Unit 6 A Woman Can Learn Anything a Man Can

I Objectives:

1. Students will be able to get the major information of the text by answering the Context Questions on page 164.

2. Students will be able to get the main idea of the text: A woman can learn anything a man can, but determination and hard work are required.

3. Students will be able to understand the structure of the text by doing the Text Organization on P. 165

4. Students will be able to master the different forms of concessive clause.

5. Student will be able to master the usage of some key words or phrases in the text

II Teaching Steps:

Step 1: Text Organization

Ask students to read the text before class and do Text Organization on P. 165. so that they may have a overall understanding of the text

Part one Paras. 1-5 The author describes how she stumbled into engineering. Part two Paras 6-9 The author writes about how she has overcome obstacles ,

including, including the bias against women, on her way to success.

Part three Paras 10-11 The author draws the conclusion that women can do

anything men can so long as they believe in their own abilities.

Step 2:Major Information of the Text

Ask students to answer the following questions about the content of the text, so that they may get the major information of the text.

1. What toys did the author and her two sisters like in their childhood? They liked girly toys such as a miniature kitchen, ponies and Barbies. 2. What was the national competition she once took part in as a college students? To convert a gas-guzzling SUV into a hybrid electric vehicle. 3. Why didn’t she dare to take her car to the mechanic when she was in high school? Because she didn’t know anything about cars and was afraid of being cheated by the mechanic. 4. What really prompted her to apply for the summer program designed to interest girls in engineering?

She was craving independence and wanted to live away form home for some time. 5. How did the summer program help her become an engineering major in college? It helped her earn six engineering credits, which of course made it easier for her to become an engineering major. 6. How long did it take her to get an engineering degree in college? Five years. 7. What does a difficult subject mean to the author?

In her view, if you find a subject is difficult to learn, it does not mean you are not good at it. It just mean you have to set your mind and work harder to get good at it. 8. Why did her algebra teacher let her retake her tests?

Because he had confidence in her abilities believing she could have done better if she had studied more. 9. Was she always confident in herself when she was in college? How do you know? No, she wasn’t always confident. She had moments of panic, worried that as a woman she would be unable to understand thermodynamics. 10. What does the author think of the claim that math and science come more easily to men?

She considers it wrong because it is based on a faulty premise. 11. What is her understanding if the human brain? It is flexible and more powerful than we imagine. 12. What does she mean by saying “have selective hearing”?

What she means is not to accept others’ opinions blindly but to use one’s own judgment. Step 3: Concessive Clause

Ask students to find all the concessive clause in the text, analyze them and translate them into Chinese. (usually introduced by “although”, “though”, “while”, concessive clauses can also assume other forms.)

a. Concessive Clause in the Text:

1. Concessive clauses with an emphatic “do”:

We did have a wiffle-ball set, but you would have been hard-pressed to find it in our

playroom.

2. Concessive clauses begun with “I’m not denying that”, “I don’t deny that”, “I admit that”… I’m not denying that most little girls love dolls and most little boys love videogames… But

how relevant is that to me, or to anyone, as an individual? 3. Concessive clauses including the modal verb “may”:

… it may be true that some people favor the right side of their brain, and others the left. But how relevant is that to me, or to anyone, as an individual?

b. Other Concessive Clauses:

1. Concessive clauses begun with “indeed”:

Indeed, television is superior to newspapers in vividness and quickness, but it pales beside newspapers in many other aspects.

2. Concessive clauses introduced by and inverted “as”structure: Much as I respect him, I can’t agree to his proposal.

3. Concessive clauses begun with “In spite of / despite the fact that”:

In spite of the fact that the revolution in industry has given variety of the way people live, it proves trivial when compared with the revolution in information.

Despite the fact that the economy tanked in 2008, physician salary managed to rise by 4%. 4. Concessive clause begun with “it is obvious/ true that”:

It is obvious that all will end in violence, but the violence is a long time coming. It was true that he didn’t have any other hobbies or interests, but that didn’t matter for Thierry.

Step 5 Key Words and Phrases in the text:

1. convert:: 【用法】convert… into…/ convert…from…to…

e.g. Do you know how to convert a PDF file into a Microsoft Office document?

It is important to understand that there is energy loss when energy is converted from one

form to another.

2. distinguish: 【用法】distinguish between… and…/ distinguish…from… e.g. I can’t distinguish between green tea and black tea.

e.g. Both younger and older interviewees thought they were at a disadvantage in looking for

work due to their age.

My field was social studies, so I am at a disadvantage when it comes to hard science and

physics issues.

The actor admitted that he was hopeless when it came to relationships.
