Like a growing number of young women in Vietnam‘s northern part city of Haiphong, Pham Thi Hue was infected with HIV by her husband, one of the town‘s many drug users. But instead of being shamed into silence, as Vietnamese with HIV and AIDS are, the 25-year-old tailor and mother of one went public, appearing on television and at conferences. Her business suffered and her neighbors insulted (辱骂)her, but Hue has now become the public face of Mothers and Wives, an HIV/ AIDS support group established in Haiphong by a Norwegian nongovernmental organization and her neighborhood‘s People‘s Committee. Last year, she founded a smaller group named after a local flower. People who need advice on treatment or help preparing bodies for burial can dial a hot line and get assistance from able and empathetic(同情的)HIV victims. ―We gather to support each other,‖ Hue says. ―When we are sick, what we need most is encouragement and comfort from people who understand our situation and are willing to share our happiness, as well as our sadness.‖

On a hot and damp night last month, Hue welcomed into her small home a very thin woman, also a tailor, who was HIV positive. The woman tearfully told Hue that she had not told anyone about her condition, fearing that she would lose customers and that her daughter would be insulted at school. Hue became the wise elder, offering medical and personal advice.

Beauty crosses all cultural and sexual barriers.

People all over the world generally agree on what makes a human face beautiful,British and Japanese researchers reported in March.

Beautiful women have high cheek-bones and large eyes.Attractive men have strong chins.―Beautiful‖ faces tend to be the ones with the most average proportions.

The new study, using computer—generated images based on photographs of real persons, found people said a face was more pleasing if certain features of an ―average‖ face were improved.

The more attractive face had higher cheek-bones,a thinner jaw and larger eyes relative to the size and shape of an average face. The attractive shape also had shorter distances between the mouth and chin and between nose and mouth.

―What we did was look at faces already judged attractive,‖David Perrett of the University of St Andrews said by telephone.‖Then we exaggerated(夸张) the attractive features.‖

They took the attractive parts, such as large eyes or a strong chin, and made them slightly larger.Sure enough, people taking part in the experiment chose the ―exaggerated‖ faces.

But Perrett said this only worked to a degree. ―There‘s a danger of a bug-eyed monster somewhere along the line.‖he said. ―The eyes could become totally important at some point…‖.

Perrett said it was not clear why people found certain features attractive. Perhaps attractive facial features signal sexual maturity and fertility, emotional expressiveness or charm.

The effect worked across cultures.‘‘Japanese and Caucasian observers showed the same preferences for the same facial composites, suggesting that beauty judgments of face shape are similar across different cultural backgrounds.‖

Perrett said earlier studies showed that black people also agreed on universal judgments tend to be the same from men, women and children. 63.The best title of the passage is .

Ladji Doucoure of France beat Olympic champion Liu Xiang of China in the final meters to claim the title of the men's 110 meters hurdles (跨栏) at the 10th world championships (锦标赛) in Helsinki on Friday.

Doucoure, who led the world this season with 12.97 seconds, overtook the Chinese to win the race in 13.07 seconds. Liu was second in 13.08. Four-time world champion (冠军) Allen Johnson of the United States took the third in 13.10.

The 22-year-old Doucoure said after the race, ―I can not tell you just how long I have been dreaming of this. This victory (胜利) is the result of a lot of hard work, and also a lot of support from people who had believed in me. I had a bad start, touched a few hurdles, but after the 4th hurdle I picked up my race and went straight to the finish line.‖

Liu, who won the Olympic gold with a world record-tying time of 12.91 seconds, said: ―I'm very satisfied with the second place. The result could have been worse. I felt quite well and did my best. I'm not tired, I had some clearance problems at the start, so I should practice that some more.

Finally, I didn't lose by much, only by a little bit, but I did think I could win it.‖

Liu's coach Sun Haiping said on Friday he was content with Liu's performance.

―Liu Xiang was quite good during his reaction (反应) period, but he was a little bit slow in the middle and he finally caught up during the last two hurdles,‖ Sun told Xinhua.

Although satisfied with the silver medal and the clocking of 13.08 seconds, Sun said Liu might have added the world title to the Olympic championship if Liu had run the track neighboring his major rivals (对手) of Doucoure Ladji or Allen Johnson.

―If he had run next to Ladji Doucoure or Allen Johnson, Liu could have kept pace with them and then sprinted (疾跑) at the last stage. In this case, he

Monarch butterflies(黑脉金斑蝶) are a common summer sight in the northern United States and Canada. These larges orange and black insects brighten parks and gardens as they fly lightly among the flowers. What makes monarchs particularly interesting is that they migrate(迁飞) ---all the way to California or Mexico and back. They are thought to be the only insect that does this.

Every year in the late summer monarchs begin their journey to the south. Those heading for Mexico go first for the Louisiana-Mississippi area, then fly across the Gulf of Mexico into Texas. Once in Mexico, they settle themselves in one of about fifteen places in a mountain forest filled with fir trees. Each place provides a winter home for millions of monarchs. The butterflies are so many that they often cover entire trees. When spring comes, they begin their long journey north.

The question is often asked whether every butterfly makes the round-trip journey every year. And the answer is no. the average monarch lives about nine months. So one flying north might lay eggs in Louisiana and then die. The eggs of

that generation may be found in Kentucky;the eggs of next generation may end up in Wisconsin or Michigan. The last generation of the season, about the fourth, will make their way back to Mexico and restart the journey.

Scientists learn about monarchs‘ migration by catching and making marks on the insects. By reaching a monarch with such a mark and noticing where it came from, the next scientist can get to know things like the butterfly‘s age and its routing(路线).

72. One of the places where monarchs spend the winter is _________. A . the Gulf of Mexico B an area in Mississippi C a forest in Mexico D a plain in Texas 73.Which of the following is not true?

A Every years in the early summer monarchs begin their journey to the south. B Not every butterflies makes the round –trip journey every year. C Monarch butterflies are the only insect that migrates.

D Monarch butterflies begin their long journey north in spring 74.The routing of monarchs‘ migration can be learned ________. A by examining the marks made on them B by collecting their eggs in the mountains C by comparing their different ages

D by counting the dead ones in the forest

B Scientists‘ interest in monarchs. C Winter home of monarchs D Life and death of monarchs
