三、阅读理解(本大题分两节,共25小题,每小题2分,共50分)

Part 1

A

My legs don’t do much because I have a serious disease. They just sit there and don’t look

pretty. When people look at me, they only see the chair—my wheelchair. I’ve been in one since I was 3 years old. And it doesn’t matter if I graduate at the top of my class and go to law school. To some, I’ll always be the girl in the chair. But I don’t think of myself as the kid who can’t walk. Most of my friends don’t even notice the chair any more. I’m just the girl they’ve been friends with. My friends are good at lifting me in and out of my small car when we go to the movies. We even took the car to the dance. One of the boys helped me out of the car and all the girls helped me to fix my dress. Even in the crowded school elevator, there’s always someone around to carry me.

There are a lot of things I can’t do for myself, such as lifting my arms, dressing myself, and feeding myself. Even so, I do very well at school and I always tell myself that I’m just like any other kid in my school.

The truth is that my parents raised me to be proud of my disabilities(残疾). There are plenty of things I wish I could do differently. I wanted to be a doctor. But that’s not going to work out. So I’ll be a lawyer instead. I also wanted to dance and play soccer. My parents taught me that I’m like this for a reason—to educate people and show them that this disease affects(侵袭) my bones—not my brain. My friend Erica once said to me, “Kennedy, you’re not disabled. You just can’t walk.”

I know what you’re thinking: pizza? For breakfast? But the truth is that you can have last night’s leftovers in the morning if you want to.

I know lots of women who skip breakfast (不吃早餐), and they have a ton of different excuses for doing it. Some say they don’t have time, others think they’re saving calories, still others just don’t like breakfast food.

But the bottom line is that eating in the morning is very important when you’re trying to lose weight. “Eating just about anything from 300 to 400 calories would be better than nothing at all,” says Katherine Brooking, R.D. , who developed the super-easy eating plan for this year’s “SELF CHALLENGE”. And even pizza can be healthy if it’s loaded with vegetables, and you stick to one small piece.

Breakfast is one meal I never miss, and the same goes for most weight loss success stories. Research shows that eating breakfast keeps you from overeating later in the day. Researchers at the University of Southern California found that breakfast skippers have a bigger chance of gaining weight than those who regularly have a morning meal.

So eat something in the morning, anything. I know plenty of friends who end up having no breakfast altogether, and have just coffee or orange juice. I say, try heating up last night’s leftovers --- it may sound crazy, but if it works for you, do it! I find if I tell myself, “You can always eat it tomorrow,” I put away the leftovers instead of eating more that night. Try it you may save yourself some pre-bed-time calories. And watch your body gain the fat-burning effects. 41 The word “leftovers” in Paragraph 1 probably means _______.

A. food which is left after a meal B. things left undone

C. meals made of vegetables D. pizza topped with fruit

C. heat up food before eating it D. eat calorie-controlled food

44. The passage is written mainly for those _______.

A. who go to work early B. who want to lose weight

C. who stay up late D. who eat before sleep

45. Which of the following statements is true?

A. Skipping breakfast can help you lose weight.

B. The author always has leftovers for breakfast.

C. Not eating breakfast can save you 300 to 400 calories.

D. Some women believe that they can save calories by skipping breakfast.

C

You know that pearls grow inside oysters(牡蛎), but would you ever think to look for diamonds inside an ostrich(鸵鸟)? Well, a hunter once shot an ostrich and discovered, to his great surprise, that the big bird had swallowed(吞) a bunch of diamonds(钻石). How could such a strange thing happen?

Like many other birds, the ostrich swallows small stones that stay inside its “gizzard”. The gizzard is a bird’s second stomach. It is where the food is ground up(磨碎). The small stones help to grind up the food so it can be digested(消化). The small stones do the chewing because birds don’t have teeth. In that case of the ostrich with the diamonds, the bird simply had expensive taste in rocks. It used the diamonds to digest its dinner.

Diamonds and stones aren’t all that an ostrich will swallow. If there are no stones around, it will eat just about anything. Sadly for ostriches in zoos, this can be a fatal habit. The tendency to swallow anything it sees has caused the death of many an ostrich. Cruel or careless people often throw things into the bird’s living space. They throw keys, coins, and even large objects such as horseshoes. The ostrich swallows them without hesitation(犹豫). Coins can be the worst. Inside the ostrich they wear down(磨损) to a razor-sharp edge. They will cut open the bird’s gizzard from the inside. When one young zoo ostrich died, 484 coins weighing more than eight pounds were found in its gizzard.

46. According to the passage, what is the function of “gizzard”?

A. It can help an ostrich to store water.

B. It can help an ostrich to kill its enemies.

C. It can help an ostrich to digest food.

D. It can help an ostrich to find food.

47. What does the underlined part mean in Paragraph 2?

A. The diamonds were expensive food for the ostrich.

B. The ostrich preferred the taste of the diamonds.

C. The ostrich just took the diamonds for ordinary stones.

D. The ostrich liked to use the diamonds to digest food.

48. What may lead to the death of the ostrich?

A. Coins. B. Rocks. C. Diamonds. D. Small stones.

49. The last paragraph is mainly to _____________.

A. introduce an interesting habit of the ostrich

B. call on the public to care more about the food given to the ostrich in the zoo

C. give a brief introduction to a kind of bird

D. inform the readers of the eating habit of the ostrich

50. Why can coins be worse than other things that are swallowed by an ostrich?

A. Because they’re bigger in size.

B. Because they’re heavier in weight.

D. Because they will cut open its gizzard.

D

Children seem to care so much about their names. A study showed that 25% of young children feel they couldn’t live any more if you took away their name. Another study shows that about one third of all young people wish their parents had given them a different name.

Some people choose to change their names when they grow up. Many people in show business don’t use the names their parents gave them. Have you ever listened to Stefani Joanne Germanotta? No? The answer could be “yes” if we called her Lady Gaga instead! You may never have heard of Margaret Hookham. But if we re-name her Margot Fonteyn, you might know her as a famous dancer.

In many cultures, there are special ideas about how to choose a name. For example, many people choose a name that has been in their family for many years. It tells the child where he or she has come from.

Choosing a good name isn’t easy. Many parents search books that tell them the meanings of names. They could choose a name that carries a message. For example, Edith means “valuable(珍贵的) gift”. Amanda means “love”. And Fara means “joy”.

Names like these tell family and friends how happy they are with their new baby. Other names can say something about the events during the birth of the child. In Africa, a first born son may have the name Mosi and the name Ama means “born on Saturday.”

But can our names influence our lives? Some experts say that they can but others disagree. Is every girl called Malak like an angel? Is every boy called Curitis polite? And is every girl called Mahira quick and full of energy? No parents can tell what kind of person their child will grow up to be. Just because parents name a boy Fahim, it doesn’t mean he will be clever. All they can do is hope.

51. Paragraph 2 is mainly about ______________.

A. a famous dancer called Margot Fonteyn

B. why Lady Gaga changed her name

C. different names in show business

D. grown-ups changing their names

52. Ama is a name used to show ___________.
