He was the baby with no name. Found and taken from the north Atlantic 6 days after

thesinking of the Titanic in 1912, his tiny body so moved the salvage (救援) workers

that they calledhim “our baby.” In their home port of Halifax, Nova Scotia, people

collected money for a headstonein front of the baby's grave (墓), carved with the

words: “To the memory of an unknown child.”He has rested there ever since.

But history has a way of uncovering its secrets. On Nov. 5, this year, three

members of a family from Finland arrived at Halifax and laid fresh flowers at the

grave. “This is our baby,” says Magda Schleifer, 68, a banker. She grew up hearing

stories about a great-aunt named MariaPanula,42, who had sailed on the Titanic for

America to be reunited with her husband. According tothe information Mrs. Schleifer

had gathered, Panula gave up her seat on a lifeboat to search for herfive children --

including a 13-month-old boy named Eino from whom she had become

separatedduring the final minutes of the crossing. "We thought they were all lost in

the sea," says Schleifer.

Now, using teeth and bone pieces taken from the baby's grave, scientists have

compared the

DNA from the Unknown Child with those collected from members of five families who

lost relativeson the Titanic and never recovered the bodies. The result of the test

points only to one possibleperson: young Eino. Now, the family sees: no need for a

new grave. "He belongs to the people ofHalifax," says Schleifer. "They've taken care

of him for 90 years."

Deserts are found where there is little rainfall or where rain for a whole year falls

in only a fewweeks' time. Ten inches of rain may be enough for many plants to

survive (存活)if the rain is

spread throughout the year, If it falls, within one or two months and the rest of the

year is dry, thoseplants may die and a desert may form.

Sand begins as tiny pieces of rock that get smaller and smaller as wind and

weather wear themdown. Sand dunes (沙丘) are formed as winds move the sand

across the desert. Bit by bit, the

dunes grow over the years, always moving with the winds and changing the shape.

Most of them areonly a few feet tall, but they can grow to be several hundred feet

high. southwestern UnitedStates, cliffs (悬崖) and deep valleys were formed from thick

mud that once lay beneath a sea more than millions of years ago. Over the centuries,

the water dried up. Wind, sand , rain, heat and cold all wore away at the remaining

rocks. The faces of the desert mountains are always changing –-very, very slowly ---

as these forces of nature continue to work on the rock.

Most desertshave a surprising variety of life. There are plants, animals and

insects that :haveadapted to life in the desert. During the heat of the day, a visitor

may see very few signs of livingthings, but as the air begins to cool in the evening,

the desert comes to life. As the sun begins torise again in the sky, the desert once

again becomes quiet and lonely.

Whoever has made a voyage up the Hudson River must remember the Catskill

Mountains. Theyare a branch of thegreat Appalachian family, and can be seen to the

west rising up to a noble height and towering over the surroundingcountry. When

the weather is fair and settled, they are clothed in blue and purple, and print their

beautiful shapes on the clear evening sky, but sometimes when it iscloudless, gray

steam gathers around the top of the mountains which, in the last rays of the

settingsun, will shine and light up like a crown of glory (华丽的皇冠).

At the foot of these mountains, a traveler may see light smoke going up from a

village.

In that village, and in one of the houses (which, to tell the exact truth, was sadly

time-wornand weather-beaten), there lived many years ago, a simple, good-natured

fellow by the name of RipVan Winkle.

Rip's great weakness was a natural dislike of all kinds of money-making labor. It

could not befrom lack of diligence (勤劳), for he could sit all dayon a wet rock and

fish without saying a word, even though he was not encouraged by a single bite. He

would carry a gun on his shoulder for hours, walking through woods and fields to

shoot a few birds or squirrels. He would never refuse to help aneighbor, even in the

roughest work. The women of the village, too, used to employ him to do suchlittle

jobs as their less helpful husbands would not do for them. In a word, Rip was ready

to attendto everybody's business but his own.

If left to himself, he would have whistled ( 吹口哨) life away in perfect

satisfaction; but hiswife was always mad at him for his idleness (懒散). Morning,

noon, and night, her tongue wasendlessly going, so that he was forced to escape to 68. Which of the following best describes the Catskill Mountains?

E A. Catskill Mountains. B. A Mountain Village. C. Rip Van Winkle. D. A Dutiful Husband.

Every year more people recognize that it is wrong to kill wildlife for “sport.”

Progress in thisdirection is slow because shooting is not a sport for watching, and

only those few who take partrealize the cruelty and destruction.

The number of gunners, however, growsrapidly. Children too young to develop

properjudgments through independent thought are led along way away by their

gunning parents. They aresubjected to advertisements of gun producers who

describe shooting as good for their health and guncarrying as a way of putting

redder blood in the veins (血管). They are persuaded by gunnermagazines with

stories honoring the chase and the kill. In school they view motion pictures which

aresupposedly meant to teach them how to deal with arms safely but which are

actually designed tostimulate (刺激) a desire to own a gun. Wildlife is disappearing

because of shooting and because of the loss of wildland habitat (栖息地). Habitat

loss will continue with our increasing population, but can we slow the loss of wildlife

caused by shooting? There doesn't seem to be any chance if the serious condition of

our birds is not improved.

Wildlife belongs to everyone and not to the gunners alone. Although most people

do not shoot, they seem to forgive shooting for sport because they know little or

nothing about it. The only answer, then, is to bring the truth about sport shooting to

the great majority of people.

Now, it is time to realize that animals have the same right to life as we do and

that there is nothing fair or right about a person with a gun shooting the harmless

and beautiful creatures. The gunners like to describe what they do as character-dying can make nobody happy. If, as they would have youbelieve, gun-carrying and

killing improve human-character, then perhaps we should encourage war.

72. According to the text, most people do not seem to be against hunting

because___________.

A. they have little knowledge of it B. it helps to build human character D. they want to keep C. it is too costly to stop killing wildlife

wildlife under control

73. The underlined word "agony" in the last paragraph probably

means______________.

A. form B. Condition C. pain D. sadness

74. According to the text, the films children watch at school actually__________.

A. teach them how to deal with guns safely B. praise hunting as

character-building

C. describe hunting as an exercise D. encourage them to have guns of their

The city stands on the bank of the Changjiang River. It is a beautiful place for people to livein. Its economy has been developing rapidly in the past ten years. New factories, houses and roads have been built. More schools andhospitals are available for its people. However, there are still some problems, such as water and air

pollution and heavy traffic in rush hours. In my opinion, Jiangcheng should develop its economy scientifically. I would also think that the growthof its population should be brought under control so that we'll have a better hometown in future.
