On race day, people noticed that there was a woman. Switzer was at mile

two when race manager, Jock Semple, ran up and tried to get her out of the race, shouting, "Get the hell out of my race!" But with her boyfriend knocking Semple back, she finished in four hours and twenty minutes.

To mark the 50th anniversary(周年纪念) of her first run, Switzer, now 70, plans to repeat the 26.2-mile journey this month. In the race, Switzer will wear the number 261, the same one she wore in her run 50 years ago. In her honor, the Boston Marathon will leave the number out in future races.

Switzer has run 39 marathons, including coming in first in New York in 1974 and running in the Olympics in 1984. Her personal best performance for marathon was in Boston in 1975, three years after women were officially allowed to enter it. Her number might not show up in the Boston Marathon again, but Switzer's movement goes beyond letting women enter that race.

Founding a nonprofit (非盈利的) international women's running club, Switzer chose the name 261 Fearless. "My goal is to reach women in places right now where they're not allowed to leave the house alone, drive a car or get an education," Switzer said. If you're dreaming of visiting one of those picture perfect European towns filled with old world attractiveness and scenic beauty, here is a look at the most beautiful small towns in Europe.

The energetic trading port of Marsaxlokk, Malta, was built in 900 BC. Today, this pretty town is the main supplier of fish to the island nation that sits in the Mediterranean Sea. It has no modern buildings to ruin its appeal. With such quiet surroundings, including the traditional luzzus(fishing boats), it's a particularly attractive place to visit.

Portmagee, Ireland

In a country filled with beautiful towns, Portmagee is a standout, sitting on the southwest coast of Ireland. This postcard perfect seaside fishing town has a row of brightly colored buildings along with a rich and colorful history. At The Bridge Bar, you'll find live music many nights of the week along with fantastic food and a fine pint of beer.

With a height of 8,844 meters, Qomolangma is the world's highest mountain and attracts thousands of visitors and mountaineers every year from around the world.

The altitude between 5,200 and 6,500 meters is where most of the human activities such as mountaineering and training take place, and so it has the most waste. More than 100 climbers have collected 4.5 tons of rubbish on the north slope(坡) of Qomolangma in the yearly cleanup campaign. Of the 4.5 tons

8

collected so far, about one-third is tin cans. Other waste left by mountaineers includes plastic bags, oxygen tanks and mountaineering ropes.

The volunteers, including local Tibetans, mountaineers from China and more than 20 other countries, and people from Tibet's mountaineering work units, have been working at altitudes of between 5,200 and 6,500 meters since May 6. This cleanup campaign is started as a sign of fact that China has realized the importance of the environment.

The organizers-the China Mountaineering Association and the Tibet Sports Bureau have got 102 yaks(牦牛) to carry the waste down to the base camp at an altitude of 5,200 meters for sorting. The garbage is then trucked to Dingri county for further treatment.

The cleanup work on the north slope started in 1997. But this year's efforts have reached a higher altitude than past efforts. The bureau are considering cleanup campaigns at higher altitudes, probably reaching 8,300 meters, starting next year. Nyima Tsering, deputy director of the Tibet Sports Bureau, said the bureau has plans to build sorting and recycling stations along the campsites on the north slope. They are also planning to form a professional(专业的) cleanup team that can remove waste and take part in rescue operations when necessary. 29.According to the text, the cleanup campaign of this year ________. A.collected more waste than before

Oxford English Dictionary editors recently said that "run" has become the word with the most meanings in English, with more than 645 different usage cases for the verb form alone. This entry(条目), took one professional dictionary writer nine months of research to complete. How could three little letters be responsible for so many meanings?

Think about it: When you run a fever, for example, those three letters have a different meaning than when you run a bath to treat it, or when your bathwater runs over and makes your bath runner wet, forcing you to run out to the store and buy a new one. There, you run up a bill of $85 because besides a small carpet and some cold medicine, you also need some thread to fix the run in your stockings and some tissue for your runny nose and a carton of milk because you've run through your supply at home, and all this makes fear run through

10

your soul because your value club membership runs out at the end of the month and you've already run over your budget on last week's grocery run when you ran over a nail and now your car won't even run properly. God—you'd do things differently if you ran the world.

When the OED's first edition came out in 1928, the longest entry belonged to another three letter word: "set". Today, it has some 200 meanings.

Why is "run" suddenly the Swiss Army Knife of verbs? According to British author Simon Winchester, "run" has earned some major lift during the Industrial Revolution (工业革命), when new inventions chose it as their verb of choice. "Machines run, clocks run, computers run there are all of those that began in the middle of the 19th century," Winchester says.

So, ready to run through the whole list of definitions(定义)? You'll have to wait for the next edition of the OED, expected in 2037.

32.What may be the best title of the text?

A.The Next Edition of the OED Is Expected in 2037

B.You'd Do Things Differently If You Run the World

C.The Word with the Most Meanings Is Only Three Letters Long

D.It Takes One Dictionary Writer Nine Months to Complete an Entry 33.What does the underlined part "bath runner" in Paragraph 2 refer to?

A.A small carpet. B.A carton of milk.

C.A membership card. D.A kind of cold medicine.

34.The second paragraph of the text is written to ________.

11

A.explain how to use "run" correctly

B.give examples of the meanings of a word

C.give an account of a terrible experience

D.explain why someone is short of money

35.According to Simon Winchester, ________.

A.words with fewer letters usually bear more meanings

B.even today the word "set" still has the most meanings

C.200 meanings will be added to "run" in the next edition of OED

D.social development can influence the way words are used

Habits That Prove You're Smarter Than Everyone Else ____36____ But science has connected the following habits with higher levels of learning, problem solving, and creativity.

You'd think someone who was intelligent would have everything in their work space arranged(安排) neatly. ____37____ In an experiment from the University of Minnesota, people in a messy setting came up with more creative ideas than those in a neat space. "Perhaps some smart people stay up late because they like being up late at night without being disturbed to think and solve problems," Dr. Wai says. ____39____ You daydream.

A study from the University of California found that when given a demanding task, people who took a break for undemanding tasks did better at the original task. ____40____ "Actually, you are working on a problem in the back of your mind even when you aren't directly thinking about it," Dr. Wai says. "Some stories of scientific discovery have mentioned how that can help your mind come up with different ways of viewing a problem and increase creativity." So if daydreaming is one of your habits, you may have higher creative and problem solving skills.

A.But that's not the case.

B.Intelligence can be hard to measure.

C.Well, it might just mean you're smart.

D.The study authors believe the root of this lies in human history.

第二节书面表达

Dear Joey,

I'm Li Hua, back in China. Thank you very much for your and your family's hospitality, without which my stay in Britain couldn't have been so wonderful.

Though it was only a two week stay, I really experienced and gained a lot. The most amazing part was my visit to those well known museums, galleries and universities, from which I got a deeper and better understanding of your history and culture. What's more, the famous fish and chips is also my cup of tea. I am expecting another visit to Britain next summer holiday!

Will you come to China this winter holiday? If so, I'd be on top of the world. You can stay in my home and I promise you a wonderful time here.

Yours,
