connects to the server using the secondary IP address.

After a Fit AP is upgraded to V200R005C10SPC700, the Telnet function is disabled in the factory settings. After factory settings are restored, you need to enable the Telnet function first for Telnet login to the device or you can directly log in to the device using STelnet.

FAT AP

Upgrade Guide

6 Upgrading a Fat AP Locally

6 ? ? ? ?

Upgrading a Fat AP Locally

6.1 Method to Upgrade a Fat AP of V200R003&V200R005 Locally

You can upgrade a fat AP locally in one of the following ways:

The methods to locally upgrade a Fat AP of V200R003 and a Fat AP of V200R005 are similar.

6.1.1 Upgrading the AP Using Command Lines (Applicable to APs Excluding the AP8x30xN and AP9x30xN)

6.1.2 Upgrading the AP Using Command Lines (Applicable to the AP8x30xN and AP9x30xN)

6.1.3 Using the Upgrade Assistant Package to Upgrade the AP (Applicable to APs Excluding the AP8x30xN and AP9x30xN)

6.1.4 Upgrading the AP in TFTP Mode in the U-Boot Software

This upgrade method is not supported in V200R003C00SPC200 and a later version.

The procedure of 6.1.1 Upgrading the AP Using Command Lines (Applicable to APs

Excluding the AP8x30xN and AP9x30xN) or 6.1.2 Upgrading the AP Using Command Lines (Applicable to the AP8x30xN and AP9x30xN)is simple and this mode is recommended.

After an AC is upgraded to V200R005C10SPC700, the Telnet function is disabled in the factory settings. After factory settings are restored, you need to enable the Telnet function first for Telnet login to the device or you can directly log in to the device using STelnet.

You can run the telnet server enable command in the system view to enable Telnet on the fat AP.
