阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。 A

It seems that great artists and scientists often suffer from mental problems. Both Einstein and Dickens had mental illness. Now scientists have started to look at whether mental illness and genius are linked.

Dr Adele Juda studied 5, 000 creative people in Germany. She found there were more people with mental illness in this group than in the general population. Poets had the highest rate (比例) of mental illness, followed by musicians, with lower numbers for painters and architects. Other scientists did research which also showed a strong link between mental problems and creativity. But, it did nothing to explain it. Dr Ruth Richards of Harvard University made a breakthrough. Instead of studying creative people, she took a group of psychiatric (精神病的) patients and tested them for creativity. The patients got much higher scores than a normal group. Also, the patients' close relatives were much more creative than the patients and a normal group. This suggests that the key to the link between creativity and mental illness is in our genes. But this is a problem. According to Darwinism, harmful genes should be removed. Some scientists believe that evolution (进化) has created a balance, where the madness of a few people leads to the development of the whole human race.

Geniuses may be mad, bad or just difficult to understand, but their discoveries have improved the world we live in. It seems that a little creative madness is good for us all.

B Researchers said the findings were partly related to better education and higher class, but it remained statistically significant after adjusting for these factors. Vegetarians were more likely to be female, to be of higher social class and to have higher academic or vocational qualifications than non-vegetarians. However, these differences were not reflected in their annual income, which was similar to that of non-vegetarians.

Lead researcher Catharine Gale said, “The findings that children with greater intelligence are more likely to report being vegetarians as adults, together with the evidence on the potential benefits of a vegetarian diet on heart health, may help to explain why a higher IQ in childhood or adolescence is linked with a reduced risk of coronary heart disease in adult life.

中华资源库 www.ziyuanku.com 版权所有

But Dr Frankie Phillips of the British Dietetic Association said, “It is like the chicken and egg. Do people become vegetarians because they have a very high IQ or is it just that they are clever enough to be more aware of health issues?”

Get more IQ points! B. Be a vegetarian, please! C. Vegetarian diet cuts heart risk D. A high IQ is linked to being a vegetarian C There has been a dramatic increase in the number of natural disasters over the past few years, and it is assumed that global warming and climate change could cause even more disasters in the future. Some of the world's leading cities are facing disasters like floods and heat waves. London

London's flood defences are getting older. Since 1982, the Thames Barrier(水闸)has protected the city from the threat of flooding, but it was only designed to last until 2030 and close once every two or three years. About 21 years later the barrier now closes five or six times a year and according to Environment Agency predictions, by 2050 the barrier will be closed on almost every tide if the problem is not addressed. There are 26 underground stations, 400 schools, 16 hospitals, an airport and 80 billion worth of property in London's flood risk area, so large scale flooding would be disastrous. Paris Over a six-week period in July and August 2008, more than 11400—mainly elderly people—died in France from dehydration (脱水) and extremely high body temperature in a deadly heat wave. Heat waves of similar intensity(强度)are expected every seven years by 2050, so what can be done to make sure such a disaster does not happen again?

One solution is to have air conditioners installed in elderly care homes. But this is considered a short term solution, as the increase in demand for electricity also increases carbon emissions.

In Paris the local authorities are encouraging architects to design new types of buildings such as the building “Flower Tower”, which uses a covering of bamboo to act as a natural air conditioner. Shanghai

Shanghai is the fastest growing city on Earth. It has a population of 18 million and is only 4

meters above sea level. Sea levels are predicted to rise by 20 cm within the next century.

An estimated 250,000 people move to Shanghai every year in search of work, placing extra demands on energy consumption. China relies heavily on coal fired power stations, but these emissions increase temperatures and, in turn, warmer seas increase the risk of typhoons. 66. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? A. Big Disasters in the Future B. Big Cities Facing Big Disasters C. The Increase of Natural Disasters D. Solutions to Natural Disasters 67. What problem should be settled now in London? A. How to protect the city's property. B. Where to build its flood defences.

C. How to improve the function of the old flood defences. D. How to use the Thames Barrier to protect the city

68. Which of the following measures can't solve the heat wave disaster in Paris? A. Putting up new types of buildings with a covering of bamboo. B. Having air conditioners installed in elderly care homes. C. Encouraging architects to design new types of buildings. D. Forbidding the city to build “Flower Tower”. 69. The major threats to Shanghai are ________.

A. increasing population and coal fired power stations B. rising sea levels and typhoons

C. extremely high temperature and rising sea levels D. extra demands on energy consumption and typhoons 70. The purpose of the passage is ________. A. to tell us how to protect the big cities

Everyone has dreams. Usually they obey the rule that if you can dream it, you can achieve it!If you want to obtain a perfect life in the future, there are always some goals.

The first goal common to all of us is health and energy. We all want to be healthy and fit, to have high levels of energy and to live free of pain and illness. Today, with the incredible advance in medical science, the quality of our health and fitness, and our lifespan is largely determined by design, not by chance. People with excellent health habits are far healthier, have more energy, and live longer and better than people who have poor health habits. Remember that health is not everything, but without health everything is nothing!

The second goal that we all have in common is to enjoy excellent relationships—intimate, personal or social—with the people we like and respect, and who in turn. Fully 85% of your happiness will be determined by the quality of your relationships at each stage, and in each area of your life. How well you get along with people, and how much they like and respect you, have more impact on the quality of your life than perhaps any other factor. The third common goal is to do work that we enjoy, to do it well, and to be well paid for it. You want to be able to get and keep the job you want, to get paid more and promoted faster. You want to earn the very most that is possible for you at each stage of your career, no matter what you are engaged in.

The fourth goal we all have in common is to achieve financial independence. You want to reach the point in life where you have enough money so that you never have any financial worries. You want to be completely free of them. You want to be able to order dinner in a restaurant without referring to the price listings to determine what you want to eat. 1.What does this passage mainly about? (no more than 12 words) 2.Fill in the blank in Paragraph 3 with proper words. (no more than 6 words) 3.Which sentence in the passage has the closest meaning as the one below? Everybody wants to make as much money as possible whatever he does. 4.Why does the author put health ahead of other goals?(no more than 20 words) 5.What does the underlined word“them”in the last paragraph probably refer

to? (no more than 3 words)

Dear Rick,

I’m glad that you’re interested in our Learn-from-Lei Feng Group. First of all, you might need to know who Lei Feng is. Born in Wangcheng, Hunan, Lei Feng lived a short life of only 22 years . As a soldier in the People’s Liberation Army, he worked hard and was always ready to help others. He did countless good deeds in his short life and has been regarded as a national hero and moral model for every citizen.

There are lots of Learn-from-Lei Feng Groups in China’s middle schools, all of which are formed voluntarily and are usually small in size, in 3 or 4 or more. The groups carry out various activities such as cleaning the streets or parks, helping out in homes for the elderly, and so on.

As far as I’m concerned, this kind of activity is of great value in educating people and building a harmonious society.

Yours, Zhuwen
