Recently I paid a visit to Harvard University, where there are top class scientists and professors and the best academic system in the world.

I was pretty shocked when I first stepped onto the campus. Well, it's not even really a campus. It's more like a district in a small town.

九校联考高三英语第 - 5 - 页 共 14 页

Harvard's main buildings are from the 18th century. They look very old and simple. You might even say they're a little shabby. They don't fit the modern idea of university at all. The buildings are surrounded by grass and trees, so I felt as if I had walked into a medieval castle. But when I looked across the street, busy shops and in-fashion students made me feel like I was in the 21st century again. It creates a strong contrast and brings a special atmosphere to the school.

Our tour guide Gary took us around and told us: \center of the school? Here is where they host their graduation ceremony. They just set up tents and benches and have a very simple ceremony. Unbelievable! Who would think the most talented students just graduate on the lawn?

I saw some students put a blanket on the grass and lie down to read a book. When I listened to the soft sound of pages turning, along with chirping of the birds, I felt very calm. There was no competitive feeling at all.

Harvard has the world's first computer in its science center and there are hundreds of high-end computers too. Its religion and the literature departments are also among the best. It is the perfect mix of tradition and new technology. It makes Harvard a very attractive place to study in.

I hope one day I'll attend my dream school—Harvard. 56.The article is mainly about . A.the author's campus life in Harvard B.the author's impression of Harvard C.Harvard's old buildings D.the academic system at Harvard 57.The author was most impressed by , according to the article. A.Harvard's mix of tradition and new technology B.the classes held on beautiful lawns at Harvard C.Harvard students not taking their graduation ceremony seriously D.the feeling of not living in modern society on the campus 58.What can we conclude from the article? A.Harvard campus is actually a district of a big city. B.There are no competitions at Harvard University.

C.Graduation ceremonies are not complex at Harvard. D.All Harvard buildings date back to the 18th century.

59.According to the article, in which fields is Harvard top in the world? A.Literature, arts, and law. B.Religion, law and arts. C.Literature, arts and computer science. D.Religion, computer science and literature.

Thanksgiving Day is the most truly American of the national Holidays in the United States and is most closely connected with the earliest history of the country.

In 1620, the settlers, or Pilgrims(清教徒),they sailed to America on the May

flower, seeking a place where they could have freedom of worship. After a hard two-month voyage they landed at in icy November, what is now Plymouth, Massachusetts.

During their first winter, over half of the settlers died of starvation or diseases. Those who survived began sowing in the first spring.

All summer long they waited for the harvests with great anxiety, knowing that their lives and the future existence of the colony depended on the coming harvest. Finally the fields produced a yield rich beyond expectations. And therefore it was decided that a day of thanksgiving to the Lord (God) should be fixed. Years later, President of the United States announced the fourth Thursday of November as Thanksgiving Day every year. The celebration of Thanksgiving Day has been observed on that date until today.

The pattern of the Thanksgiving celebration has never changed through the years. The big family dinner is planned months ahead. On the dinner table, people will find apples, oranges, chestnuts, walnuts and grapes. There will be plum pudding, mince pie, other varieties of food and cranberry juice and squash. The best and most attractive among them are roast turkey and pumpkin pie. They have been the most traditional and favorite food on Thanksgiving Day throughout the years.

Everyone agrees the dinner must be built around roast turkey stuffed with a bread dressing to absorb the tasty juices as it roasts. But as cooking varies with families and with the regions where one lives, it is not easy to get an agreement on the accurate kind of stuffing (填料)for the royal bird.

Thanksgiving today is, in every sense, a national annual holiday on which Americans of all faiths and backgrounds join in to express their thanks for the year' s bounty and sincerely ask for continued blessings.

Wugging, or web use giving, describes the act of giving to charity(慈善)at no cost to the user. By using Everyclick.com, which is being added to a number of university computers across the UK this week , students can raise money every time they search, but it won’t cost them a penny.

Research shows that students are enthusiastic about supporting charity, 88% of full time students have used the Internet to give to charity. This figure is high, considering this age group is often the least likely to have their own income. 19% of 22 to 24 years old have short-term debts of more than £ 5,000. With rising personal debt levels in this age group, due to university tuition fees or personal loans and a lack of long-term savings, traditional methods of donating to charity are often not appealing or possible.

Beth Truman, a 21-year-old recent university graduate has used Everyclick. com to donate to her chosen charity(慈善团体), the RSPCA, for two years and has seen the “wugging” movement grow popular with students. “When you’re at university you become more socially aware, but it’s sometimes hard to give to others when you have little money yourself.” says Beth. “Wugging is great for people in this age group as it allows them to use the technology on a daily basis to give it to charity, without costing them a single penny.”

Wugging is perfect for people who want to be more socially aware and supportive but don’t feel they have the means to do so. Students using the web can generate money for causes they care about without costing them anything in terms of time or money, and charities get a valuable source of funding.

Everyclick. com works like any other search engine, allowing users to search for information, news and images but users can identify which of the UK’s 170,000 charities they would like to support through their clicks. Everyclick.com then makes monthly payments to every registered charity. Launched in June 2005 Everyclick.com is now the eighth largest search engine and one of the busiest charity websites in the UK.

68.According to the passage, “wugging” is actually a _______. A.website for charity B.school organization

九校联考高三英语第 - 9 - 页 共 14 页

C.charity-related action D.popular part-time job

69.How does Beth Truman think of the“wugging”? A.It makes giving to charity easy. B.It is easier to search for information. C.It stresses the importance of charity in people’s daily lives. D.It is a common way to promote the students’social awareness.

70.The underlined work “means”(in Para 4) probably refers to . A.time B.money C.method D.interest 71.What is the best title for this passage? A.“Wugging”, A New Technology for the Internet B.British People Show Strong Interest in Charities C.More Britain Charities Benefit from the Internet D.Students Raise Money for Charity by “Wugging”

Americans are reputed to be friendly people. Their friendships, however, tend to be shorter and more casual(随意的) than friendships among people from other cultures. It is not uncommon for Americans to have only one close friend during their lifetime, and consider other “friends” to be just social acquaintances(泛泛之交). This attitude probably has something to do with American mobility and the fact that Americans dislike to be dependent on other people. They incline to “compartmentalize”(划分)friendships, having “friends at work”, “friends on the softball team.” “family friends ” and so forth. Because the United States is a highly active society, full of movement and change, people always seem to be on the go. In this highly charged atmosphere, Americans can sometimes seem abrupt(鲁莽的)or impatient. They want to get to know you as quickly as possible and then move on to something else. Sometimes, early on(在开始阶段), they will ask you questions that you may feel are very personal. No insult is intended; the questions usually grow out of their genuine interest or curiosity, and their impatience to get to the heart of the matter. And the same goes for you. If you don’t understand certain American behavior or you want to know more about them, do not hesitate to ask them questions about themselves. Americans are usually eager to explain all about their country or anything “American” in which you may be interested. They talk so much that you may become tired of listening. It doesn’t matter because Americans tend to be uncomfortable with silence during a conversation. They would rather talk about the weather or the latest sports scores, for instance, than deal with silence. On the other hand, don’t expect Americans to be knowledgeable about international geography or world affairs, unless those subject directly involve the United States. Because the United States is geographically distant from many other

九校联考高三英语第 - 10 - 页 共 14 页

nations, some Americans tend not to be aware of what goes on in other parts of the world.

72.According to the passage, Americans’ attitude towards friendship is . A.unusual to have only one intimate friend B.more informal than that in other countries

C.to regard all friends as only social acquaintances D.to divide friends into several grades 73.What can we learn from the passage?

A.Americans know a lot about international affairs.

B.Friendships among Americans tend to be more formal. C.Americans always seem to be on the move. D.Americans like to cooperate with other people. 74.It can be inferred from the passage that . A.Americans want to take part in all kinds of activities B.curiosity is the major characteristic of Americans C.Americans do not know how to deal with silence

D. Americans’ characters are influenced by their social and geographical

environments.

75.Why do Americans tend to ignore the rest of the world?

A.Because they are not interested in other countries.

B.Because their country doesn’t have many neighboring nations. C.Because they are too proud of themselves.

D.Because they are too busy to learn about other countries.
