Section B

Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.

(A)

In modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it highly, believing that it is responsible for social progress and prosperity. Others say that competition is bad; that it sets one person against another; that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.

I have taught many children who held the belief that their self-worth relied(依赖) on how well they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often life-and-death affairs. In their single-minded pursuit(追求) of success, the development of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten.

However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed, others take an opposite attitude. In a culture which values only the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary players, they strongly blame competition. Among the_most_vocal are youngsters who have suffered under competitive pressures from their parents or society. Teaching these young people, I often observe in them a desire to fail. They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they always have an excuse:“I may have lost, but it doesn't matter because I really didn't try.” What is not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost, that would mean a lot. Such a loss would be a measure of their worth. Clearly, this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistaken belief that one's self-respect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others. Both are afraid of not being valued. Only as this basic and often troublesome fear begins to dissolve(缓解) can we discover a new meaning in competition.

()65.What does this passage mainly talk about?

A.Competition helps to set up self-respect.

B.Opinions about competition are different among people.

C.Competition is harmful to personal quality development.

D.Failures are necessary experiences in competition.

()66.Why do some people favor competition according to the passage?

A.It pushes society forward. B.It builds up a sense of duty.

C.It improves personal abilities. D.It encourages inpidual efforts.

()67.The underlined phrase“the most vocal”in Paragraph 3 means ________.

A.those who try their best to win

B.those who value competition most highly

C.those who are against competition most strongly

D.those who rely on others most for success

()68.Which point of view may the author agree to?

A.Every effort should be paid back.

B.Competition should be encouraged.

C.Winning should be a life-and-death matter.

D.Fear of failure should be removed in competition.

(B)

Long long ago, there was a story. A young father punished his 3-year-old daughter, because she wasted a roll of gold wrapping paper. Money was tight and he became infuriated(大怒) when the child tried to decorate a box to put under the Christmas tree. Nevertheless, the little girl brought the gift to her father the next morning and said to him,“This is for you, Daddy.”

The man was embarrassed by his earlier overreaction(过激行为), but his anger flared(爆发)

again when he found out the box was empty. He yelled at her, stating,“Don't you know, when you give someone a gift, there is supposed to be something inside?”The little girl looked up at him with tears in her eyes and cried,“Oh, Daddy, it is not empty at all. I blew kisses int o the box. They are all for you, Daddy.”

The father was crushed. He put his arms around his little girl firmly, and begged for her forgiveness.

Only a short time later, an accident took the life of the child. It was also told that her father kept that gold box by his bed for many years. Whenever he was discouraged, he would take out an imaginary kiss and remember the love of the child who had put it there.

In a very real sense, each one of us, as a human being, has been given a gold container filled with unconditional(无条件的)love and kisses from our children, family members and friends. There is simply no other possession more precious than this.

In sport the sexes are separate. Women and men do not run or swim in the same races. Women are less strong than men. That at least is what people say. Women are called “the weaker sex”,or if men want to please them,“the fair sex”. But boys and girls are taught together at schools and universities. There are women who are famous Prime Ministers, scientists and writers. And women live longer than men. A European woman can expect to live until the age of 74, a man only until he is 68. Are women's bodies really weaker?

The fastest men can run a mile in under 4 minutes. The best women need 4.5 minutes. Women's times are always slower than men's, but some facts are a surprise. Some of the fastest women swimmers today are teenage girls. One of them swam 400 metres in 4 minutes 21.2 seconds when she was only 16. The first“Tarzan” in films was an Olympic swimmer, Johnny Weissmuller. His fastest 400 metres was 4 minutes 59.1 seconds, which is 37.9 seconds slower than a girl 50 years later! This does not mean that women are catching men up.

Conditions are very different now, and sport is much more serious. It is so serious that some women athletes are given hormone injections. Section D

Directions: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words.

“Uncle Sam”,of course, stands for the United States. It is the nickname(绰号) of the country. It is hard to believe that this nickname arose quite by accident and there was a man called“Uncle Sam”.However, not many people have ever heard of such a man. Not even most young Americans.

The man was called Uncle Sam Wilson. He was born in Arlington, Massachusetts, on September 13,1766. At the age of 14 Sam joined the American Revolutionary War, and served in the army under George Washington until the end of the war. He then moved to Troy, New York State, and began a meat-packing business. In the year of 1812, war broke out between the United States and the Great Britain. On October 2 that year, a group of visitors came to Sam's meat-packing plant. Among them was Governor Daniel Tompkings of New York State. He noticed the capitalized letters EAUS on the packages of meat and asked what they stood for. A workman replied that EA stood for Elbert Anderson, the businessman for whom Sam was working. And he added jokingly that US(actually it was the short form for the United States)stood for Uncle Sam Wilson.

In May 1813, this story appeared in a newspaper published in New York. Since Uncle Sam was an example of a hard-working man and a lover of America, the idea of “Uncle Sam”as the name for this kind of man became well-known rapidly.

By the end of the War of 1812,“Uncle Sam”had come to symbolize the character of the nation and the government. In 1961 the US Congress made a decision that“Uncle Sam”is the America's national symbol.

(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN 8 WORDS.) 81.What was Sam's first contribution to the United States?

82.The capitalized letters “US”came to stand for “Uncle Sam” through ________.

83.Why did the nickname “Uncle Sam”get accepted easily?

84.It took ________ years for the name“Uncle Sam”to be officially accepted as a symbol of the United States.
