PART FOUR Too Many Cars?
Everyone agrees that there are simply too many cars on the read but who will be the first to stop using theirs? Although everyone hates being stuck in traffic, no-one sees their cars as part of the growing problem. However, with traffic growth of up to 84 per cent expected by 2031 and the
ever-increasing cost of accidents and delays already at $160bn in Europe, there is a growing need to change our 'car culture' and develop alternative forms of transport as quickly as possible. One answer is to make cars more expansive by increasing taxes on patrol. However, tax increases will affect the people who live in the country more than city drivers and do little to reduce inner city traffic. The Government is also looking at pay-as-you-drive schemes on motorways but this will push cars on to smaller 'free' roads, which will make the problem worse.
A successful transport policy is not just a question of making the car tee expensive but of offering car drivers a real alternative. Many motorists dislike driving to work but say public transport services are too slew, offer poor quality and are far too expansive. If new transport policies are to succeed, public transport needs to be quick, reliable and affordable. Transport planners are also developing ways of managing the existing road network more efficiently. New technology such as smart cards and electronic monitoring of roads will lead to a more efficient use of transport systems. However, technology will not reduce the number of cars on the road or solve the real problem of how to persuade car drivers to leave their beloved cars at home more often. 16、 Pay-as-you-drive schemes will reduce the amount of traffic on motorways. Recipe for Success
Not many companies can boast of having been in business for more than three and a half centuries. Yuzaburo Mogi, president and CEO of Kikkoman Corp. — the world's leading manufacturer of soy sauce — is well aware however that the company can't rest on its laurels if it's to successfully meet the challenge posed by its thousands of competitors globally. But Mogi — the first Japanese person to ever earn an MBA from the Columbia Business School in 1961
— loves a challenge.
He learned American management methods through his studies at Colombia, as well as practical marketing know-bow thanks to his experience as a product demonstrator, serving soy sauce in supermarkets and at international trade fairs during his summer breaks from his studies at Columbia, which has been a source of inspiration for him through the years. In 1957, the company established Kikkoman International, Inc. in San Francisco in order to launch full-scale sales and marketing activities in the US. Test kitchens were built and home economists were recruited to come up with recipes for American-style dishes using soy sauce. The recipes were introduced in newspaper articles, on tiny recipe books attached to the necks of soy sauce bottles, and in cookbooks.
Kikkoman's strategy of building a global company that acts locally has contributed greatly to its growth. Kikkoman hires local people to operate its plants outside Japan, and develops marketing campaigns that appeal to consumers in overseas markets. The goal is to have consumers identify
Kikkoman's products as the leading locally made products in its field. \have seen our soy sauce becoming more and more a part of the American lifestyle,\Mogi says. As he notes, Kikkoman has captured 56% of the US market, double that of its nearest competitor, and the company has the top share of the world market.
Kikkoman is also a leader when it comes to quality. Its soy sauce is naturally brewed, unlike many of its rival products, which are chemically produced. Kikkoman's commitment to high quality has made it an unparalleled brand in recent decades, as consumers in the US and other countries have become more health-conscious and aware of the importance of truly natural food. \seasoning, a dependable ingredient, in kitchens around the globe,\Mogl says. 23、 What has Mogi understood?
A. A company should be more competitive.
B. Successes in the past do not secure success in the future. C. Studying MBA can help a person be successful. 24、 Mogi got his practical marketing skills
A. through his MBA courses at Columbia Business school. B. as a salesperson at trade fairs.
C. from his part-time jobs on vacations.
25、 What is the main purpose of setting up a company in San Francisco? A. to obtain market share in the USA
B. to create recipes fit for the American people C. to sell soy sauce all around the USA 26、 The company developed rapidly because
A. it was able to adapt to local marketplace. B. its marketing strategy was global. C. its products satisfied customers.
27、 What does Mogi say about his product in the USA? A. The product has conquered America. B. It was unique and popular.
C. It has been influencing the American way of living. 28、 What can we conclude about Kikkoman?
A. The company has made more profit in the USA than in Japan. B. Its leader is far-sighted and enterprising. C. It has planned to move to the USA.

This working life by Maureen Dowd
In the world of business, it is not always easy for women to do the same things as mot. Consider the working dinner.
In order to do your job well, it's important to, sometimes see clients and business contacts away 29 the office, in a more relaxed atmosphere, you can get to know your business partner 30 . In the end, after alt, people do business with people they like.
Women start out 31 a disadvantage because, unless you're Nancy Lopez or Martina Navratilova, it's 32 to invite men out for a game of golf or tennis. Men usually prefer 33 play sports with other men.
You might think that restaurants are the perfect playing field. But they can be dangerous ground. 34 people from the office see two men they know having dinner together, they think it's business. If colleagues see a woman dining with a man, they often 35 if it's another kind of business. I'm still locking 36 the perfect solution. Breakfasts are out because I find it impossible to be pleasant at 7 a. m. over a bowl of muesli. I love lurching, but that's usually a bad time for busy people, 37 if they are on the road. So that brings us back to dinner.
One answer is to take another colleague or client to dinner 38 no one can think it is a tete-a-tete. Of course, this isn't always convenient. So when I can't do this, I take guys out to dinner one-on-one-to places where I'm most 39 to see colleagues. The more your colleagues see you doing working dinners with different man, the 40 they know it is part of your business style.

84、 A.
When one decides to withdraw a product from the market, lots of issues must be taken into consideration. The first thing needs to be considered is how difficult is it? If the product has spread into a large area geographically, it will take too much effort to withdraw.
However, if the product is seriously defected, no matter how difficult it is, the product should be withdrawn for the sake of company image and consumer confidence.
Once the product is withdrawn, the company should find ways to fill the market gap. Or else the market share will be taken by its competitors. Therefore, after the product has been withdrawn, the company should try their best to fill the market with new undetected or similar products. B. It is very important to communicate enough when dealing with contractors, because it is the only way to avoid misunderstandings and also the so-called “communication gap”. A tiny mistake on a detail will cause the entire failure of the work. So before anything has been done, make sure that everything you want to inform the contractors has been informed.
Some clients tend to have a suspicious attitude towards their
contractors. This will not help in their cooperation and instead this will cause resent in the other party, thus the progress of the work will be hampered. So the best way is to trust your partner which is chosen by yourself.
