this a good thing? Sometimes, when Mr. Ballmer and his 16-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, listen to rock music together and talk about interests both enjoy, such as pop culture, he remembers his more distant relationship with his parents when he was a teenager.

“I would never have said to Mom, ‘Hey, the new Weezer album is really great. Music was not the only gulf. From clothing and hairstyles to activities and How do you like it?’” says Ballmer. “There was just a complete gap in taste.” expectations, earlier generations of parents and children often appeared to move in separate orbits.

Today, the generation gap has not disappeared, but it is getting narrow in many families. Conversations on subjects such as sex and drugs would not have taken place a generation ago. Now they are comfortable and common. And parent-child activities, from shopping to sports, involve a feeling of trust and friendship that can continue into adulthood.

No wonder greeting cards today carry the message, “To my mother, my best But family experts warn the new equality can also result in less respect for “There’s still a lot of strictness and authority on the part of parents out friend.” parents.

there, but there is a change happening,” says Kerrie, a psychologyprofessor at Lebanon Valley College. “In the middle of that change, there is a lot of confusion among parents.”

Family researchers offer a variety of reasons for these changing roles and attitudes. They see the 1960s as a turning point. Great cultural changes led to more open communication and a more democratic process that encourages everyone to have a say.

“My parents were on the ‘before’ side of the change, but today’s parents, the 40-year-olds, were on the ‘after’ side,” explains Mr. Ballmer. “It’s not something easily accomplished by parents these days, because life is more difficult to understand or deal with, but sharing interests does make it more fun to be a parent now.”

Dear Alcohol,

You’ve been around forever. I can remember all the pain you’ve caused for me. Do you remember the night you almost took my father’s life? I do. He loves you. Sometimes I think he loves you more than he loves me. He’s been addicted to you, to the way you promise to rid him of his problems, only to cause more of them. You just sat back and laughed as his car went spinning through the street, crashing into two other cars. He wasn’t the only one hurt by you that night.

Do you remember the night of my first high school party? You were there. My friends were intrigued by you. They treated you as if they were never going to see you again, drinking all of you that they could. I spent two hours that night helping my friends who had fallen completely. “I’m so embarrassed,” they said as I held their hair back so that they could vomit (呕吐). “I'm sorry,” they said when I called taxies for them, walking them out and paying the driver in advance. “This won’t happen again,” they said as they were sent to the hospital to have their stomachs pumped. Two 15-year-old girls slept in hospital beds that night thanks to you.

Do you remember the night when you took advantage of my 17-year-old neighbor who had to drive to pick up his sister from her dance lessons? Do you know how we all felt when he hit another car and killed the two people in the other car? He died the next morning too. His sister walked home from her dance lesson, only to find the parked police cars and a crowd of people gathering on the sidewalk just two blocks away from the dance studio. She didn’t realize her brother was in the midst of it all. She never saw him again. And it’s all your fault.

I wish you’d walk out of my life forever. I don’t want anything to do with you. Look at all the pain you’ve caused. Sure, you’ve made people happy too from time to time. But the damage you’ve caused in the lives of millions is inexcusable. Stop luring (引诱) in the people I love. Stop hurting me, please. Sincerely, Anonymous

Letter to the Editor

A heated debate is currently going on in our town. Should we allow the Odeon Triplex Cinema to be constructed at the Havenswood Shopping Center? There is just one large lot left to build on, and the theater would use up all of that space. Some people are excited at the idea of finally having our own movie theater. Others would rather travel ten miles north to the nearest theater to keep our quiet town the way it is. They say it is enough to have Marvin’s Movie Video Rentals in the shopping centre, with lots of recent videos available.

There are certainly benefits to renting videos. For one thing, you can view movies when it is convenient for you. You can relax on your sofa, and take a break whenever you need one. You can also talk to others without bothering any strangers seated nearby. In addition, it is a less expensive way to view a movie, especially if more than one person is watching the video.

On the other hand, seeing a movie in a theater is a different experience. For one thing, you can see the movie on a wide screen as the filmmaker intended. To be viewed on a television screen, a film must be changed in some way to make it smaller. One way is the “pan-and-scan” method, which involves removing some of the details in the picture. This results in an image that is not complete. The other way, called “letterboxing”, keeps the image the way it is on the big screen, with one annoying exception: because the big-screen version is wide, the same picture on a television screen must be long and narrow, with black strips above and below it.

Another problem is sound. The sound from a television cannot compare to the sound system in a movie theater. Your experience of a movie improves when you can clearly hear all of the sound. Furthermore, at home, viewing companions often talk during a movie, which makes you miss out on what’s happening in the film.

Besides, having a movie theater will not mean that you can’t still go to Marvin’s and rent a movie! You will just have a choice that you didn’t have before. Isn’t it time for people in Havenswood to enjoy a little progress? 27. Who may be the author?

A. The owner of Marvin’s Movie Video Rentals.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Cultural shock isn’t a clinic term or medical condition. It’s simply a common way to describe the confusing and nervous feelings a person may have after leaving a familiar culture to live in a new and different culture. 31 That can be exciting, but it can also be overwhelming.

Everyone feels the pressure to fit in at one time or another---whether they’ve lived in the area for days or years. 32 All of your experiences before you came to your new home are part of you, and what makes you special. 33

Educate people about your culture. Just because you’re the one entering the new culture doesn’t mean you should be the one doing all the learning. Take the opportunity to teach classmates and new friends about your culture; they may know little about it. Invite them over for traditional dishes from your culture. 34 Find a support group. Find kids in your class or neighborhood who recently move, too. You can share experiences.

Keep in touch with home. You probably leave behind good friends and family when you move. If it’s going to be a long time until your next visit, keep in touch. You’ve not only left behind people, but also other things--- like your favorite spot to hang out. 35

浙江省台州中学2018届高三考前最后一次高考模拟英语试题

C. By presenting different people’s views.

Remember, the key to getting over your culture shock is understanding the new culture and finding a way to live comfortably within it while keeping true to the parts of your culture you value.

It’s important to be yourself. Try not to force yourself to change too fast or to change too many things all at once. You will have your own pace of adjusting. A. Keep pictures around to remind you of home.

B. Here are a few tips to make sure your new culture doesn’t overpower the old. C. But the good news is that culture shock is temporary.

D. But don’t feel like you need to change everything about yourself so you can stand out less.

E. As long as you find a good combination between old and new, you’ll be fine. F. When you move to a new place, you’re bound to face a lot of changes. G. It will also help them to learn more about you in the process. 第三部分 语言运用(共两节,满分45分)

A little boy selling magazines for school walked up to a house that people rarely visited. The house was very old and shabby and the owner hardly ever came out. When he did come out, he would not say hello to his neighbors or passers-by but simply just glared at them.

The boy knocked on the door and waited, sweating from fear of the old man. The boy’s parents told him to stay away from the house, and a lot of the other neighborhood children were told the same thing from their parents.

As he was ready to walk away, the door slowly opened. “What do you want?” the old man said impatiently. The little boy was very afraid but he had a quota (份额) to meet for school with selling the magazines. So he got up the courage and said, “Uh, sir, I am selling these magazines and uh, I was wondering if you would like to buy one from me.”

The old man just stared at the boy without a word. The boy could see inside the old man’s house and saw that he had dog figurines (小雕像) on the fireplace mantle. “Do you collect dogs?” The little boy asked. “Yes, I have many collections in my house. They are my family here and they are all I have.” The boy then felt sorry for the man, as it seemed that he was a very lonely soul.

“Well, I do have a magazine here for collectors. It is perfect for you. I also have one about dogs since you like dogs so much.” The old man was ready to close the door on the boy and said, “No, boy. I don’t need any magazines of any kind, now goodbye.”

The little boy was sad that he was not going to make his quota with the sale. He was also sad for the old man being so alone in the house that he owned. The boy went home and then had an idea. He had a little dog figurine that he got some years ago from an aunt. The figurine did not mean nearly as much to him since he had a real live dog and a large family. 注意:
