I was embarrassed to be seen with my father in public. He was severely crippled and very short, and when we would walk together, his hand on my arm for balance, people would stare. I would be ashamed of the unwanted attention.

It was difficult to walk together---and because of that,we didn’t say much as we went along. But as we started out, he always said, “You set the pace. I will try to adjust to you.” Our usual walk was to or from the subway, which was how he got to work. He went to work sick, and even in bad weather. He almost never missed a day, which he was proud of.

When snow or ice was on the ground, it was impossible for him to walk, even with help. At such times my sisters or I would pull him through the streets of Brooklyn, NY,on a child’s sleigh to the subway entrance. Once there,he would try to grasp the handrail(栏杆) until he reached the lower steps that the warmer tunnel air kept ice free. In Manhattan the subway station was the basement of his office building, and he would not have to go outside again until we met him in Brooklyn on his way home.

When I think of it now,I am surprised at how much courage it must have taken for a grown man to suffer from shame and disability. And at how he did it - without bitterness or complaint . He never talked about himself as an object of pity, nor did he show any envy of the more fortunate or able. What he looked for in others was a “good heart”,and if he found one,the owner was good enough for him.

Now he has been away for many years , but I think of him often. I wonder if he sensed my reluctance to be seen with him during our walks . If he did, I am sorry I never told him how sorry I was,how unworthy I was and how I regretted it. I think of him when I complain about troubles, when I am envious of another’s good fortune, when I don’t have a “good heart”.

“I was completely desperate and tried to think which of my things I could manage without.” Says Mary. As tears ran down her face, a voice behind her said, “That’s okay, I’ll pay for her.”

Rather surprised,Mary turned around to see a tall man whom she had never seen before. He had a gentle and kind voice that was firm and decisive.

Mary paid the money back to Obama the day she joined her husband. At that time he had just finished his job as a poorly paid community worker in Chicago, and had started his law studies at Harvard University.

In the spring of 2006 Mary’s parents heard Obama was considering a run for president. They wrote a letter saying that they would support him. At the same time, they thanked Obama for helping their daughter 18 years earlier.

Blogging has become something of a big thing in the last few years. Just like the Internet was 10 years ago, blogging is popular with an underground culture that is doing it for love and passion.

Blogging is a way of collecting links to webpages and sharing thoughts and ideas with people online. Blogs are basically online journals or diaries which are created for sharing information and ideas.

Dominic, a fifth-grade student, writes: “The blogs give us a chance to communicate between ourselves and inspire us to write more. When we publish on our blog, people across the entire world can respond by using the ‘comments’ link. In this way, they can ask questions or simply tell us what they like. We can then know if people like what we write and this indicates to us where we can improve. By reading these comments, we can discover our weaknesses and our strengths. Blogging is an opportunity to exchange our points of view with the rest of the world rather than just people in our immediate environment.”

Blogging is sweeping the Internet. A recent report noted that at least three million Americans have created blogs, with similar numbers being seen worldwide.

Two years ago, Andrew Sullivan decided to set up a Web page himself and used “Blogger. com” to publish some daily musings (冥想) to a readership (读者人数) of a few hundred. He worked hard at the blog for months for no financial reward. But the result is that he is now reaching almost a quarter of a million readers a month and making a profit.

Think about it for a minute: Why not build an online presence with your daily musings and then tell your first book through print-on-demand (POD) technology direct from your Web site? Why should writers go to newspapers and magazines to get an essay published when they can simply write it themselves, change it into a PDF file, and charge a few bucks per download?

This, at least, is the idea: a publishing revolution more profound than anything since the printing press. “Blogger. com” could be to words what Napster was to music. 48. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage? A. Blogs are mainly online chatting with others. B. Blogging is important in the past few years. C. Dominic wants to get a chance to be a writer.

D. Blogging makes us exchange our view only with friends

49. According to the passage, about _______ people worldwide have created blogs except Americans. A. 250,000 B. 750,000 C. 3 million D. 6 million

50. From the passage we can see that “Napster” in the last paragraph is probably related to ___________. A. newspapers B. readers C. words D. music 51. What would be the best title of this passage?

A. What is Blogging B. Blog is Your Favorite

C. Blogging Goes Mainstream D. A Publishing Revolution

To get an extra 14 years of life, don’t smoke, eat lots of fruits and vegetables, exercise regularly and drink alcohol in a proper amount. That is according to a study published this Monday in the Public Library of Science Medicine Journal.

After tracking more than 20,000 people aged 45-79 years in the United Kingdom from about 1993-2007, Kay-Tee, Khaw of the University of Cambridge and his colleagues found that people who adopted these four healthy habits lived an average of 14 years longer than those who didn’t.

“We’ve known for a long time that these behaviors are good things to do, but we’ve not seen this benefit before, ” said Susan Jebb, head of Nutrition and Health at Britain’s Medical Research Council. “The benefit was also seen regardless of whether or not people were fat and what social class they came from.”

Study participants scored a point each for not smoking, regular physical activity, eating five servings of fruits and vegetables a day and moderate alcohol intake.

Public health experts said they hoped the study would inspire governments to introduce policies helping people to adopt these changes. But because the study only observed people rather than testing specific changes, it would be impossible to conclude that people who suddenly adopted these healthy behaviours would surely gain 14 years.

“We can’t say that any person could gain 14 years by doing these things,” said Doctor Tim Armstrong, a physical activity expert at the World Health Organization. ”The 14 years is an average across the population of what’s theoretically possible.”

“Most people know that things like a good diet matter and that smoking is not good for them”, Susan Jebb said, ”We need to work on providing people with much more practical support to help them change.” 52. Which of the following doesn’t belong to the four healthy habits? A. Eating five servings of fruits and vegetables a day. B. Doing proper exercise in the morning every day. C. Having a cigarette before going to bed every day. D. Drinking alcohol in the proper amount every day. 53. We can learn from the passage that_____.

A. the study observed people as well as tested specific changes B. Susan Jebb did not take part in the study

C. there is no need for people under 45 adopt these good habits

D. only those from first class can benefit from these healthy behaviours 54. What can be inferred from the passage?

A. Governments should take measures to help people change their bad habits. B. People aged 45-79 have bad habits in the United Kingdom. C. All the people are well aware of the harm of their bad habits.

D. People have adopted the four healthy habits after knowing they’re good. 55. What would be the best title for this passage? A. Smoking and Drinking Cuts You 14 Years

B. Healthy Habits Could Gain You Extra 14 years C. A New Way of Keeping Healthy

D. Smoking and Drinking Harms Your Health 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分满分10分)

To stay away from the disease, you’d better stay at home as much as possible and not go to places where there are many people. Wash your hands more often to keep them clean. Open the window to have more fresh air in the room. And eat more fruit and vegetables to keep yourself fit and strong.

So far the disease is not so deadly as it seems to be. Do be at ease! Take care and you’ll be OK.
