第二部分 阅读理解(共20小题; 每小题2分, 满分40分)

When I was sixteen years old, I made my first visit to the United States. It wasn’t the first time that I had been abroad. Like most English students, I learned French at school. I had been to France many times. But when I went to America, I was really looking forward to having a nice easy holiday without any language problems.

But actually, I was wrong! I was looking for a public telephone to give my American friend Danny a call and tell her that I had arrived. A friendly old man asked me if he could help me.

“Yes,” I said, “I want to give my friend a ring.” “Well, that’s nice,” he said. “Are you getting married?”

“Who is talking about marriage?” I thought. “I only want to give my friend a ring to tell her I’ve arrived. Can you tell me where there’s a phone box?”

“Oh!” he said, “there’s a phone downstairs.”

When at last we met, Danny explained the misunderstanding to me.

“Don’t worry,” she said to me. “I had so many difficulties at first. There are lots of words which Americans use differently in meaning from the British. You’ll soon get used to all the funny things they say. But most of the time British and American people understand each other!” 36. Before visiting the United States, the writer thought .

A. he would have no problem with language B. he would not understand Americans C. he couldn’t express himself well D. he would have difficulty at the airport A. buy a ring for his friend C. ask the way A. the old man and the boy C. the British

If I asked you to name your favorite teachers from kindergarten through graduate school, it would be easy to answer, wouldn’t it? It would also be an enjoyable question to answer because it would bring back so many good memories of wonderful people who’ve touched both your personal life and your professional life. You would be thinking about people who not only taught you things of value, but inspired you as well. Quite possibly they inspired you to become a teacher.

My classmates and I were asked this question on my first day in the teaching credential (证书) program at the University of San Francisco many years ago. I thought of Sister Mary Anne, who taught me in elementary

37. The writer wanted to . 38. In the last paragraph, the word “they” refers to . school. I thought of Mrs. Padgett and Mrs. Kofford, English teachers, in high school. I thought of Dr. Lincoln and Dr. Campbell, history professors, who taught me in college. Then came this question, “What do they all have in common?” I stood up and said, “They all love what they are doing. They have great enthusiasm for teaching.” All of my classmates nodded their heads in agreement.

That was apparently the answer Dr. McSweeney expected. He said, “I ask that question every year, and I always get the same answer.” He went on to explain that he opened with that question because it got future teachers to think about what separates the great teachers from the not-so-great. He said, “We all remember our favorite teachers — the ones who had passion and enthusiasm, the ones who loved and enjoyed what they were doing. We want each of you to become that kind of teacher. Always remember those special teachers.” It’s a statement I never forgot once during my thirty-five years in the classroom. 39. According to the passage, an excellent teacher should have .

A. a sense of humor B. a wide range of knowledge C. passion and enthusiasm D. good health

A. have good memories B. are mostly women teachers C. teach very well D. have very positive influence on them

My father and I started our morning by moving quickly into the local store. I waited in line at the Starbucks counter while he shopped around to pick up a few things.

As I was standing there I became aware of an elderly woman, with untidy hair, wearing layers upon layers of old clothing, hunchbacked (弯背的) behind me in line. She had a few things for washing and seemed to want the Starbucks cashier to ring up since that queue was shorter than the queues in the store.

At some point I became aware of her edging (慢慢挪动) closer behind me — closer than I was comfortable with! I instinctively (本能地) placed a hand over my purse and drew it closer to me. My fear and imagination raced creating wild stories about this homeless woman who might try to steal from me.

Then it was my turn to order. As the cashier rang up my total, I discovered I was 67 cents short. I called my father but he was hard of hearing. He asked me to repeat what I said but he still couldn’t make me out. At that point, a long, grey arm, with holes in its sleeves, reached over from behind me. She laid 67 cents out on the counter, saying, “Here, we all need some help sometimes.”

I was stunned! Here was a woman who clearly had very little to give and was in great need herself. I had judged her wrongly and she had offered to reach out to help me!

English has now achieved global status (身份). Whenever we turn on the news to find out what’s happening in East Asia, or Africa, or South America, or anywhere, local people are being interviewed and telling us about it in English.

Indeed, if one looks at the facts about the amazing reach of the English language, many would be surprised. English is used in over 90 countries as an official or semi-official language. English is the working language of many international institutes as well as of most international research scientists. It is believed that over one billion people worldwide are learning English now.

One of the most remarkable aspects of the spread of English around the world has been the extent to which Europeans are adopting (采用) it as their language. English is spreading from northern Europe to the south and is now firmly established (建立) as a second language in countries such as Sweden, Norway, Netherlands and Denmark. If one visits any of them it would seem that almost everyone there can communicate with ease in English.

Recently, a special survey of Europeans’ use of languages has just been published. The report said that English is the most widely known foreign language now, with 43% of Europeans claiming they speak it and that Sweden now holds the most of English speakers, with over 89% of the population. What’s more, English is the language rated as the most useful language to know, with over 77% of Europeans who do not speak English as their first language considering it useful.

As is known to us, Washington University in St. Louis became the first college in the United States to ban (禁止) selling bottled water in 2009. Since then, more than a dozen small colleges and schools have done the same. The ban isn’t because the schools don’t want students to have easy access to water. Instead, the goal is to encourage students to bring reusable bottles to save money and, more importantly, to save the environment.

Many people believe that producing and using bottled water not only wastes money but also harms the environment. They say that bottled water is unnecessary because public water supplies in the U.S. are among the best in the world. These people believe that water fountains and reusable bottles with easy access to filling stations are a better choice.

But the makers of bottled water argue that plastic bottles make up a small portion of the nation’s total waste. They say it’s unfair to single out (单独挑出) their product when so many other items are packaged (包装) in plastic containers, and what’s more, water is a healthy choice compared to some sodas and juices that are also sold at school.

What do you think: Should sales of bottled water be banned from schools? We want to hear your opinion. Write a 200-word response. Send it to tfkasks4you@timeforkids.com. Your response may be published in a future issue of Time For Kids. Please include your grade level and contact information for your parent or teacher if you want your response to be published. The deadline (截止时间) for responding is August 31, 2012.
