A famous professor did a study in a primary school. At the beginning of the school year, teachers were given the names of five children. The teachers were told that these students were the best students in the class while the fact was that these students were only average. But by the end of the year these five average students score the highest in the class.

What made these average students change so much to become top students? The only difference was the change in the teachers’ attitudes. Since the teachers believed that these five kids were the top students, they expected more from them. So these five average students began to expect more from themselves.

You know, if you expect the best from others, they’ll usually want to give you their best. A great leader said, “Treat a person just how he appears to be on the outside, and you’ll make him even worse. But treat a person like he’s already a success, and you’ll help make him the best he can be.”

It reminds me of another story of 7-year-old Johnny. His teacher got so tired of him. One day she said, “Johnny, you’re the naughtiest boy in this class!” The next year Johnny had a different teacher. The new teacher said, “Johnny, I’ve heard a lot about you. But I don’t believe a word of it.” Johnny’ new teacher treated him as if he was one of the smartest, best-behaved students. Well, you guessed it. After just a few months, Johnny became one of the top students in that class. Later on he became a great leader. .

Therefore, it’s the power of our love, belief, and encouraging attitude towards our children that matter. 24. How did the professor carry out his study?

A. He picked five average children on purpose. B. He picked the five smartest children.

C. He asked the teachers to care about the children. D. He helped to change the children’s attitudes. 25. The five average students became top students mainly because of ________. A. the professor’s help B. the teachers’ confidence in them

C. the change in their teachers’ attitudes towards them D. the change in their attitudes towards their teachers 26. Why does the author mention the story of Johnny? A. To show how to make a top student. B. To show the importance of encouragement. C. To show how successful Johnny was. D. To tell the difference between Johnny’s two teachers 27. Which can be the best title for the passage? A. The five top students B. The power of love C. The expectation of the best D. The development of right attitudes

What's the allure (魅力) of coffee shops? It’s been said that J.K. Rowling wrote the Harry Potter books sitting in one in Edinburgh.

Many people spend hours in these places enjoying a coffee as they work on their laptops(手提电脑). But if you’re spending all day buying one expensive coffee after another and haven’t sold your first novel yet, the cost can really add up.

For those who work outside of a traditional office or just want to take time out, there's a new place in London: a pay-per-minute cafe.

You can linger for as long as you like in the Ziferblat coffee shop. You just take a clock by the door to keep time. When you leave, you return it and pay the bill.

The cost of hanging out, eating, working and meeting people in the place is 3 pennies per minute. The shop’s owner, Ivan Meetin, says, “Everything is free except the time you spend here.”

2

Customers help themselves to coffee and cookies. They can also bring their own food while surfing(冲浪) the Internet through free wifi.

Meetin’s customers clearly are not the kinds who rush work with a paper cup to drink from at their desks. Some feel so much at home that they have to wash the dishes. The coffee shop’s atmosphere is relaxing and a bit informal.

These coffee shops, where you pay for the time and not for the cup, have proved popular in Russia. Only time will tell if the British will warm to the idea.

But I’d like to try it at least once. Who knows — I might even start writing my own novel. If coffee shops are good enough for J.K. Rowling to spend quality time in, why can’t I? 28. What does the underlined word “linger” in Para. 4 refer to? A. drink B. eat C. work D. stay 29. What can we infer about the Ziferblat coffee shop? A. It is very popular among the British. B. Its customers have to bring food by themselves. C. There are no waiters serving food to customers.

D. Customers spend less money there than in a traditional cafe. 30. The main purpose of the passage is to . A. introduce a new coffee shop B. show the popularity of coffee shops.

C. explain why the Ziferblat coffee shop was opened D. compare pay-per-minute cafes with traditional ones

31. What’s the author’s attitude towards the Ziferblat coffee shop? A. Supportive. B. Interested. C. Doubtful. D. Worried.

Located(坐落) on the hills of Lagiloa, this farming area has become a popular place for farmers from all parts of Fiji. The farming area was established(建立) by villagers of Vidawa. The establishment followed concerns by the elders in the village that their income came mostly from tourism and not so much from farming. The farming area is about 45 minutes’ walk from Vidawa. Although there is a road leading to the farming area, most farmers prefer not to drive up because of the poor road conditions.

The group leader Pilisiano Manabau said the elders decided to send a group of men from the village to start farming on the land on the hills of Lagiloa. “We came up, cut down the trees and started our farms here,” he said. “The elders in the village wanted us to get money from the farms too instead of mainly depending on tourism which is successful in our village.”

“Since we started, a lot of men from other parts of Fiji have come to join us and have been sending money back to their families. Only men live in this area. Women stay back at home to look after children.” Mr. Manabau said.

The area has about 13 houses built near the farms and the farmers depend on the fresh water from a source(来源) on the hilltop for drinking water. “If it rains, then we fill up our drums. During dry weather, we walk to the source to fill buckets(桶) for cooking and drinking.” Mr. Manabau said. “The farmers from other parts have to see the elders in our village to ask for a piece of land. In most cases, the elders allow them to come and farm because they know it is about supporting their families.” 32. Why did the villagers of Vidawa establish the farming area? A. To make full use of the land on the hills. B. To offer jobs to farmers from other parts. C. To increase their own income. D. To attract more tourists to their village.

3

33. Most farmers walk to the farming area because _______. A. they want to protect the environment B. the road to the farming area is bad C. cars are forbidden to go into the area D. they want to avoid the crowded tourists 34. We can learn from the passage that _________. A. farmers live a hard life on that farming area B. villagers earn more by farming than tourism

C. the farms help lots of men feed their families D. people of the village are against developing tourism 35. Which of the following best describes the elders in Vidawa? A. Careful. B. Confident. C. Strict. D. Kind-hearted.
