BEIJING —With a series of measures being adopted to control price rise, the Chinese

government is confident of keeping prices at a reasonable level, Premier Wen Jiabao said Sunday morning, asking people to remain confident.

“I believe we can keep prices at a reasonable level through our efforts. As a major leader of the government, I have the responsibility and I have the confidence, too.” He made the remarks while answering a listener’s question during a radio broadcast by China National Radio.

Steps taken in the past month, including price controls to curb speculation(抑制投机) and monetary tightening(货币紧缩), had started to produce results, he said.

The government plans to build 10 million units of affordable housing in 2011, up from this year’s target of 5.8 million.

China will also increase efforts to curb speculation in the housing market, mainly through monetary policies and stricter use of land, Wen said, without giving details.

Wen said the country had a good agricultural supply base which gave the government confidence that it could stabilize prices.

In a bid to control inflation, the government has also increased the bank

reserve requirement ratio six times and lifted interest rate twice this year, he added.

Further, authorities have introduced many measures including cutting fees for transportation of agriculture products and controlling food price rise strictly. The overall price level, especially of major consumer goods, has now begun to drop, Wen said.

“The fundamental way to stabilize pri ces is to achieve a balance of supply and demand, which requires continuous development of agriculture,” said premier, adding that the central government has worked out measures to increase agricultural production.

In ancient Japan, if you saved someone’s life, they would make it their duty to spend the rest of their life serving you. Nowadays, if you rescue someone’s story, he or she will feel the same kind of gratitude (感激).

It happens all the time. Someone in a group is telling a story and, just before their big point, BOOM! There’s an interruption. Someone new joins the group, a waiter with a plate of biscuits comes over, or a baby starts crying. Suddenly everyone’s attention turns to the new arrival, the food on the plate, or the “charming” little child. Nobody is aware of the interruption — except the speaker. They forget all about the fact that the speaker hasn’t made his or her point.

Or you’re all sitting around the living room and someone is telling a joke. Suddenly, just before their big punch line (妙语), little Johnny drops a dish or the phone rings. After the crash, everyone talks about little Johnny’s carelessness. After the call, the subject turns to the upcoming marriage or medical operation of the caller. Nobody remembers the great punch line got unfinished — except the joke teller. When it’s you entertaining everyone at a restaurant, have you ever noticed how you can almost set your clock by the waiter coming to take everyone’s order just before your funny punch line? www.ks5u.com

Most joke and story tellers are too shy to say, after the interruption, “Now, as I was saying …” Instead, they’ll spend the rest of the evening feeling bad they didn’t get to finish. Here’s where you come in. Rescue them with the technique I call “Lend a Helping Tongue.”

Watch the gratitude in the storyteller’s eyes as he stabilizes where his story sunk and he sails off again toward the center of attention. His expression and the appreciation of your consideration by the rest of the group are often reward enough. You are even more fortunate if you can rescue the story of someone who can hire you, promote you, buy from you, or otherwise lift your life. Big winners have excellent memories. When you do them subtle favors like Lend a Helping Tongue, they find a way to pay you back.

1. Very often, a storyteller cannot make his point because _________. A. people are more interested in food than his story B. many guests bring their babies to the party C. he is interrupted by something unexpected D. his story is easily forgotten by the listeners

2. From Paragraph 3, we know that when someone is telling a joke, _________. A. something bad will surely happen just before their punch line B. listeners’ attention is often drawn to something else

C. the only person really interested in the joke is the joke teller D. the waiter knows when to take everyone’s order

3. How can we help the joke and story tellers when they are interrupted? A. By giving them a chance to finish.

B. By comforting them to make them happy. C. By going on telling the story for them. D. By teaching them some useful techniques. 4. What is the text mainly about?

A. People should learn how to take turns in a conversation. B. We can win someone’s heart by getting him back to his story. C. Telling jokes will make you the center of attention. D. It is impolite to cut in on someone’s talk.

Geena David knew she wanted to be a movie star when she was very young. She was not sure what gave her the idea, but she wanted to look like a movie star. “I have a lot of pictures from my childhood of me wearing sunglasses,” she says. “I used to wear them to watch TV.”

Early movie actors started wearing sunglasses not because they looked good, but because their eyes hurt. The lights used on movie sets were extremely bright and could cause a painful problem known as “Klieg eyes”. It was named after the Klieg brothers who invented the lights. Actors wore sunglasses to give their eyes a rest. But when movie stars began wearing their sunglasses in public, they quickly became a must.

Eventually actors started wearing sunglasses in their movies as well as on the street. Audrey Hephburn wore ultra-cool Ray-Ban sunglasses in the 1961 movie, Breakfast at Tiffany’s. As a result, Ray-Ban sunglasses started to appear more and more in the movies. In 1979, Ray-Ban “Wayfarers” were worn by Jake and Elwood in The Blue Brothers. Tom Cruise wore Ray-Ban “Aviator” sunglasses in the 1986 hit, Top Gun. Then in 1997, Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones made Ray-Ban “Predator” sunglasses famous in Men in Black.

Of course sunglasses aren’t just a fashion statement. The main reason to wear sunglasses is to protect our eyes against UV radiation. UV radiation can damage our eyes, so people now choose their sunglasses carefully. But you don’t have to give up style for safety. The choice of frames and lenses available these days is huge. So you

can protect your eyes and still be the coolest person on the beach. 1.What is mainly discussed in this passage?

A.Some movie stars. B.How to protect eyes C.The sunglasses wearing. D.How to be a movie star 2.Why did Geena David like to wear sunglasses? A.She was a movie star.

B.She wanted to follow a movie star.

C.Wearing sunglasses was good for her eyes. D.It was good to wear sunglasses when watching TV. 2.Early actors’ eyes hurt because ______.

A.they wore sunglasses

B.they went out in the sun too much C.the lights on movie sets were too bright D.their scripts were written in very small writing 4.We may know from this passage that ______.

A.Audrey Hephburn was a famous film star B.Ray-Ban is the name of sunglasses maker C.Sunglasses made Top Gun the hit in 1986

D.Men in Black must be an advertisement of sunglasses

Finding true happiness is a universal aspiration (渴望). We all want it, but can we all have it? Genuine happiness is written all over our faces when we are truly contented, and, likewise, a forced smile does nothing to hide underlying sadness.

Believing that everyone can create their own lasting joy, Matthieu Richard has been declared the Happiest Man in the World. Richard earned his “happiest man” status after a series of laboratory tests in 2004. Richard has shared his thoughts on happiness with a world wide audience. As an experienced speaker, he has explained his insights into happiness to everyone, from students to corporate groups. Looking inwards to find joy rather than relying on outer conditions, he believes, is the way to achieve well-being.

“It’s quite clear that the outer conditions are not enough. The way we interpret those outer conditions in our inner experience is what determines either a sense of well-being or misery. We love to go jogging for fitness and we do all kinds of things to

remain beautiful, yet we spend surprisingly little time taking care of what matters most: the way our minds function. It’s the essential thing that determines the quality of our experience.” Besides this, Richard stresses that it is not what’s happening around us that makes us unhappy, but rather the way we choose to react to it.

The pursuit of happiness is becoming a modern obsession(痴迷). As life becomes more complex, our ability to process our reactions to various outside influences comes under strain. “Genuine happiness” he says, “doesn’t mean pleasant feelings one after the other. It’s more like a series of qualities that we can develop as skills — like openness, genuine love, compassion, inner strength and inner peace.” 1. Richard has been declared the Happiest Man in the World _______.

A. because he has shared his thoughts on happiness with a worldwide audience B. after he has explained his insights into happiness to everyone C. after a series of laboratory tests

D. because he tries his best to achieve happiness and well-being 2. According to Richard, what is the best way to achieve well-being? A. Interpreting those outer conditions in our inner experience.

B. Looking inwards to find joy rather than relying on outer conditions. C. Spending little time taking care of what matters most.

D. Reacting to various outside influences in the modern world. 3. What determines the quality of our experience? A. The way our minds react to outer conditions. B. Insights into happiness that we hold.

C. The constant pursuit of happiness in our life. D. Those outer conditions affecting our happiness. 4. How can we pursuit happiness? A. Go jogging for happiness.

B. Do everything to remain beautiful.

C. Make sure that our minds are functioning normally. D. Develop necessary qualities.

Poor children in China Need More Help

Dear students,

Many students in our country drop out of school only because of poverty. They are in demand of more help. As young students, it’s our duty to help those in need. Now our school will launch a campaign to offer help to the poor children. What should we do now?

First, we should know more about the importance of helping those poor children and pay

more attention to them. Then, we should try to save every cent we can and donate to them as much money as possible. The money will be of great help in paying for their school fees. Meanwhile, we can also give away something else to them, such as our old clothes, books, magazines and some other things for their study. Finally, there’s also a good way to help the poor children, which is to be a partner of one of the poor children. By doing so, we can communicate more with each other. In our daily life, we can also encourage and help each other more. Dear fellow students, let’s start to act right now! The Students’ Union
