Directions: There are two passages in this part. Each passage is followed by five questions. For each questions there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.

Passage 1

The United States is on the verge of losing its leading place in the world?s technology. So says more than one study in recent years. One of the reasons for this decline is the parallel decline in the number of U.S. scientists and engineers.

Since 1976, employment of scientists and engineers is up 85 percent. This trend is expected to continue. However, the trend shows that the number of 22-year-olds——the near term source of future PHDs is declining. Further adding to the problem is the increased competition for these candidates from other fields——law, medicine, business, etc. While the number of U.S. PHDs in science and engineering declines, the award of PHDs to foreign nationals is increasing rapidly.

Our inability to motivate students to pursue science and engineering careers at the graduate level is compounded because of the intense demand industry has for bright Bachelor?s and Master?s degree holders. Too often, promising PHD candidates, confronting the cost and financial sacrifice of pursuing their education, find the attraction of industry irresistible.

11. The U.S. will come to lose its leading place in technology probably because ____B____. A. the number of PHD degree holders is declining B. the number of scientists and engineers is decreasing C. the number of 22-year-olds is declining D. scientists and engineers are not employed

D. they will spend much time and energy completing PHD.

15. PHD candidates “find the attraction of industry irresistible” means that ____B_____.

A. they find industry is attracting more and more college students

B. they don?t think they can prevent themselves from working for industry C. they cannot resist any attraction from all sides

D. they cannot work for industry any longer

Passage 2

The office has always been a place to get ahead. Unfortunately, it is also a place where a lot of natural resources start to fall behind. Take a look around next time you?re at work. See how many lights are left on when people leave. See how much paper is being wasted. How much electricity is being used to run computers that are left on. Look at how much water is being wasted in the rest-rooms. And how much solid waste is being thrown out in the rubbish cans. We bet it?s a lot.

Now, here are some simple ways you can produce less waste at work. When you are at the copier, only make the copies you need. Use both sides of the paper when writing something less important. Turn off your lights when you leave. Use a lower watt bulb in your lamp. Drink your coffee or tea out of your mugs instead of single-use cups. Set up a recycling box for cans and one for bottles. And when you?re in the bathroom brushing your teeth or washing your face, don?t let the tap run. Remember, if we use fewer resources today, we?ll save more for tomorrow.

Passage 1

Today, as in every other day of the year, more than 3000 U.S. adolescents(青年人)will smoke their first cigarette on their way to becoming regular smokers as adults. During their lifetime, it can be expected that of these 3000 about 23 will be murdered, 30 will die in traffic accidents, and nearly 750 will be killed by a smoking-related disease. The number of deaths attributed to cigarette smoking outweighs all other factors, whether voluntary or involuntary, as a cause of death.

Since the late 1970s, when daily smoking among high school seniors reached 30 percents, smoking rates among youth have declined. While the decline is impressive, several important issues must be raised. First, in the past several years, smoking rates among youth have declined very little. Second, in the late 1970s, smoking among male high school seniors exceeded that among female by nearly 10 percent. The statistic is reversing. Third, several recent studies have indicate high school dropouts have excessively high smoking rates, as much as 75 percent . Finally, though significant declines in adolescent smoking have occurred in the past decade, no definite reasons for the decline exist. Within this context, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) began its current effort to determine the most effective measures to reduce smoking levels among youth.

14. The reason for declining adolescent smoking is that ____D____. A. NCI has taken effective measures

B. smoking is prevented among high school seniors C. there are many smokers who have died of cancer D. none of these

15. What is implied but not stated by the author is that ____B____.

Passage 2

Children in the United States are exposed to many influences other than that of their families. Television is the most significant of these influences, because the habit of watching television usually begins before children start attending school.

Parents are concerned about the lack of quality in television programs for children. The degree of violence in many of these shows also worries them. Studies indicate that, when children are exposed to violence, they many become aggressive or insecure.

Parents are also concerned about the commercials that their children see on television. Many parents would like to see fewer commercials during programs for children. And some parents feel that these shows should not have any commercials at all because young minds are not mature enough to deal with the claims made by advertisers.

Educational television has no commercials and has programs for children that many parents approve of. The most famous of these is Sesame Street, which tries to give preschool children a head start in learning the alphabet and numbers. It also tries to teach children useful things about the world in which they live.

Even though most parents and educators give Sesame Street and shows like it high marks for quality, some critics argue that all television, whether educational or not, is harmful to children. These critics feel that the habit of watching hours of television every day turns children into bored and passive consumers of their world rather than encouraging them to become active explorers of it.

Passage 1

For any Englishman, there can never be any discussion as to who is the world?s greatest dramatist (剧作家). Only one name can possibly suggest itself to him: that of William Shakespeare. Every Englishman has some knowledge, however slight, of the work of our greatest writer. All of us use words, phrases and quotations from Shakespeare?s writings that have become part of the common property of the English-speaking people. Most of the time we are probably unaware of the source of the words we used, rather like the old lady who was taken to see a performance of Hamlet and complained that it was full of well-known proverbs and quotations. Shakespeare, more perhaps than any other writer, makes full use of the great resources of the English language. Most of us use about five thousand words in our normal use of English; Shakespeare in his works used about twenty-five thousand.

There is probably no better way for a foreigner to appreciate the richness and variety of the English language than by studying the various ways in which Shakespeare used it. Such a study is well worth the effort (it is not, of course, recommended to beginners) even though some aspects of English usage, and the meaning of many words, have changed since Shakespeare?s day.

All the words people use are taken from the writings of Shakespeare. 14. What does the word “proverb” mean? A

A. Familiar sayings. B. Shakespeare?s plays. C. Complaints. D. Actors and actresses.

15. Why is it worthwhile to study the various ways in which Shakespeare used English? B

A. English words have changed a lot since Shakespeare?s time.

B. By doing so one can be fully aware of the richness of the English language. C. English words are now being used in the same way as in Shakespeare?s time. D. Beginners may have difficulty learning some aspects of English usage.

Passage 2

As the pace of life continues to increase, we are fast losing the art of relaxation. Once you are in the habit of rushing through life, being on the go from morning till night, it is hard to slow down. But relaxation is essential for a healthy mind and body.

Stress is a natural part of everyday life and there is no way to avoid it. In fact, it is not the bad thing it is often supposed to be. A certain amount of stress is vital to provide motivation and give purpose to life. It is only when the stress gets out of control that it can lead to poor performance and ill health.

The amount of stress a person can withstand depends very much on the individual. Some people are not afraid of stress, and such characters are obviously prime material for managerial responsibilities. Others lose heart at the first signs of unusual difficulties. When exposed to stress, in whatever form, we react both chemically and physically. In fact we make choice between “fight” or “flight” and in more primitive days the choice made the difference between life or death. The crises we meet today are unlikely to be so extreme, but however little the stress, it involves the same response. It is when such a reaction lasts long, through continued exposure to stress, that health becomes endangered. Such serious conditions as high blood pressure and heart disease have established links with stress. Since we cannot remove stress from our lives (it would be unwise to do so even if we could), we need to find ways to deal with it.

16. People are finding less and less time for relaxing themselves because__D___. A. they do not know how to enjoy themselves

D. they are becoming busier with their work

18. Which of the following statements is true? D A. We can find some ways to avoid stress. B. Stress is always harmful to people.

C. It is easy to change the habit of keeping oneself busy with work. D. Different people can withstand different amounts of stress. 19. In Paragraph 3, “such a reaction” refers back to___B____. A. “making a choice between ?flight? or ?fight?”

B. “reaction to stress both chemically and physically” C. “responding to crises quickly”

D. “losing heart at the signs of difficulties”

You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.

Passage 1

In the United States, 30 percent of the adult population has a “weight problem”. To many people, the cause is obvious: they eat too much. But scientific evidence does little to support this idea. Going back to the America of the 1910s, we find that people were thinner than today, yet they ate more food. In those days people worked harder physically, walked more, used machines much less and didn?t watch television.

Several modern studies, moreover, have shown that fatter people do not eat more on the average than thinner people. In fact, some investigations, such as the 1979 study of 3,545 London office workers report that, on balance, fat people eat less than slimmer people.

Studies show that slim people are more active than fat people. A study by a research group at Stanford University School of Medicine found the following interesting facts:

The more the men ran, the more body fat they lost. The more they ran, the greater amount of food they ate.

Thus, those who ran the most ate the most, yet lost the greatest amount of body fat.

11. The physical problem that many adult Americans have is that_____C_____.

A. they are too slim B. they work too hard

C. they are too fat D. they lose too much body fat

A. 30 B. 50 C. 100 D. 150

A. Yes, there is plenty of evidence.

B. Of course, there is some evidence to show this is true. C. There is hardly any scientific evidence to support this. D. We don?t know because the information is not given.

14. In comparison with the adult American population today, the Americans of the 1910s ______A____.

A. ate more food and had more physical activities. B. ate less food but had more activities

C. ate less food and had less physical exercise D. had more weight problems

15. Modern scientific researches have reported to us that_____A_____.

A. fat people eat less food and are less active

B. fat people eat more food than slim people and are more active C. fat people eat more food than slim people but are less active D. thin people run less, but have greater increase in food intake

Passage 2

No one knows exactly how many disabled people there are in the world, but estimates suggest the figure is over 450 million. The number of disabled people in India alone is probably more than double the total population of Canada.

In the United Kingdom, about one in ten people have some disability. Disability is not just something that happens to other people: as we get older, many of us will become less mobile, hard of hearing or have failing eyesight.

Disablement can take many forms and occur at any time of life. Some people are born with disabilities. Many others become disabled as they get older. There are many progressive disabling diseases. The longer time goes on, the worse they become. Some people are disabled in accidents. Many others may have a period of disability in the form of a mental illness. All are affected by people?s attitude towards them. Disabled people face many physical barriers. Next time you go shopping or to work or visit friends, imagine how you would manage if you could not get up steps, or on to buses and trains. How would you cope if you could not see where you were going or could not hear the traffic? But there are other barriers: prejudice can be even harder to break down and ignorance inevitably represents by far the greatest barrier of all. It is almost impossible for the able-bodied to fully appreciate what the severely disabled go through, so it is important to draw attention to these barriers and show that it is the individual person and their ability, not their disability, which counts.

Passage 1

Why was Bastille important to the citizens of Paris? The building of the Bastille had been started in 1370 under Charles V. By the seventeenth century it had stopped to be important for defense. Cardinal Richelieu turned it into a prison. It was not an ordinary prison to punish common crimes. Its huge doors closed only on enemies of the King. The Bastille?s workings were secret. Prisoners were taken to it in closed vehicles. Soldiers on guard duty had to stand with their faces to the wall. No talking was allowed. Worst of all, a prisoner never knew if he would be there a day, a week, a year, or forever. Only the King?s letter could set him free.

Over the years the number of arrests by King?s letter had become fewer. By the time of its fall, most of the prisoners were writers who had written against the corruptions (贪污腐败) of the government. Voltaire, the famous French writer, spent a year there in 1717-1718, and another 12 days in 1726.

For those who believed in free speech and free thinking, the Bastille stood for everything evil. The day it was captured, only seven prisoners were found inside. Still, the Bastille was hated by the people. It was a symbol of the King?s complete power.
