Pride and Prejudice

Pride and prejudice is the representative work of the famous British female writer Jane Austen’s. It is a piece of novel that describes the love and marriage. Jane Austen was born in 1775, in Steventon, Hampshire and was dead in 1817. She was tutored at home. Her parents loved reading and she received a better education than many women of her time. Austen published Sense and Sensibility in 1811, the story of two sisters and their love affairs. And then Pride and Prejudice was first published in 1813. In 1816, another great novel was published, Emma. During that time, the novels in Britain were not remarkable at all and very plain. After Jane Austen published her novels, the situation began to change into another practical and reasonable style. Jane Austen’s style is easy and effortless, and she is a bright, attractive little woman, whose sunny qualities are unconsciously reflected in all her works. During Austen's lifetime, Austen's works brought her little personal fame. Through the mid-nineteenth century, her novels were admired only by members of the literary. By the 1940s, Austen was widely accepted in academia as a "great English writer". The second half of the twentieth century saw a proliferation of Austen scholarship, which explored many aspects of her novels:

artistic, ideological, and historical.

This book talks about a romantic but practical love story. Mr. and Mrs. Bennet have five unmarried daughters, but have no sons. One day, a wealthy young gentleman, Mr. Bingley, rents the house in Netherfield. It takes not very long time that Bingley and the oldest daughter Jane fall in love with each other. Because of the pride quality of Bingley’s friend, Mr. Darcy’s, the second daughter Elizabeth has prejudice about him. And some other reasons deepen the prejudice of Elizabeth about Mr. Darcy. Mr. Collins who will inherit the property decides to marry one of the five daughters so that he can get the property with a peaceful mind. But after getting the refusal of Elizabeth, he proposed to Elizabeth’s best friend, Shallotte. Elizabeth happens to meet Mr. Darcy when she comes to visit Shallotte. Mr. Darcy is obsessed with Elizabeth and proposes to her, but gets her gravelly refusal. After that, Mr. Darcy becomes to show his gentle manners and explain to Elizabeth. And Elizabeth falls in love with Mr. Darcy finally. The good result of cleaning up the misunderstanding is to build four good relationships.

From this book, the first thing I can feel is the low status of

woman in that time. According to the law, Mr. Bannet’s property must be inherited by his nephew, Mr. Collins. So marrying their daughters into the rich family becomes the biggest wish of Mrs. Bennet. No wonder that Mrs. Bennet is vainglorious and takes marriage strongly without caring whether is good for her daughters. So I think her bad behavior is comprehensible, as long as thinking of the situation of society.

Pride and prejudice is a romantic book. It portrays four couples of lover’s story, especially the relationship between Elizabeth and Darcy. Just like the title of this novel, the blocks between them are not other things, they are Darcy’s pride and Elizabeth’s prejudice. Darcy is born in an upper class family and the feeling of superior is also born to have. But as the inferior class, the prejudice to the rich people is a kind of army to protect their dignity. So the story about them is the process of cleaning up the pride and prejudice. Elizabeth is a pretty, wise and thoughtful young lady, those good quality not only help her get Darcy’s heart, but also get the appreciation of the readers. And I believe that women in nowadays should develop themselves into this kind of woman. What I have learnt from this book is not just about what a good unmarried young lady should be, also

about the author’s viewpoint of love, which is that the marriage for wealth, property and social status is unhappy, but a happy marriage can not be without considering those elements. Marriage can’t just base on love, the financial condition is essential as well. And as a wife, she should be independent in mind. The author might be a feminist, but I think this is good for both husband and wife. And the figure of Elizabeth gives us a phenomenon that a wise woman should chase for her own equal love and independence. And I am so agree with the opinion which was revealed from this book that the happy marriage should base on love, economical conditions and something else. The story of Romeo and Juliet just offers a kind of pure and romantic love, but it’s not practical, the marriage of Elizabeth’s best friend, Shallotte,is practical but will not goes further, because they don’t love each other. Shallotte is 28 years old and still unmarried, she just want a family. And Mr. Collins wants his marriage to help his career. The marriage based on those reasons will not be happy. And On the contrary, the relationship between Elizabeth and Darcy is what we should appreciate and learn. They are equal in spirit and love each other and respect each other.

Pride and prejudice are two derogatory words, they are the

weaknesses of human nature. Even though they create classical love story in Jane Austen’s novel, they still warn us, in nowadays, that we should never let those prejudice blind us, and we should never judge people by the stereotype or the first sight or even the appearance, we need reasonable knowledge and boarder experience to help us in the social communication. We need the quality of modesty to help us make progress and to be successful. No body likes making friends with the scornful person. And pride is not helpful to our study, our career, and our social relationship.

We need to clean up the pride and prejudice in our mind so that we can bridge the gap between our other people. So why not be a kind and reasonable people with an optimistic mind, because when you hold these two thoughts, you won’t feel good and you suffered. And trying to think the good side of people or the world would be so wonderful to yourself and other people. We do need them in our harmonious society.
