Britain's most popular lie has been disclosed, with one in four people admitting using “Sorry I had no signal" when returning a missed mobile phone call, a survey found.

Researchers found the average Briton tells on average four lies every day or almost 1500 every year. Almost one in six men admitted they were most likely to lie to their wife or girlfriend, on average at least twice a day. The most popular lie was saying you had no mobile phone signal, with one in four people admitting regularly using the little white lie. It usually came after they hit the “ignore" button when their mobile rang.

Three quarters of people think women are better liars. The research found 46 per cent of girls have been caught lying, compared to 58 of men.

The second most common fib(无关紧要的谎言) is “I haven't got any cash on me” when asked for money by tramps (流浪者), beggars and Big Issue sellers. “Nothing's wrong – I'm fine” came third followed by “You look lovely” and “Nice to see you”.

Modern technology turned out to have contributed to many lies with “I didn't get your text” in 18th, “Our server was down” in 20th and “My battery died” in 26th place.

Other lies to make the top ten included “I'll give you a ring”, “We're just good friends” and “We'll have to meet up soon”. “I'm on my way” and “No, your bum doesn't look big in that” completed the top ten.

Men tell the most fibs, coming out with five every day compared to women who lie just three times.

In many cases perhaps it is better to flatter with a fib than destroy someone with the truth, according to a spokesman for OnePoll, which carried out the research of 4,300 adults.

60. Whether the person being called has pushed the “ignore” button or ______, the caller at the

other end hears the same tone.

A. really has no signal

B. can’t get the text D. answers the call C. has a battery failure

61. Most people think women are better liars because ______.

A. there’re more women liars

C. women tell less harmful lies B. fewer women liars are found out D. women are harder to convince

62. “Our server was down” is perhaps a lie told as an excuse for not ______.

A. inviting a friend to dinner

C. coming to a party on time B. responding to an e-mail D. cleaning one’s room

63. “You look lovely” and “I’m on my way” rank _____ on the popular-lie list.

A. 3rd and 8th B. 5th and 10th C. 4th and 9th

C

Very attractive people tend to form partnerships that are less stable and satisfying than those According to research by Dr John Blaine of the University of Southem Califormia, relationships between people whose professions largely depend on their appearances, such as models or actors, tend to end much faster than those between lawyers, doctors or students.

Blaine said the beautiful felt different from childhood. They are treated as special, which may create both arrogance(傲慢)and insecurity. All too often, beauty can be used as an alternative to education. Often they are pushed out of their class or town, told to go off and make their fortune in Hollywood or London and, when the majority fail, they have few talents to make a living.

Blaine added that beautiful people score poorly on the “big five” — the key factors American experts consider when helping distressed couples. These are neuroticism(神经过敏), including anger and anxiety; extroversion(性格外向); openness to new experiences; agreeableness; and D. 5th and 12th

conscientiousness, or sticking by agreements they have made. Attractive people often see no reason to try to change until their looks start to fade.

Krista Sutherland, of the University of California Los Angeles, said partnerships that appeared to be perfect from the outside, such as the former “dream teams” of Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise or Hugh Grant and Elizabeth Hurley, where backgrounds and aspirations(抱负)are often shared, did not necessarily lead to happiness.

64. What does the underlined sentence “

A. Beautiful women always felt lonely.

B. Beautiful women always were alone.

C. Many beautiful women didn't end up with a happy life.

D. Beautiful women always lived a happy life.

65. The underlined phrase “

A. ordinary-looking women

C. common people B. women called Jane D. attractive women

66. We can infer in the passage that _________.

A. Hugh Grant and Elizabeth Hurley were a couple

B. Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise were very satisfied with their life

C. When they fail in Hollywood, the beautiful have little trouble in making a living

D. The marriages of the beautiful often last long

Reading to dogs is an unusual way to help children improve their literacy skills. With their shining brown eyes, wagging tails, and unconditional love, dogs can provide the nonjudgmental listeners needed for a beginning reader to gain confidence, according to Intermountain Therapy Animals (ITA) in Salt Lake City. The group says it is the first program in the country to use dogs to help develop literacy in children, with the introduction of Reading Edueation Assistance Dogs(READ).

The Salt Lake City Public Library is sold on the idea. “Literacy specialists admit that children who read below the level of their fellow pupils are often afraid of reading aloud in a group, often have lower self-respect, and regard reading as a headache,” said Lisa Myron, manager of the

children’s department.

Last November, the two groups started “Dog Day Afternoon” in the children's department of the main library. About 25 children attended each of the four Saturday-afternoon classes, reading for half an hour. Those who attended three of the four classes received a “pawgraphed” book at the last class.

The program was so successful that the library plans to repeat it in April, according to Dana Thumpowsky, public relations manager.

67. What is mainly discussed in the text?

A. Children’s reading difficulties.

C. Service in public library. B. Advantages of raising dogs. D. A special reading program.

68. Specialists use dogs to listen to children reading because they think ______________.

A. dogs are young children's best friends

B. children can play with dogs while reading

C. dogs can provide encouragement for shy children

D. children and dogs understand each other

69. By saying “The Salt Lake City Public Library is sold on the idea”, the writer means the library ____________.

A. uses dogs to attract children B. accepts the idea put forward by ITA

C. has opened a children's department D. has decided to train some dogs

70. A “pawgraphed” book is most probably_____________.

A. a book used in Saturday classes B. a book written by the children

D. a gift from parents C. a prize for the children

One evening I asked if he needed help. “Only if it doesn't affect school,” he said. I showed up at his office the next afternoon, and most afternoons after that for two months.

The terrible experience for our family taught me how to deal with difficulties. Now I know that through creative problem-solving, I can always find Plan B. I can ask for help and take risks. What I have learned from my dad’s understanding of business and his work ethic(信条)are two of the most important lessons I will ever learn. And they will be my principles for success.

About 35 percent of the students think there are more advantages. First of all, cloning can be used in the medical field. Scientists can clone healthy cells, which can help doctors cure patients. Also, cloning extinct animals has always excited scientists. Another advantage of it is increasing agricultural output, which is of great importance in our country.

However, about 65 percent of students hold the opposite view. For example, there is doubt about whether cloning is moral. Furthermore, diversity in genes is essential for animals to overcome diseases. A group of cloned animals would all have the same arrangement of genes. What’s worse, if the technology of cloning is taken advantage of by evil leaders, it will be very dangerous.

听力材料

M: Do we need to get together to plan our seminar(研讨会)?

W: Is there anything wrong with right now?

M: Have Tom's parents left for Los Angeles yet?

W: I think so. I called their house last night, but there was no answer.

W: I see the family next door has a new white dog. I wonder if he's friendly.

M: Yes, friendly. He came over here while I was cutting the grass and he wanted to play where I

was working.

M: What shall we do today?

W: I feel like going to a museum. It's too wet to go walking around the city.

M: I agree. Let's go.

W: How shall I do it, sir?

M. Very short all over, please.

W: Shall I put some oil on?

M: No, I don't think so, thanks.

M: Hi, Miss Li, do you need my help?

W: Can you help me with this desk? I want to carry it upstairs.

M: All right. But why upstairs?

W: A new student has just come. There aren't enough desks in the classroom. Could you also

help me carry a chair?

M: Sure. I'd be glad to. Where is my new classmate?

W: She is in my office.

W: Hey Carl, did you see the News Special on TV yesterday?

M: I sure did. Do you think that we'll really run out of oil in twenty years?

W: Not quite. But obviously oil companies are not finding new oil quickly enough.

M: Yeah. What did they say? Four new barrels found for every ten barrels sold?

W: That's right. That could cause prices to increase from 30 dollars to 100 dollars per barrel!

M: That would lead to a global crisis ! Especially, oil provides ninety percent of the world’s

transportation fuel.

W: Whoa! The world had better find a solution soon.

M: I agree. Hey, maybe we can invent a new fuel! Let's drive to the library and do some research. W: OK, but don't you think we should walk?

W: Allen. What are you talking about?

M: Oh, Sue. We were saying that you'd like to go to the United States, like your elder brother

Raymond. Have you heard from him? Is he enjoying being at an American University?

W: We got a letter from him two days ago. He says he finds something difficult, but mostly he

likes it.

M: You have other brothers and sisters, don't you, Sue?

W: Oh, yes. Three other brothers and three sisters.

M: Which one are you? I mean, how many are older or younger?

W: I'm the sixth oldest. How many brothers and sisters do you have?

M: None. I'm the only child.

W: Oh, that's too bad.

W: Can you help me?

M: Well, you could use e-mail to keep in touch with your family.

W: I know but to tell you the truth, I'd rather talk to them by phone. It's more personal that way. M: But seriously, there are lots of other things you can do with a computer besides word

processing and e-mail.

W: Yes, like what?

M: Well, first of all, there's the Internet, of course.

W: Yes, I know, you seem to be online all the time. What do you do, surf the net?

M: Sometimes. But mostly I use the Internet to get information about things I'm interested in and

talk with people all over the world about music. Do you know what a discussion group is? W: No. What is it?

M: Well, it's a kind of club, except that it meets online, and uh, anyone who's interested can join

the group. If you're a member, you can go online anytime you want and read messages sent in by other members, and of course you could also reply to any message you want. Um, here, look, there are twenty-five different discussion groups and live chats. You can communicate with people from all over the world in real time.

W: That sounds great! And if I had a computer, I could do research at home. I wouldn't have to do

all my work in the computer lab at school. Do you have time to go shopping?

W: Hello, everyone. I am glad to introduce my family members to you. We have a big family. The

first one I want to introduce is my grandmother. In fact few senior people live together with their children. Grandmother has heart disease. She lived in Washington before. It's impossible for my parents to leave New York. We asked her to live with us in New York so that we could look after her. During her spare time, she looks after our whole family in fact. She is humorous and happy. We all love her. My father is a policeman and he is always so busy. My mother is a nurse. They both work hard. They set good examples for us. My elder brother

Jack is a student of Harvard University. He often sends e-mails to encourage me to study hard. I am doing so. My younger sister Barbara is really a lovely girl. She has so many happy things to do every day. When I'm not happy, she can always find a way to make me laugh. OK, I am Frank Disney, a student of Grade Three in a senior high school. I am 18. I am glad to be your friend.
