When I was laid off (解雇) from Intel Corporation two years ago, I felt very sad. I’d been with the company since 1996 and had poured a lot into my work. I was afraid that I would not find a better job.

Several years before, I had taken a comedy class to conquer (克服) my fear of public speaking. Like many other performers, I seemed shy in front of people, but after a show, people said, \

So I thought it was a chance for me to take up comedy now. It would pay very little. Luckily, I had saved a lot during all my years at Intel.

I made up jokes while taking the subway, walking around, and talking on the phone. I made efforts to practice, improved myself on the Internet, and performed whenever I had a chance. My new career took off. I’m a frequent flyer, and I get upgraded (升级) to first class on every flight.

Recently, I made $12,500 one night. I’m making more than double what I made at Intel. I’ll probably earn about $275,000 this year, not counting the advertisements I was involved in for a computer company. I also have a role in a movie next summer. I’ve become pretty well-known.

In this business, there is no greater excitement than thinking of a joke that makes you laugh out loud, practicing it for a small audience, and then performing it in a theater of 2,000 people. Getting laid off is the best thing that has ever happened to me.

Dear Ralf,

I have received your letter from school and am glad to know that you are becoming responsible enough to decide on your career.

You are now in the final year of college and are about to start a more independent life in society. You know that the conditions of social life were different in my days. However, all I can say is that you must select a career wisely. The first consideration is your interests. You can only succeed and feel happy when you do something you enjoy. Your job must be both gainful and satisfying. Then, you must read up on the latest in the field you are aiming at. Also, you should get familiar with the men and women in that field. When mind and heart function together, success is inevitable.

No career is more or less important than any other one. The machine of life is operated by different people and different careers. I think your interests may lie in the field of making TV programs. Your great communication skills, your active participation in school plays and the prizes you have won in speech competitions all point in that direction. So a career in Mass Communication and TV film would really suit you. If you succeed in that field, fame (名声) and treasure will both follow. Think a thousand times before making the final decision regarding your career. Anyhow, we expect you to be a man of success.

We all know that you are mature (成熟的) enough to think for yourself. With all the best wishes!Your loving father

The National Geographic Channel (国家地理频道) has spent two years following endangered giant pandas in their natural habitat.

Deep in the heart of the Qinling Mountains, a natural divide (分水岭) exists between the north and the south of China. A camera group is there carrying out research on giant pandas. These pandas live at a height of 1,500 meters and higher, so the work in the rugged terrain (崎岖的地带) is difficult and dangerous. The bamboo there is very thick, but soon the team discovers panda waste, which shows that giant pandas are close by. At 3,000 meters high, the team makes great progress when they finally see a giant panda after searching for 10 days without luck. The camera group spends two years going across the rugged terrain and dealing with the strange behaviors of this highly endangered species.

At birth, a giant panda is pink, nearly hairless, blind, and small enough to fit into a human hand. The mothers have to raise their babies alone and make sure their babies are warm, clean, and fed. Sometimes they have to suckle (给……喂奶) a newborn baby 14 times a day. When winter comes, their slightly oily fur keeps them dry and warm. After

a new baby is born, the mother will search for shelter to protect her baby from the cold. Bamboo makes up 99 percent of a giant panda’s diet. Since bamboo grows in winter, giant pandas do not need to hibernate (冬眠). Watch Giant Pandas on National Geo-graphic Channel and learn more about the lifestyle of one of the rarest species in the world.

66. What do we learn from the second paragraph?

A. The bamboo was so thick that the pandas couldn’t find their way through it.

B. The group spent too much time on the waste of giant pandas. C. The places where the pandas live are dangerous. D. The pandas are afraid of strangers.

67. Which of the following is TRUE about baby giant pandas? A. They are born with a full coat of fur.

B. At birth, they are as small as a human hand. C. The mother and father raise them together.

D. They learn to look for bamboo as soon as they are born. 68. In winter, giant pandas _______. A. don’t have to eat anything

B. change their lifestyle completely C. prefer to give birth to their babies D. needn’t sleep day and night

69. It can be inferred from the passage that ______.

A. people who like history might enjoy watching Giant Pandas

B. the team members were excited when they found the giant panda waste C. the program Giant Pandas provides all information about giant pandas D. the Qinling Mountains are a natural line between the east and the west of China 70. Dust storms are violent and mostly unpredictable. They can cause property damage, injuries, and deaths, so it’s necessary to know what to do when you come across them. Watch out for dust storm warnings. Dust storms are most likely to occur on hot summer days, so listen to the local TV or radio broadcasts before traveling in hot, dry conditions, and consider changing or giving up your trip if dust storms are predicted. Roadside signs may also be able to warn you of dust storm danger.

Be prepared. If you are in a storm-prone area, carry a mask to keep out small dust particles (颗粒), and take eye protection to protect your eyes. A supply of water is also necessary.

Go beyond the storm. If you see a dust storm from some distance, and you are in a vehicle, you should try to escape from it. Some dust storms can travel at more than

75 miles per hour, but they frequently travel much slower. However, it is not advisable to put yourself at risk by driving at high speed.

Stay in side. Do not move about in a storm, as you will not be able to see hidden risks in your path. So if you’re in a house, stay inside.

Protect yourself from flying objects. Cover as much of your body as possible. A dust storm’s high wind can carry heavy objects. If you find yourself without shelter, try to stay low, close to the ground, and protect your head with your arms, a backpack or a pillow.

71. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 4 mean? A. Dust storms usually travel much slower than vehicles.

B. Don’t be so worried about dust storms in the distance.

第四部分:书面表达(共两节, 满分45分)

◆第一节阅读表达(共5小题;每小题3分,满分15分)

阅读下面短文,并根据短文后的要求答题(请注意问题后的字数要求)。

[1] The dust storm is one of the most destructive disasters in the world. The sky of Beijing turns yellow as clouds of sand sweep down from the deserts of Mongolia and north-western China. Strong winds carry the dust and it covers everything in sight. In 2006, a storm threw about 300,000 tons of dust over Beijing in one night.

[2] The number of sandstorms has grown quickly over the years as the deserts expand. This is partly man-made and partly caused by the climate. Grasslands have been over-grazed (过度放牧) by sheep and goats, leaving only the soil. Too much water has been pumped(泵抽水)off from rivers and underground. This is made worse by lasting and prolonged droughts that have dominated the northern part of China as the climate grows warmer and more changeable. The result is probably the worst loss of productive land to deserts in the world.

[3] The closest sand dune to Beijing is now only 70km away and it is moving closer each year. If we don’t do anything, the desert will reach the outskirts of the city by 2040, and Beijing would be in danger.

[4] ________________, a huge programme of forest planting called the Great Green Wall has been underway for over 30 years. The barrier(屏障)is planned to be 4,500km long. However, the drought is damaging the trees and the desert is still growing at present. We should put more effort in it.

76. Where does the dust storm in Beijing come from? (within 8 words) ____________________________________________

77. Which sentence in the passage is the closest in meaning to the following one? With the growth of the deserts, there has been an increasing number of sand storms in recent years.

78. Fill in the blank in Paragraph 4 with proper words. (within 5 words) ____________________________________________

79. List two man-made reasons for the increase in sand storms in recent years according to the passage. (within 8 words) ①____________________ ②__________________

80. Translate the underlined sentence in Paragraph 4 into Chinese. ____________________________________________

Recent decades have seen a rapid increase in the number of overweight kids in China, especially in bigger cities. It’s reported that about 15 percent of Chinese boys and 10 percent of girls between 6 and 18 are overweight. The youngest kids are only six or seven, and the heaviest kids weigh more than 100 kg. Many parents are trying to change the situation, and they are taking their children to see doctors. Chen Ruimin, a leading doctor at the Fuzhou Children’s Hospital in southeast Fujian Province, says unhealthy diets are the main reason why children are becoming overweight. The kids are eating too much high-fat fast food and too many sweets, while drinking too many soft drinks. Since they don’t get enough physical exercise, they become fat easily, and at risk for getting high blood pressure and heart disease. Nowadays schools are making efforts to prevent their students from becoming overweight by changing lunch menus and concentrating on physical exercise. Parents, teachers and children should all realize the seriousness of this problem.
