China is the largest developing country in the world and its

population accounts for about 22 percent of the world’s total. For a long period of its history, China has been plagued by poverty for various reasons. In the mid-1980s, the economy of an overwhelming majority of the rural areas in China grew dramatically by virtue of their own advantages, but a small number of areas still lagged behind because of the constraints of their economic, social, historical, and natural conditions. The Chinese government, while working on all-round economic and social development, has nationwide implemented a large-scale program for development-oriented poverty relief in a planned and organized way. With the main objective of helping poverty-stricken people solve the food and clothing problems, this program has gone a long way toward alleviating poverty.

“世界总人 口”如果直译的话是the world’s total population或者the total population of the world,但是由于该分句的主语中已经出现了一次population,故此处可将total活用作名词,意为“总数”。

而可以意译为for a long period of its history。 !

“由于”可以用because of, due to, out of来表达,也可以用一个简洁的单词for。“诸多”的表达方式也有很多,如many, various, a lot of, lots of等。 此处可译为…has been lagued by poverty。

“扶贫开发”实际上是一个项目,因而可灵活译为a program for development-oriented poverty relief。

Mandarin, the official language of China, is suddenly hot in American schools. With the rapid development of China’s economy in the 21th century, both public and private schools in America are scrambling to add Mandarin to their curricula of foreign languages or expanding Chinese language programs already in place. By some estimates, as many as 50 000 children nationwide are taking Mandarin in American schools. To develop Chinese-language programs has met some difficulties. A shortage of professionally trained teachers with certificates has made it difficult for some schools to join the competition. When schools need to employ teachers, they often recruit them from China directly, which is a hidden trouble for culture clash.

在战国时期(the Warring States Period)出现了最早的指南针——司南[sinan(a

south.pointingladle)]。

In the Song Dynasty, Shen Kuo described in his book Dream Pool Essays the floating compass, which enabled the compass to be applied in navigation for the first time. The invention of the compass promoted the development of maritime undertakings, and it was soon introduced to Europe via Arab.

The Chinese shadow play, a unique art form combining the Chinese folk arts and crafts with opera, is an indispensable delicate pearl in Chinese traditional arts.

Singles,Day —Nov.11 began to gain its popularity in the 1990s. Unattached young people would treat each other to dinner or give gifts to the person he/she loves to end their single status. That gift-giving helped to turn Singles' Day into a shopping festival as sellers of everything from jewelry to TVs,even to cars saw a marketing opportunity and launched Singles' Day sales. It is similar to Monday in the United States—the day after Thanksgiving weekend, when online Christmas shopping begins and merchants have their busiest sales day.

Although ancient Chinese mythology does not have relatively complete plot and mythological figures don't have systematic genealogy, they have distinct features of oriental culture, among which the spirit of esteeming virtue is particularly significant. When compared with Western mythology, especially Greek mythology, this spirit of esteeming virtue is even more prominent. In Western mythology, especially Greek mythology, the criteria for judging whether a god is good or not are mostly the god's wisdom and strength, while in ancient Chinese mythology, the criterion lies in morality. This way of thinking is deeply rooted in Chinese culture. For thousands of years, this spirit of esteeming virtue has affected people's comments on historical figures and expectations of real people.

The nine-year schooling in primary and junior secondary schools belongs to compulsory education. General senior secondary education lasts for three years. 1.

时问”用take?to?

5.第五句中,“9年教育”译为The nine-year schooling;“属于”可以用固定搭配belong to来表达;“义务教育”译为compulsory education。

The only reason I’ve managed to accomplish anything is because I am a firm believer in continuous improvement.

翻译这个句子的时候,用了句式the only reason is...because,大家看到汉语“如果说......”

I am a firm believer

If you fail in something, distance from the event for a day or two, because agonizing over the problem will not make it go away (and will make it a lot worse). 遇到挫折:fail in something

暂时:for a day or two(for a day or two有时并不仅仅指一两天,还可以表示暂时哦)

纠结:agonizing over the problem

Read a good book, catch up with some friends you haven’t seen in a long time, or go on a nature hike. You will be able to look at the issue with a fresh perspective. 柳暗花明:a fresh perspective(将汉语里的成语翻译成英文,很多时候都找不到固定的英语翻译,我们就可以根据意思,用自己熟悉的单词或词组来表示它的意思,只要保证意思不变就可以哦)

户外骑游:go on a nature hike

After you have done that, ask yourself: “Why did this work out and how can Ido better next time?” 奏效:work out

This process very well could repeat itself several times depending on the nature of your goal, but if you keep making a firm commitment to continuously improve yourself, you will develop so much that the only option left is success. Consistent hustle always wins.

In reviewing our work of the past year, we clearly see that many problems and difficulties remain in our economic and social development.

We must always put the interests of the people first.

We must truly protect the people‘s economic, political and cultural rights and interests, pay particular attention to solving acute problems affecting their vital interests, and ensure that poor urban and rural residents have the basic necessities of life.

维护人民群众的经济、政治和文化权益 protect the people‘s economic, political and cultural rights and interests

着力解决......pay particular attention to solving (记住,pay attention to doing/sth 这个固定结构)

The fundamental goal of our socialist modernization drive is to continually meet the growing material and cultural needs of the people.

Only if we exercise power for the good of the people can we enjoy the broadest and most reliable support from the people and draw from them the strength for accomplishing all our undertakings.

执政为民 exercise power for the good of the people 我们的各项事业 all our undertakings

Where have those absent senior students gone? Some lucky dogs have gone to their new jobs while the majority are still striving to get a job or engaging in their internship outside of the campus. The severe employment pressure has pushed senior students into employment market earlier. The anxiety of getting a job before graduation disturbs the restless mind of every student, which leads to skipping school of most students.

In my view, with senior students leaving campus earlier, their time of education has been reduced, which puts them in a disadvantaged position in the employment market. Students should start job hunting after finishing the courses of the last academic year. At the same time, the universities should provide career education for senior students.

Nowadays a growing number of people, especially the 20s or 30s, tend to stay indoors for most of their spare time, especially on holidays. Some spend the majority of the time online chatting, blogging, shopping, dating or playing computer games. Some sit with their eyes glued to the television screen, day and night.

People’s opinions vary when it comes to this way of killing time. A great number of people maintain that staying indoors is cheap, comfortable, and most importantly, very safe. Others,

however, frown upon staying indoors for too long. They are worried that lack of physical exercise and face-to-face communication with others will do harm to people’s body and mind.

Personally, I don’t think staying indoors for most of the day should be advocated. Instead, people in all ages, their physical conditions permitting, should be encouraged to spend more time outdoors. The brilliant sunshine, the pleasant green space, the interactions with other people, etc. are all good for people’s health, both physically and psychologically.

Working from Home

Certain companies, especially some small-scale businesses, start to encourage their siaff to work from home or use home as £t working base for at least part of the week nowadays. Some offer some form of remote working support to their workforces, such as equipping them with laptops and installing broadband, and others pay for the telephone bills for these workers. This worJc pattern is popular because it’s clear that there are a number of benefits for these companies. First, it helps retain employees, especially highly- qualified working parents with childcare responsibilities. Second, it brings higher productivity because the employees have fewer interruptions and less commutiBg time. Last but not feas^ it offers savings on premises and other facilities.

However, there are some potential drawbacks. For one thing, there is difficulty of managing home workers and monitoring their performancej and difficulty of maintaining staff development and upgrading skills. For another, it may create a sense of isolation among home workers and it can be harder to maintain team spirit. Therefore, enterprises should weigh the pros and cons before permitting their employees to work at home.

On Taking CET Repeatedly

On Taking CET Repeatedly

In recent years, many college students are laying grearstress on CET exams. In order to get high marks in the exam3 many sbdents are'taking CET lime and time again although they have passed it. When “CET season” approaches, campuses are filled with students occupied with CET preparations.

However, some people disapprove the idea of taking CET repeatedly for high scores. Although CET application fee is not high, taking the exams constantly can be a considerable financial burden. Moreover, it’s a waste of time to prepare for it every year, when you can do something more meaniigftil during the golden time in college. In addition, rather than focusing on CET, students should strive to develop other kinds of abilities.

As far as Tm concerned, it’s understandable to taking CET repeatedly for higher marks to be more competitive in the job market. If our future job requires a good mastery of English, we can step further to take high-level exams such as TOEFL or IELTS. But if it doesn't, we should not waste our lime and energy to take CET repeatedly.

Sinology

In recent years, Sinology, the study of Chinese traditional culture, literature, history, society etc*, has become increasingly popular* For instance, it is reported that many primary and secondary schools have set up courses of sinology, in which students are taught classical works by Chinese ancient educators and philosophers, like Confucius- Another good illustration is in the program CCTV Lecture Room famous scholars, e.g, Yu Dan, give lectures on Chinese ancient philosophies and literatures*

Sinology becomes prevalent due to the fact that it is of vital significance for both the individuals and the society. For one thing, Sinology is the essence of Chinese civilization with more than 5,000 years. Thus, for individuals, they can enlarge their scope of knowledge, enrich their experience and adapt themselves to the complicated society. For another, it is acknowledged that the rehabilitation of Sinology can contribute to the establishment of a harmonious society. In my opinion, all Chinese people should inherit the merits of Sinology. To do so, we can read books by ourselves or to attend lectures on this issue. Besides, we have the obUgation to popularize introducing it to the world* By doing so, we can not only inherit it but also make it glorious and prosperous.

Reform of English Education

Reform of English Education

As college English education is greatly emphasized with the rapid development of global commuiiicaticm, tbe defects that exist in the current educational system are open to more criticism- It is widely acknowledged that a thorough reform of college English education should be under way.

People ask for English education reform mainly because of the Inadequacy of college English education under the current system. On the one hand, many coilege English teachers

underestimate the role interest plays in English learning and keep preaching in class. On the other h^nd, under the current system, most Chinese students tend to separate vocabulary memorizing, grammar, Hsteniiig, speaking, reading, and writing ftom each other and therefore their English is also “broken” in this way. This has also greatly contributed to the “dumb English” of many Chinese students.

In my view, to reform English education, colleges and universities should encourage students to speak English in class and hold more activities to promote students' oral English. Teachers should focus on attracting students with vivid teaching and arouse students* enthusiasm in learning English. With the collaboration, the reform of college BngHsh education will surely yield pleatifu] fitiits.

Should College Students Be Allowed to Get Married?

There isno denying the fact that it is a hotly debated topic today whethercollege students should be allowed to get married. Some time ago, theban was lifted by some universities on students getting married. Tothis people’s attitudes differ sharply. Some hold the positive view. They say that most college students are adults and that it is a basicright for those who have reached the appropriate ages to get married.Besides, they argue that with their biological and emotional needs met, these students will study better. The ban on this means a severeviolation of human rights.

Many others, however, hold the negative opposite view. Theyclaim that the university or college is a place to study instead of acommunity to lead family life. Allowing college students to get marriedwould adversely affect their study. For instance, they would spend toomuch time attending their family and love, unable to concentrate ontheir school work.

As far as I am concerned, Weighing the arguments of both sides, I believe that it is OK to allow college students to get married. Anyway, this is their freedom. Actually, we don’t have to

worry too muchbecause facts have shown that most college students would choose not toget married in the face of such fierce competition and heavy schoolwork.

(或 As far as I am concerned, Weighing the arguments of both sides,I believe that college students should not be allowed to get married.Though mostly adults, they are actually immature psychologically. Theirwishes to get married are, more often than not, impulses. Besides, asstudents, they are not ready to support a family financially.

Excess Spending on Campus

A recent survey indicates that the monthly expenditure of a college student has been on the sharp rise. Many college students have no concept of thrift in their mind at all.

The following factors contribute to this excess spending. First of all, as the only child of their families, many students are the apples in their families' eyes and naturally get more care and pocket money. Some are even spoiled and take spending money from their parents for granted. In addition, with the improvement of living standards, parents can also afford higher expenditure of their children. Moreover, some students like to pursue fashion and trends, which can be quite costly. Finally, campus love is another possible factor causing too much spending.

From my point of view, college students should learn to be thrifty. We should limit our expenditure on daily necessities but not buy whatever we want regardless of their prices. The habit of thrift can help us form fight values and is favorable to our future development.

Displaying Wealth Online

Nowadays, it is not rare to see people displaying their wealth on the Internet. Some post pictures of luxury goods, such as brand clothes and bags, luxurious automobiles or jewelries. Some write about their experiences in which a lot of money is spent.

People have different responses to this phenomenon. Some say that it is people’s right to share their possessions or experiences with others on the Internet, as long as the things are legal and the experiences real. However, some criticize that the rich people are too arrogant. What’s worse, there are also a few who are not actually rich but put fake photos only to satisfy their vanity.

In my opinion, sharing is a good thing, and it is exactly the spirit of the Internet. But people should make careful choice on what they are sharing. After all, showing off is not very nice, not to mention faking.

Limiting the Buying of Cars or Not? 1.

Limiting the Buying of Cars or Not?

Beijing has placed strict restriction on the number of newly purchased car in the city and the policy bas sparked heated discussion. Some people support the policy, saying it,s a powerful method to cope with the severe traffic congestion in the capital. With cars increasing drastically in the past few years, severe traffic jams occur not only in rush hours but at any time of the day now. Others, however, are strongly against the limitations. They argue that the great number of official cars, which are frequently used, is a big factor causing traffic congestion. But the policy mainly aims at private cars and has no dear restrictions on the use of official cars. Besides, car purchase limitation would hinder the development of China's automobile industry, and more people would lose their jobs as a result.

Personally, I think the restriction of buying and use of cars, official cars included, is inevitable and just a matter of time for Beijing. If the number of cars is not limited, there will be a huge disaster for the environment, road resources, the travel demands of normal people and the improvement of living standards. Equality of Education Opportunity

In recent years the problems which are caused by the inequality of education opportunity have attracted the public's attention. For instance, the backward teaching facilities and dilapidated school buildings in rural areas are in sharp contrast to those advanced facilities and well-equipped classrooms in urban areas, students from poor families can,t go to universities because of the high tuition.

There are several factors which contribute lo these problems. First, the distribution of resources is unbalanced between rural and urban schools. Second, educational loans for poor students are far from enough. Third, the inequality in some schools, admission policies also turns many students away. The education inequality can have many bad impacts. On the one hand, it can affect people’s future employment. On the other hand,it is the root of many social problems.

To change this situation, I think, we should take the following measures. Firstly, the government spending on education should be increased and the allocation of public resources gives priority to rural and weak urban schools. Secondly, the implementation of the government financial aid system for students should be accelerated. Thirdly, the government should speed up education reforms to ensure everyone has equal access to schools. We Should Balance Our Love

We Should Balance Our Love

Nowadays it is common to see that many parents focus their attention on their children, but leave their own parents without proper care. The most typical example is the phenomenon of empty nest seniors. This problem has aroused the public concern and has become the hot topic of many discussions.

Paying little attention to older parents can have serious consequences. First, the elderly often feel lonely and depressed if there is no child with whom they can talk, and this can have a bad effect on their mental heath. Second, the aged parents with no children by their sides can have a lot of trouble in their daily life due to disease or old age.

In my opinion, we should take the following measures. Children should be encouraged to live with or near their old parents, which is very helpful for them to know their parents, conditions and attend their daily life. And it is also necessary for them to create chances to communicate with their aged parents. Besides, our government should strive to establish the service system for the elderly and expand its social insurance coverage among them. 1. Should Food Be Banned on the Subway?

Should Food Be Banned on the Subway?

Currently, some cities are considering a food ban on subways, which has sparked heated discussion. Some people say food should be banned because of the trash and rats they attract. And, garbage from discarded food can cause track fires. Beyond sanitary and mechanical concerns, food can also fuel fist fights, as was discovered last week by one passenger who criticized a woman eating steamed stuffed bun on the subway.
