A Brief Inst ruction to the topic of “How can I get to the nearest bank?

——Asking and showing the way”

Hello! Everyone .Today I’m very pleased to ha ve an opportunity to talk about some of my teaching ideas . My topic is “How can I get to the nearest bank?—Asking and showing the way” taken from the second period of Unit 8 in Book 1 . I will pide the instruction into five parts. They are “The analysis of the teaching material& Something about the students; Teaching aims; Teaching important and difficult points; My teaching theories, methods and aids; Teaching procedures.”

Part 1 The analysis of the teaching material& Something about the students

In this unit , the main purpose is to help Ss use what they have learnt to introduce some specific lines and directions to others freely, so in this period , the students will learn some words and sentence patterns about asking and showing the way, they can practice their listening and speaking ability. At the same time, they will receive some moral education: learn to cooperate with others, learn to help others in real life. But most of my students can remember the words and use them co rrectly, but they don’t often use English to express themselves and communicate with others. And some of them are not active in class because they are afraid of making mistakes.

Part 2:Teaching aims

1).Knowledge aims

(1)Grasp the words and sentence patterns about asking and showing the way .

(2) Make a dialogues about asking and showing the way .

2). Ability aims

(1) Develop the students’ ability of listening and speaking

(2) Help Ss ask the way properly and give directions for others in real situation.

3). Emotional aims

(1)To understand how to ask and show the way properly in English.

(2)To make the students learn to cooperate with others and help others in their daily life .

Part 3:Teaching important and difficult points

1)Grasp the words and sentence patterns.

2) Improve the students’ ability of listening and speaking.

3) Enable the students to learn how to ask and show the way properly and give help to others in real life.

Part 4 : My teaching theories, methods and aids

In this topic, I will use Five-step Teaching Method , Task-based Language

Teaching Method and Situational Teaching Method. I design some tasks to help the students learn. I think if I want to improve the studen ts’ oral English, I should give them enough chances to practice and I will use pair work, group work to let the students take an active part in all kinds of activities. That is “Learning by doing, learning by using”.Let the students be the masters of the class teaching, thus, student-centered teaching method is well shown. In order to make the class lively and interesting , I will use the multi-media computer as teaching aids.

Part 5: Teaching procedures

Step 1. Greetings and lead-in

Greet each other, then ask the students to watch a short video about asking and showing the way in real life.

(Purpose : arouse t he students’ in terest of study and bring in the new subject “how to ask the way properly and give directions for others”.)

Step 2 . Presentation

In this step ,I will design two tasks for Ss.

Task 1.Review(words &phrases)

I’ll show the words or phrases through some pictures on the screen. Lead the students to tell the words and then read them together, then practice in small groups to grasp them, and correct their pronunciation.

(Purpose :Make the students interested in English and remember the words happily and easily, preparing for the following study)

Task 2. Sentence patterns

Let the students listen to the tape and complete the dialogue, then have a discussion with their partners to summarize the sentence patterns about asking and showing the way in this dialogue .Then show them to the whole class.

(Purpose:Improve the students’ listening ability ,train Ss to cooperate with others, and help them prepare for following study of the dialogue performance )

Step 3. Practice

In this step ,I will also design two tasks for Ss.

Task 1 Best Voice Acting

Lead the students to see a short video about asking and showing the way in real life ,then give Ss three scenes in Chinese ,ask them to make a Best Voice Acting alive according to the short video.

(Purpose:This link is original to Ss. There will be a little challenge for them to complete this task .But it can make Ss to use the sentence patterns we’ve just learned in real situation, experience the happiness and success of their role playing.)

Task 2 Situational Conversation

Suppose our classroom is a city, there are 11 places in this city. Discuss with your group members and make up new dialogues with your group members. Then show your dialogue to the whole class. While one student is showing the way, the other one should do what he has said.

(Purpose :To arouse Ss’ interest and make the class more lively,I employ an interesting game in this step. Make the students take an active part in the teaching and practice their speaking ability, what’s more, let them learn to cooperate with others and enjoy the happiness of study.)

Step 4 . Summary and development

Let Ss enjoy a short video recorded by myself to review what we have learned and think about what attitude we should have to the people who ask the way, and what we should do when asking for directions.

(Purpose of my designing: To help Ss review and consolidate what they have learned and learn to help others warmly in their daily life and ask for help politely. Be kind to others, be kind to our life. )

During my teaching,I’ll try my best to get my class alive and encourage the students to talk with each other in English. I think the general aim of English teaching is to improve the ability of using English. And I’ll use this to guide my teaching. Thank you!
