In a video posted online, a United Airlines passenger, who is an Asian, is shown with a bloody face after he was forced off an overbooked flight on April 9, 2017, making the already troubled airline earn more bad press.

Overbooking on flights happens all the time. Empty seats cost airlines money, so they offset(抵消) the number of passengers who miss flights by selling several more tickets. In this case, the problem arose because United(美联航) decided at the last minute to fly four employees to a connection point and needed four passengers to make way for them.

3

Normally, when there's an overbooking issue, airlines will offer compensation(赔偿) to the passengers who are willing to take a later flight. At first, they were offered $400, a hotel room for the night, and a flight the following afternoon. When no one took the offer, the amount was upped to $800. Still no volunteers. So a manager boarded the flight and informed passengers that four people would be selected to leave the flight.

A couple who were selected agreed to leave the plane voluntarily. However, A man refused, saying he was a doctor and had to see patients in the morning. An airline manager told him that security would be called if he did not leave. Then, security officers came to speak to him. Their conversation ended with the man being yanked(猛拉) from his seat onto the floor and dragged off, blood visible on his face.

This incident caused a stir in public. Many criticized United's racism and cruelty. Some even called for a boycott of the airline. The company is facing increasing pressure around the world. United is also suffering from broader worries among investors (投资人)about US airline performance. 24. What can we learn about overbooking on flights?

A. It rarely occurs. B. It makes more money. C. It's for employees. D. It always causes problems. 25. What do airlines usually do first when there's an overbooking issue? A. Select some passengers randomly and ask them to leave. B. Call the security and force some passengers to leave. C. Find some volunteers and offer them compensation.

D. Require the last few passengers not to board the plane. 26.Why did the man refuse to leave the plane? A.He was unsatisfied with the compensation. B. He was frightened by the security officers. C. He had got an appointment the next day. D.He was badly injured and was bleeding.

27.What can be learned from the last paragraph? A. The company's reputation is greatly damaged. B. The company has already lost many investors. C. Incidents like this will not happen again. D. No passengers will take United's flights.

The African elephant, the largest land animal remaining on earth, is of great importance to African ecosystem(生态系统).Unlike other animals, the African elephant is to a great extent the builder of its environment. As a big plant-eater, it largely shapes the forest and savanna(大草原) surroundings in which it lives, therefore setting the terms of existence for millions of other animals that live in its habitat(栖息地).

It is the elephant’s great desire for food that makes it a disturber of the environment and an important builder of its habitat. In its continuous search for the 300 pounds of plants it must have every day, it kills small trees and under-bushes, and pulls branches off big trees. This results in numerous open spaces in both deep

4

tropical forests and in the woodlands that cover part of the African savannas. In these open spaces are numerous plants in various stages of growth that attract a variety of other plant-eaters.

Take the rainforests for example. In their natural state, the spreading branches overhead shut out sunlight and prevent the growth of plants on the forest floor. By pulling down trees and eating plants, elephants make open spaces, allowing new plants to grow on the forest floor. In such situations, the forests become suitable for large hoofed plant-eaters to move around and for small plant-eaters to get their food as well.

What worries scientists now is that the African elephant has become an endangered species. If the elephant disappears, scientists say, many other animals will also disappear from vast areas of forest and savanna, greatly changing and worsening the whole ecosystem.

28.What does the underlined phrase “setting the terms” most probably mean? A. Improving the quality. B. Worsening the state. C. Fixing the time. D. Deciding the conditions. 29.The passage is developed mainly by_______.

A. showing the effects and then explaining the causes B. giving examples

C. pointing out similarities and differences D. describing the changes in time order 30.What is the passage mainly about?

A. Forests and savannas as habitats for African elephants. B. The eating habit of African elephants. C. Disappearance of African elephants.

D. The effect of African elephants’ search for food. 31.What do we know about the open spaces in the passage? A. They are home to many endangered animals.

B. They result from the destruction of rainforests.

C. They are attractive to plant eating animals of different kinds. D. They provide food mainly for African elephants.

Green wave was one of the four apps to be recognized at the recent i-way hackathon hosted in Israel by the car company Hyundai. The goal of the event was to discover new apps that could help improve the driving experience in new connected cars. And the winning apps were chosen for their ability to ensure the driving experience in a safe manner.

City driving means stopping every quarter of a mile at red lights. People tend to drive faster to “make” the next light, a practice that doesn’t always work and which can endanger other drivers and pedestrians(行人). Israeli developers Shlomo Shenzitz and Rafael Vianeti say their Green Wave app will tell drivers the suitable speed they need in order to stop at a red light again.

To determine the right speed, the app would draw information from both the city and from its database of users, once enough people have started to use it. When a
