The United States is a country of immigrants. After the Native Americans, all people have an immigrant past except African slaves and their descendants（后代）. The first immigrants were Europeans, and the arrived in Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607. They arrived from England on a ship named the Mayflower to escape religious persecution（迫害）.

The first European immigrants formed thirteen colonies（殖民地）under England. The thirteen colonies were not happy with the mother country, England. The colonies were paying taxes but did not have power. Some Americans think that the United States needs immigrants’ energy and positive attitude about working in low-level or difficult jobs. Business is often seen as the ―bad guy‖ in environmental matter because people feel that businesses will do anything to make a profit. Unfortunately, this is to often the case.

Many business people, in fact, believe that they can’t make a profit and be kind to the environment at the same time. However, it does not necessarily have to be this way. Using common business strategies, companies have found ways to become environmentally friendly or ―green‖ and increase their profits at the same time.

One such strategy that businesses use is known as ―product differentiation‖. This term means that a company advertised the fact that its products are different from other, similar products. ―Just think of all the things you have to be thankful for ‖ is another noise that says one thing and means another. It could mean that the speaker is trying to get you to see your problem as part of your life as a whole. But is he? Wrapped up in this phrase is the thought that your problem isn’t important. It’s telling you to think of a all the starving people in the world when you haven’t got a date for Saturday night.

How can you tell the real meaning behind someone’s words? One way is to take a good look at the person talking. Do his words fit the way he looks? Does what he says agree with the tone of voice? His posture (姿态)? The look in his eyes? Stop and think. The minute you spend thinking about the real meaning of what people to you may save another mistake.
