Part IV Reading Comprehension
Passage One Questions 61 to 65 are based on the following passage;
This giant insect can be used as a toy.
A child ties one end of a string to a stick and the other end around the "neck" of an insect. Holding the stick, the child lets the insect go. With a loud whirring sound, the insect takes off, pulling the string in a large curve over the child's head. The child laughs as the stick jumps around. The child is African, and the toy is the African Goliath beetle, the largest in-sect in the world.
The Goliath is a true insect because it has six legs and a body that is pided into three parts. Like all beetles, it has two pairs of wings. The front pair are thick and stiff and protect the back pair, which are soft. It is these soft back wings that make the beetle fly for-ward. They also cause the loud whirring sound the beetle makes when it flies. To steer, the beetle twists and turns its legs the same way you steer a bike by turning its front wheel..
African children often use the Goliath beetle as a toy. Although it is over 15 centimeters long, it is quite harmless.
61. The African Goliath beetle is
A) the world's largest insect B) a toy used in many parts of the world
C) the only insect found in Africa D) the world's smallest insect
62. What made the whirring sound that the child heard?
A) The curved string. B) The beetle's soft wings.
C) The beetle's six legs. D) The beetle's body.
63. We know the Goliath beetle is a true insect because it
A) makes a whirring sound when it flies B) has both soft and hard wings
C) has six legs and a body with three parts D) can fly
A) turning its soft back wings B) twisting and turning its hard front wings
C) twisting and turning its legs D) twisting and turning its whole body
65. What made the stick jump in the child's hand?
A) The stick jumped because the child laughed.
B) The beetle pulled on the string when it flew.
C) The child bounced the stick to make the beetle fly.
D) The child made the stick jump.
Passage Two Questions 66 to 70 are based on the following passage;
It remains to be seen whether the reserves (储备) of raw materials in the year 2000 will be sufficient to supply a world economy which will have grown by five per cent. South-East Asia alone will have an energy consumption five times greater than that of Western Europe in 1970. Incidentally, if the underdeveloped countries started using up petrol at the same rate as the
大学英语三级试题2
industrialized areas, then world reserves would already have been exhausted by 1990.
All this only goes to show just how important it is to set up a plan to conserve and pide up fairly natural resources on a worldwide scale.
This is a matter of life and death because world population i~ expanding at an incredible rate. By the middle of the next century population will expand every year by as much as it did in the first 1,500 years after Christ. In the southern, poor parts of the globe, the figures are enough to make your hair stand on end. Even supposing that steps are taken to stabilize (稳定) world population in the next fifty years, the number of inhabitants per square kilometer will increase by from 4 in the United States, to 140 in South-East Asia. What can we do about it?
In the first hypothesis (假设) we do nothing. By the year 2000, the southern parts of the world would then have a population control within fifteen years, so that population levels off (达到平衡). Even then the population in the southern areas would not stop growing for seventy-five years. And the population would level off at something like twice today's figure.
Finally, we could wait ten to twenty years before taking action. If we wait ten years the population of the southern areas would stabilize at 3,000 million. Even today the number of potential workers increases by 350,000 people per week. By the end of the century this figure will reach 750,000 . In other words, it will be unnecessary to find work for 40 million people per year---not to speak of food!
What this means in practical terms we can scarcely imagine. But, clearly if we do nothing, nature will ,solve the problem for us. But at what cost!
66. The best title for this passage would be_________.
A) Raw Materials in the Year 2000 B) Problems of Energy Consumption
C) Worldwide Conservation of Resources D) The Pressure of Population Growth
67. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the author?
A) A worldwide plan to conserve natural resources should be worked out.
B) The energy consumption of the underdeveloped countries will increase greatly.
C) The world economy will have greatly grown by the year 2000.
D) There will definitely be not enough raw materials in the year 2000.
68. It is clear that the author holds the view that _______.
A) we must take effective steps to control the overgrowth of the world population
B) we can do nothing to deal with the overgrowth of the world population
C) we can still wait ten to twenty years before we take actions
D) even if we take steps, we can not level off the world population A) Make you take action. B) Make you think deeply.
C) Make you shocked. D) Make you puzzled.
70. At the end of the passage the author implies that _______.
A) the population problem would be solved naturally
B) nature will punish us in the end if we do nothing
C) we can wait until nature solves the problem for us
D) we can hardly imagine what price we'll have to pay to solve the world population problem
大学英语三级试题2
Passage Three Questions 71 to 75 are based on the following passage;
Around the world two thirds of the people are farmers. Most of them engage in subsistence farming. This means that they raise plants and animals to provide their families with food and other supplies. They consume their varied output and have little to sell or to trade for other goods. Subsistence farms were common in the United States at one time, but there are few such farms today.
Two thirds of American farmers practice commercial farming. Commercial farms produce about 97 per cent of the country's agricultural goods. These farms are operated much like other industries. The members of the farm family produce the commodities (商品) that will be sent to the market. They sell their products and buy the things they need.
Some commercial farms are big factories in the field. They may be owned by a company or by an inpidual as an investment. Most American farms, however, are still operated by families. A farmer may own or rent his land.
In a country as large as the United States, farms vary widely in climate, land surface, soil, water supply, convenience to market, and other characteristics. Different regions may have different kinds of specialized farms. Specialized farmers concentrate on the kind of farming best suited to the land and climate, to their technical skills, and to the money they invest in the farm.
However, no region is limited to a single type of farm. Indeed few farms are limited to one crop or commodity. Where output is varied and no one kind of crop or commodity produces more than half of a farm's income, it is classified as a general farm. The general farmer grows varied crops to use the different kinds of soils or surfaces on his land and to employ his time and machinery most efficiently.
71. Subsistence farmers_______.
A) grow crops for their families' own consumption B) sell a lot of their products for money
C) trade their varied output for other goods D) use their agricultural products as commodities.
72. Subsistence farms_______.
A) are very popular in the United States now B) are still common in many parts of the world
C) consist of two thirds of the total number of the farms in the world today
D) used to be the major form of farming in the world
73. American commercial farms______.
A) provide the country with two thirds of the food its people need
B) are run in much the same way as other industries
C) are all owned by different companies D) never rent their land for farming
74. A specialized farm is characterized by _____.
A) its especially large size B) its independence of the market
C) its concentration on a single type of farming D) its special way of operation
75. A farm is classified a general farm if ________.
A) more than half of its income comes from varied crops
B) it is limited to a single type of farming C) it employs different kinds of machines
D) the soils or surfaces of its land are used most efficiently

are permanently cripple.
as a result of home falls. It is impossible to guess how many injuries result from falls, but they must run into millions.
Falls can be a problem for all ages. In the process of growing up, children or teenagers of-ten will fall. Fortunately their bodies are springy, so they may suffer only skinned knees, bumps and bruises. But in an older person, the same fall may cause a broken arm, leg, and hip or other injury that Preschool children are often killed by falls from open windows and porches. Their normal curiosity and the urge to climb lead them to dangerous heights. Therefore, it is a parent's duty to keep small children away from stairways, open windows and porch railing. Gates, bars, and other means of protection should be used whenever possible.
Adults fall because they don't look where they are going. Running or taking two steps at a time invites fall.

Our family is trying to decide where to go for our vacation this summer. Our son Tom wants to go to Yellowstone Park again to see the bears. We did that last summer, and what an experience it was! When we got there we put up our tent and went to explore. As we returned, we heard our daughter Susie cry out and then we saw a bear enter our camp. Tom wanted his father to chase him away. His father said, “No! It’s dangerous to chase a bear. And don’t let him chase you.” Susie said, “What shall we do ? Maybe we ought to climb a tree.” Tom said, “No, we’ve got to get him out of there. He might go to sleep in our tent.” “ Maybe we could make him leave if we put some honey outside for him to eat, “ Susie suggested. Then I said,”How are you going to get the honey? It’s in the tent.”
We watched the bear enter the tent and heard him upset everything inside. “It’s foolish for us to try to catch him,” said my husband. “ Leave him alone and wait for him to come out.” We waited, but the bear stayed inside.
