Sweat rolled off my forehead as my younger brother and I sat under the tree.

“Hi, Jason, ” said my brother, Chad. “Do you hear the train? ” I listened,

but I heard only thunder in the distance. It was still miles away, but I heard it. It grew stronger and louder as it gained speed and got closer. How could that be? I wondered.

We were about to grab our bikes to see what it actually was when we stopped. What looked like a flock of birds darkened the sky overhead. When I looked at it closer, I realized it wasn’t birds. It was a tornado(龙卷风). The hairs on the back of my neck stood up as the air turned green and heavy. The sun disappeared. The wind strengthened and roared. I grabbed Chad’s arm and pulled him toward the house.

I tried to open the door, but it was as if an invisible force pushed against me. The door refused to open. When we finally managed to get inside, we found it was as dark as night. Our family had practiced a tornado safety plan many times. But I had never imagined that it would be just Chad and me at home the first time we needed to use it.

“Inside the closet! ” I yelled. I t was small and crowded, but we got in it anyway. Chad began to cry. “It’s going to be all right. ”I told him. But I was worried about Mom. I hope she’d found a safe place to wait out the storm.

The storm continued to rage. I heard a thud on the roof. The whole house creaked and groaned. Then it was quiet. I opened the door and we inched our way out of the closet. Rain had got in through the open window and wet the carpets. A kitchen window had shattered, its screen blown away. I looked at the backyard. The tree was uprooted, and broken branches lay on the ground.

“Jason, I can’t get service, ” Chad said as he held the phone in his hand. We had no electricity, either. I glanced at the wall clock. Had it been only 20 minutes since we’d first heard the thunder?

Then I heard footsteps toward the house. Mom had made it home safely. “Boys! ” she yelled. “Are you all right? ”

- 40 -

We ran out and hugged her. The sun came out, and this time it shone bright and clear.

(2020·黄山高二检测) I’ve often wondered if I might do more good as a travel agent rather than a s a psychologist. It seems that I have been more dramatically affected by certain kinds of travel experiences than I ever have.

My trip to Iceland is a fine example of that. The plan was to spend two days in a remote mountain hut(棚屋)in Iceland. I was working on a photographic book about winter in Iceland and needed to capture images of this amazing region of high mountain peaks, smoky volcanoes, and lakes with floating icebergs.

The moment after we arrived, the weather turned extreme, making visibility impossible. It snowed so much and the wind blew so hard that we couldn’t leave the tiny hut. To stay warm, we walked around in circles much of the day inside the tiny hut. We tried to call for help but the radio did not work. Day after day, we watched our supplies of food and fuel grow dangerously short. We got acute cabin fever(幽居病)and started going for walks and ski expeditions outside. Even when the weather finally broke, nobody came to get us even though it was three days beyond our scheduled pickup. By the time the rescue team came to pull us out, we had all given up hope.

From then on, the world looks different to me, as does my life. It would have taken me years of psychotherapy(心理治疗)to get to the same point.

Almost everyone has a story to tell, and interestingly, most of these experiences were not altogether pleasant at the time. In fact, it appears that the most constructive life-changing journeys were those that involved some sorts of awful and uncomfortable events that forced the person to develop new resources, increase confidence, and solve problems in new ways.

A. Awful journeys may become life-changing events that inspire people.

B. The travelers were so depressed that they needed psychotherapy.

C. The writer is a travel agent who loves difficult challenges.

- 40 -

故选A项。

27. What is the best title for the passage?

The first national survey of the psychological impact of the 19-nCoV(新型冠状病毒) collected data between Jan. 31 and Feb. 10. It found that 35 percent of people suffer psychological stress, and the level of the stress was to do with various factors.

To be clear, plastic bags are rightly thought of as a threat that’s harmf ul to human health. According to the National Resources Defense Council, over a decade ago, the average American family took home almost 1, 500 plastic shopping bags a year, filling our cabinets, kitchen drawers, and landfills Today the numbers are slightly better. According to National Geographic, as of 2018, shoppers in the United States use almost one plastic bag per resident per day.

This is not a story on the evil of plastics, but on whether the reusable bag can justify its existence. Although more environmentally friendly than traditional

single-use plastic bags, reusable bags, depending on what they are made of, are more energy-intensive (耗能) to recycle.

According to a report by the United Nations Environment Program, “dependin g on what they are made of, reusable bags might have to be deconstructed in a costly recycling process to separate the different materials. As a result, in many cases, reusable bags are not recycled. ” That means despite the best intentions, millions of reusable bags designed to replace the need for traditional plastic shopping bags, will also end up in landfills.

Another point to consider, not all reusable bags are equal in terms of their recyclability. There are a wide range of reusable bag options on the market, and reusable bags tend to be made of more than one material to give the bag added reinforcement (耐用) and added street fashion. On a life cycle basis, stronger, heavier bags—no matter what material they are made of—will have a more severe environmental effect. That’s because heavier bags use more resources to produce as well as distribute.

- 40 -

Just like plastic bags did, reusable bags multiply rapidly. Used for promotional (促销的)purposes and marketing of all kinds, reusable bags’ growing pop ularity means bags that have been used very little (or not at all) can be found piled in streets, in garbage cans in city parks, and basically everywhere. Therefore, consumers have come to see them as disposable, defeating their very purpose.

In the end, the best practice for reusable bags is to have no half measures: Either use them all the time or don’t use them at all. Using a reusable bag once or twice, and then throwing it away, doesn’t do the environment any favors.

32. What can we learn from the passage?

A. Plastic bags are refused by environmentalists.

B. Shops in America have limited the use of plastic bags.

C. The need of strong and fashionable reusable bags is more than the supply.

D. Reusable bags demand more resources to produce and recycle than expected.

根据文章第二段末尾句内容“Although more environmentally friendly than traditional single-use plastic bags, reusable bags, depending on what they are made of, are more energy-intensive to recycle. ”以及文章第三段内容“According to a report by the United Nations Environment Program, “depending on what they are made of, reusable bags might have to be deconstru cted in a costly recycling process to separate the different materials. As a result, in many cases, reusable bags are not recycled. ”可知, 可重复使用的袋子在生产方面成分复杂, 回收起来之后要要花费更高的代价分解。故选D项。

33. The words “very purpose” in Paragraph 5 refer to the intention of ______.

A. being left in landfills

B. being used as much as possible

C. replacing plastic bags

D. promoting goods on the market

根据前文内容“Just like plastic bags did, reusable bags multiply rapidly. Used for promotional purposes and marketing of all kinds, reusable bags’ growing popularity means bags that have been used very little (or not

- 40 -

at all) can be found piled in streets, in garbage cans in city parks, and basically everywhere.

34. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

A. How to Recycle Reusable Bags

B. Disadvantages of Plastic Bags

C. Reusable Bags? Think Twice!

D. Plastic Bags, Less Popular?

文章末尾段落再次点明主旨“I n the end, the best practice for reusable bags is to have no half measures: Either use them all the time or don’t use them at all. Using a reusable bag once or twice, and then throwing it away, doesn’t do the environment any favors. ”可知, 作者想要表达的是在使用

可重复使用的袋子时, 需要多加考虑, 想清楚。故选C项。

35. Which of the following shows the development of ideas in the passage?

I: Introduction CP: Central Point P: Point

Sp: Sub-point (次要点)C: Conclusion

【解析】选A。 第四段提出第二个次要点“Another point to consider, not all reusable bags are equal in terms of their recyclability”; 第五段是第二个要点: 由于人们到处乱扔可重复使用的袋子, 导致人们忘记了它们的最初目的: 可重复使用。第六段得出结论: “In the end, the best practice for reusable bags is to have no half measures: Either use them all the time or don’t use them at all. ”因此可知, 选项A合理概括文章结构。故选A项。

- 40 -

34. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

A. How to Recycle Reusable Bags

B. Disadvantages of Plastic Bags

C. Reusable Bags? Think Twice!

D. Plastic Bags, Less Popular?

A. Plastic Bags, Less Popular? Reusable Bags? Think Twice!

For a bird, to fly hundreds or thousands of miles each spring and fall is a difficult and dangerous journey, one that not all birds can survive. 36There is more than one single reason for different birds to migrate(迁徙), but it all comes down to survival.

For all birds, one of the main driving forces behind migration is food. If all birds were to stay in the same places year round, food there would become not enough. 37But as the food supplies decrease in the fall, they return to the southern areas.

38

Over millions of years, birds have developed different migration patterns, times and destinations. This helps birds take advantage of a wide variety of suitable conditions to raise their young, which increases the survival chances of the young birds.

Birds are migrating because of climate changes.

Changes in climate can affect migration. Many birds leave the Arctic for example, when temperatures begin to fall. They need warmer habitats. Similarly, the hottest regions can be an unpleasant environment for raising young birds.

Birds are migrating because of predators.

Habitats that have rich food sources also attract a greater number of predators who may kill birds. 40Many birds even migrate to specialized habitats that are nearly inaccessible to predators, such as coastal cliffs or rocky offshore islands.

A. So why do birds migrate?

B. Birds are migrating for their young.

C. So how do young birds migrate?

D. Birds are migrating because of diseases.

E. It is beneficial to lay eggs further north in cooler areas.

F. Birds that migrate to different habitats can avoid being eaten by predators.

G. As food sources are rich in the north each spring, millions of birds migrate from south to those areas.
