(A)

I needed to get some money so, after Christmas, I took a job in the clothes department

at Grahain's for the first fortnight of the January sale. I can't say that I enjoyed it, but it was an experience I'll never forget.

I could never understand why there were so many things in the sales; where did they all come from? Now I know the secret! Firstly, there is the special winter stock and the stock that people buy all the year round; some of these things are slightly reduced. Secondly, there are the summer clothes they couldn't sell last year; these are heavily reduced to clear them. Thirdly, there are cheap clothes bought in specially for the sales; these are put out at high prices ten days before the sale begins and then are reduced by 60% in the sale. Clever! Lastly, they buy in “seconds (clothes not in perfect condition) for the sale and they are sold very cheaply.”

When I arrived half an hour before opening on the first day of the sale, there was already a queue around three sides of the building. This made me very nervous. When the big moment arrived to open the doors, the security guards, looking less confident than usual, came up to them, keys in hand. The moment they had unlocked the doors, they hid behind the doors for protection as the noisy crowd charged in. I couldn't believe my eyes; this wasn't shopping, it was a battlefield! One poor lady couldn't keep her feet and was knocked over by people pushing from behind.

Clothes were flying in all directions as people searched for the sizes, colors and styles they wanted. Quarrels broke out. Mothers were using their small children to crawl through people's legs and get hold of things they couldn't get near themselves.

Within minutes I had half a dozen people pushing clothes under my nose, each wanting to be the first served. Where had the famous English queue gone? The whole day continued like that, but I kept my temper! I was taking money hand over fish and began to realize why, twice a year, Garham’s were happy to turn their expensive store into a battlefield like this.

In the sale fever, people were spending money like water without thinking whether they needed what they were buying. As long as it was a bargain it was OK.

You won’t believe this but as soon as I got home I crashed out for four hours. Then I had dinner and went back to bed, fearing the sound of the alarm which would tell me to get ready for the second day of the sale.

36. What kind of clothes is likely to be sold 5% cheaper? A. Last summer’s clothes.

B. Clothes not in perfect condition.

C. Clothes bought in specially for the sales. D. Clothes for winter

37. Which of the following statements is true?

A. The customers gave up the queuing, for which the English are famous. B. The customers kept their temper while looking for clothes they wanted. C. Small children enjoyed crawling through people’s legs. D. The security guards were fearless of the crowd.

38. In the author’s opinion, why were Graham’s happy to make their expensive store into a “battlefield”?

A. There were too many clothes and they wanted to clear them in the sales. B. They were eager to show that they were clever at doing business. C. They could take the chance to raise the prices of all their clothes. D. They wanted to make more money by having sales.

39. The expression “crashed out” means________. A. chatted with her friends B. slept soundly C. broke down D. dined out 40. What would be the best title for the passage? A. The Best Bargain B. Hunting for a Job C. Sale Fever D. A Pleasant Fortnight

Why a 15-year-old American boy wrote a suicide note and then crashed a small plane into a tall building is unknown.

Charles Bishop wrote a suicide note expressing his support for Osama Bin Laden. Then the boy flew a small plane into the 42-storey Bank of America building in Tampa, Florida.

Police chief Bennie Holder said that there was nothing obvious to connect the incident with terrorism. “From his actions, we can assume he was a very troubled young man.” Said Holder.

However, Ross Stewart, 15, Bishop’s classmate, remembers him as a “teacher’s pet”. “He told me he wanted to join the US Air Force because he wanted to do something good for his country.” said Gabriella Terry, Bishop’s teacher, recalling a class discussion about the September 11 attacks.

The plane crash took place after Bishop took off without permission. He was taking a flying lesson at an airport, about 30 kilometers from Tampa, on January 5. Bishop had been taking flying lessons since March 2001.

Only Bishop died. No one in the building was injured. The damage was limited to the 28th floor and the neighboring ones. The building reopened on January 7, except for the two offices directly hit.

It is not clear yet whether Bishop was suffering with depression (抑郁).

The incident came as a huge shock to a nation still recovering from the World Trade Center attacks. Surely now Americans cannot help but wonder what could happen if a teenage boy can still fly a plane into a building. 41. What did the boy do in this story?

Every time you go to the supermarket, you come away with your purchases packed in plastic bags. But wouldn’t it be kinder to the environment if you asked for paper bags instead?

The answer is not as easy as it might seem. Environmentalists say there are drawbacks to using both plastic bags and paper bags.

According to the American Plastic Council, 80 percent of groceries in the US are packed in plastic bags.

“The numbers are becoming huge,” said Vincent Cobb, a businessman from Chicago who set up reusable bags. com on the Internet. He notes that consumers use between 500 billion and one trillion plastic bags per year worldwide.

Some experts believe that all these bags harm the environment. Plastic takes hundreds of years to break down and, as it does so, poisonous materials are released into the water and soil.

Further damage is caused of plastic bags enter the sea. For example, endangered sea turtles cannot tell the bags from jellyfish(水母), their main source of food, and often choke on them.

Floating plastic bags have been spotted as far north as the Arctic Ocean and as far south as the southern end of South America. One expert predicts that, within ten years, plastic bags will wash up in Antarctica!

However, this kind of bag does have its advantages.

“Plastic grocery bags are some of the most reused things around the house,” explained Laurie Kusek of the American Plastics Council.

According to the Film and Bag Federation, a trade grouping the US Plastic industry, paper bags use more energy and create more waste than plastic bags. Plastic bags require 40 per cent less energy to produce and cause 70 per cent less air pollution, the group explained. They also release as much as 94 per cent less water into the water than paper ones.

But paper bags do break down more quickly than plastic bags. They don’t endanger wildlife, either.

So what should we do? One possible solution would be to use biodegradable plastic bags. “Biodegradable” means that the bags break down naturally, just like a piece of banana peel when it is left outside.

But until biodegradable technology improves, it might be easier to pack things you buy in reusable cloth bags.

49. Compared to paper bags, plastic bags________. A. produce 6 per cent more waste

B. can be made biodegradable more easily C. can be reused more often D. save 40 per cent less energy

50. By saying “The answer is not as easy as it might seem”, the writer means________. A. biodegradable plastic bags can compete with paper bags. B. paper bags seem to be environmentally friendly

C. it’s difficult to say whether plastic or paper bags are better for the environment D. the huge number of plastic bags is not produced without good reason 51. Which of the following is most highly recommended by the author? A. Paper bags. B. Plastic bags.

C. Biodegradable plastic bags. D. Cloth bags.

Michael, a typical American, stays home on workdays. He plugs into his personal computer terminal in order to connect with the office. After work, he puts on his headphones, watches a movie on his home video recorder, or plays baseball on the computer. On many days, Michael doesn’t talk to any other human begins, and he doesn’t see any people except the ones on television. Michael is imaginary, but his life-style is very possible. The inventions of modern technology seem to be cutting us off from contacting with our fellow human beings.

The world of business is one area in which technology is isolating(分开) us. Experts say, for example, that many people will soon be able to work at home. With access(访问) to a large central computer, employees such as office clerks, insurance agents, and accountants could do their jobs at display terminals in their own homes. They would never have to actually see the people they’re dealing with. In addition, the way employees are paid will change. Workers’ salaries will be automatically paid into their bank accounts, making paper checks unnecessary. No workers will stand in line to receive their pay or cash their checks. Personal banking will change, too. Customers will deal with machines to put in or take out money from their accounts.

Another area that technology is changing is entertainment. Music, for instance, was once a group experience. People listened to music at concert halls or in small social gatherings. For many people now, however music is an individual experience. Walking along the street or sitting in their living rooms, they wear headphones to build a wall of music around them. Movie entertainment is changing, too. Movies used to be social events. Now, fewer people are going out to see a movie. Many more are choosing videotapes to watch at home. Instead of laughing with others, viewers watch movies in their own living rooms. 52. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage? A. Clerks will able to work at home.

B. One can play baseball on the computer.

C. One can listen to music without disturbing others. D. One can borrow books from libraries at home. 53. The sentence “Michael is imaginary, but his lifestyle is very possible” means_________. A. Michael is a person full of imagination and he can make his dreams come true B. Michael is not a real person but the lifestyle does exist

C. Michael has ambitions (雄心) but he can’t make his dreams come true

D. Michael is a person full of imagination and his lifestyle is common nowadays 54. What will the author most probably discuss after the last paragraph? A. Games and sports. B. Personal banking. C. Personal banking. D. Music and films.

55. What is the main idea of the passage?

A. We may no longer need to communicate with other human beings. B. Modern technology seems to be separating human beings. C. We may no longer need to work in the office.

D. Modern technology makes it possible for us to work and entertain ourselves at home.
