Thoughts from New York to Cape Ann

After taking this class, I have learnt a lot about western countries including culture, history and social customs.

In this course, our teachers introduced many famous cities in western countries, among which two places——New York and Cape Ann——impressed me most. Each of them has a unique style of their own, so that different kinds of people abroad can find an ideal place to live in America.

Obviously, New York is a big modern city, possessing a rich group of landmarks and great attractions. Landmarks define a city, and New York is no exception. The city is host to many magnificent well-known sights and structures worthy of visiting. The statue of Liberty greeted millions of immigrants as they came to America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Empire State Building and the World Trade Center are several of the tallest buildings in the world. What’s more, New York is the city of skyscrapers. Besides, there are also some grandeur museums, famous universities and libraries in New York, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the American Museum of Natural History, Columbia University and the New York Public Library. Although there is no denying that all these spectacular architectures are the miracles of human wisdom, they leave visitors in awe of their beauty and splendour. When you first encounter New York, it can be overwhelming. The city looks fierce, inhuman and hard, intimidating people by its enormity and complexity. The sheer magnitude of the built environment gives us the impression that the city is a vast machine pushing people moving on. The Big Apple is really full of opportunities, but it is also coexisting with fierce competitions.

The situation will change when you turn to Cape Ann. Cape Ann is a rocky cape in northeastern Massachusetts on the Atlantic Ocean. Life here is not only easy but also romantic. Mr. Lewis showed us a lot of pictures describing their daily lives. You can’t imagine how wonderful the time is when you enjoy the peaceful sunset sitting on the deck with your lover. At this moment, time slows down and the world belongs to you! Beyond that, Cape Ann is not just for young adults, and children love here too. They always go into raptures at the mere mention of the family party which has become a routine for most Cape Ann’s families. On the party, children can taste delicious exotic food, play with cousins and even have fun in the swimming pool. There are also some public activities for children, such as racing. Everybody who participates in the race will get the same medal, which not only encourages children to exercise but also teaches them not to just focus on the results. It is the process that finally decides your success. Streets in Cape Ann are lively. You will encounter street artists when sauntering along or happen to meet “Local Farm” in the fair selling cheap and fresh vegetables. Everything turns to be fantastic when life is not hurried or forced.

From New York to Cape Ann, people can experience different city styles in America. As far as I am concerned, Cape Ann is an ideal place for people looking for a comfortable and relieved life, while New York is a suitable place for people pursuing their self-development.
