Passage I

The computer is a wonderful machine. It is the most important invention since the type of engine used in cars.Today it has the greatest effect on science, industry, and business, but it is being used more in education and medicine.By the end of this century it will touch the lives of everyone, even people in distant villages. It is a revolutionary invention.

Today most computers have a memory. They are getting smaller and smaller, and computing faster and faster.Even in a large computer, the part that does the actual computing is about the size of the end of a finger.

Computers can do all kinds of work. When someone buys something in a department store, information about the sale goes into a computer,A scientist can talk to the computer about the rocks, and the computer answers the questions.A doctor can talk to the computer and explain what is wrong with a patient. If the doctor asks why,the computer goes through its stored information and explains exactly why.

In recent years, many couples continue to have a traditional relationship of this kind. The man has a job and earns the money for the family. The woman stays at home and cares for the children and the house. Many Americans are happy with this kind of marriage. But some other Americans have a different impression of marriage and family responsibilities.

There are two important differences in male and female roles now.One is that both men and women have many more choices. They may choose to marry or to stay single. They may choose to work or stay at home. Both men and women may choose roles that are comfortable for them.

A second difference in male and female roles is that within marriage many decisions and responsibilities are shared. The husband and wife may choose to have children,or they may not.If they have children, the man may take care of them some of the time, all of the time,or not at all.The woman may want to stay at home and take care of the children.Or she may want to go to work.Men and Women now decide these things together in a marriage. Many married people now share these decisions and the responsibilities of their families.

Passage 3

Did you know that the empty plastic soft drink bottles you throw away every day can be turned into carpet or automobiles parts?

That used glass bottles and aluminum cans can be turned into new ones?

And that yesterday’s newspaper can be turned into tomorrow’s?

It all happens because of recycling(再利用).The simple waste we throw away is a “natural resource”that, with recycling, can be used to produce a variety of new products.

Unfortunately,America recycles only 10% of its rubbish, burns 10% and deposits 80% in waste desposal grounds,As a result,it is having to cope with a serious solid waste problem.

Every year,Americans throw away about 160 million tons of rubbish.Of that total, plastics make up less than 8%,paper about 36%,and glass and metal about 20%,all by weight.Plastics are naturally lighter, but still, when pressed together, accout for only about 20% by volume.

As a result,in the past 10 years the United States’ waste disposal grounds have decreased from about 18,500 to 6,000.In five years 2,000 more will close.

In the process of finding solutions, some people have proposed to stop using plastics.

Unfortunately, stop using plastics would do much harm and no good.We would lose all of the safety, health and convenience features of plastics.

Besides, packaging would still be needed.A 1987 study shows what would happen if plastics were not used--the energy needed to produce other packaging, its cost, and the volume of waste collected would all rise greatly.

3

Some Americans believe part of the answer to Ameri ca’s waste problem lies in recycling everything from glass to metals to paper to plastic.

Today, recycling is on the rise. There are now more than 1,000 waste recycling programs in the U.S.Many are beginning to recycle plastics.

Right now, almost 200 companies are recycling millions of used plastic containers into toys, traffic signs, waste baskets, floor materials, and park benches.

Plastics are among the easiest materials to recycle.More than 150 million pounds or 20% of all plastic soft drink bottles were recycled in 1987.

There are two kinds of memory:short-term and 1592bc12bcd126fff7050b48rmation in long-term memory can be remembered at a later time when it is needed. The information may be kept for days or weeks. However, information in short-term memory is kept for only a few seconds, usually by repeating the information over and over. The following experiment shows how short-term memory has been studied.

Henning studied how students who are learning English as a second language remember vocabulary. The subjects in his experiment were 75 college students. They represented all levels of ability in English:beginning, intermediate, advanced, and native-speaking students.

To begin, the subjects listened to a recording of a native speaker reading a paragraph in English.Following the recording, the subjects took a 15-question test to see which words they remembered. Each question had four choices. The subjects had to circle the word they had heard in the recording. Some of the questions had four choices that sound alike. For example, weather, whethet, wither, and wetter are four words that sound alike. Some of the questions

4

had four choices that have the same meaning.Method, way, manner, and system would be four words with the same meaning. Finally the subjects took a language proficiency test.

Henning found that students with a lower proficiency in English made more of their mistakes on words that sound alike;students with a higher proficiency made more of their mistakes on words that have the same meaning.Henning’s results suggest that beginning students hold the sound of words in their short-term memory, and advanced students hold the meaning of words in their short-term memory.

Part I Reading Comprehension(40%)

Passage I

Today, supermarkets are found in almost every large city in the world. But the first supermarket was opened only fifty years ago.It was opened in New York by a man named Michael Cullen.

A supermarket is different from other types of stores in several ways.In supermarkets, goods are placed on open shelves. The customers choose what they want and take them to the check-out counter. This means that fewer employees are required than in other stores.

The way products are displayed is another difference between supermarkets and many other types of stores. For example,in supermarkets there is usually a display of small inexpensive items just in front of the check-out counter:candies, chocolate, magazines, cheap books and so on.Why are they there?

Most customers who go to a supermarket buy from a shopping list. They know exactly what they need to buy. They shop according to a plan.By the time he or she reaches the check-out counter, the customer is feeling pleased and relaxed because the task of shopping is finished. In this happy mood, the customer sees an attractive display of inexpensive goods that were not on his or her shopping list. Now he or she feels like buying something just for his or her own pleasure and enjoyment. Many customers buy from these displays of products near the check-out counter, and this is exactly what the owner of the supermarket hopes they will do.

Another important fact in helping a customer choose what to buy is where a product is placed on a shelf.A product that is placed at eye level on a shelf sells much better than one which is placed on a lower or higher shelf.A product which is easy to see sells best.Manufacturers pay a higher price to have their products placed at eye level on the shelves.

Passage 2

Obviously television has both advantages and disadvanges.

In the first place, television is not only a convenient source of entertainment, but also a comparatively cheap one. With a T.V.set in the family people don’t have to pay for expensive seats at the theatre, the cinema,or the opera. All they have to do is to push a button or turn a knob, and they can see plays, films, operas and shows of every kind. Some people, however, think that this is where the danger lies. The television viewers need do nothing. He does not even have to use his legs if he has a remote control. He makes no choice and exercises no judgement. He is completely passive and has everything presented to him without any effort on his part.

Television,it is often said, keeps one informed about current events and the latest developments is science and politics. The most distant countries and the strangest customs are brought right into one’s sitting-room.It could be argued that the radio performs this service as well;but on television everything is much more living, much more real.Yet here again there is a danger. The television screen itself has a terrible, almost physical charm for us.We get so used to looking at the movements on it,so dependent on its pictures, that it begins to control our lives.People are often heard to say that their television sets have broken down and that they have suddenly found that they have far more time to do things and that they have actually begun to talk to each other again. It makes one think ,doesn’t it?

There are many other arguments for and against television. We must realize that television in itself is neither good nor bad.It is the uses to which it is put that determines its value to society.

Passage 3

The United States is a country made up of many different 1592bc12bcd126fff7050b48ually they are mixed together and can’t be told one from another. But many of them still talk about where their ancestors came from.It is something they are proud of.

The original Americans,of course, were the Indians. The so-called white men who then came were mostly from England. But many came from other countries like Germany and France.

One problem the United States has always had is discrimination. As new groups came to the United States they found they were discriminated against.First it was the Irish and 1592bc12bcd126fff7050b48ter it was the black.Almost every group has been able to eventually escape this discrimination. The only immigrants who have not are the blacks.Surprisingly enough the worst discrimination today is shown towards the Indians.

One reason the Indians are discriminated against is that they have tried hard to keep their identity.Of course they are not the only ones who have done so.The Japanese have their little Tokyo in Los Angeles and the Chinese a Chinatown in New York. The Dutch settlement in Pennsylvania also stays separate from other people,Their towns are like something from the 19th century. They have a different reason than the other groups for staying apart. They live separately for religious reasons rather than keeping together in a racial group.

Although some groups have kept themselves separate and others have been discriminated against, all groups have helped make the United States a great country. There is no group that has not helped in some way.And there is no group that can say they have done the most to make it a great country.

Many people still come from other countries to help the United States grow.A good example is the American project that let a man walk on the moon.It was a scientist from Germany who was responsible for doing that.It is certain that in the future the United States will still need the help of people from all racial groups to remain a great country.

11.Which of the following statements can best describe the main idea of this passage?

A.The United States is a country made up of many different races.

B.is still very serious in the United States

C.has already been solved in the United States

D.is strongly opposed by many different races in the United States

14.The main reason why the Indians are most discriminated against is that_____.

Passage 4

Awareness of earthquake hazards is now well developed in many countries, and the U.S.Geological Survey has recently published a map showing the relative probability of earthquake activity for various areas in the United States,The major hazard represented by seismic(地震的)events along the great earthquake belts of the world has now been clearly recognized, and a great deal of research money and effort is being directed toward earthquake prediction and possible control.Active fault(断层)systems, such as the San Andreas fault in California, are carefully monitored for observable changes that could indicate a possible earthquake.Although the nature of earthquakes and earthquake belts are relatively well understood, the possibility of accurately predicting major earthquakes, much less controlling them, still appears remote.

Probably the most interesting development in this field relates to the Rocky Mountain Arsenal earthquakes near Denver,Colorado.In1962 injection of fluid wastes into the Precambrian basement rocks nearly 4000m below the ground surface was followed by a series of small earthquakes.Studies of this phenomenon have indicated the injected fluid lubracated(使润滑)a fault under stress and thereby promoted release of seismic energy.Experimentation at the site is still going on,but the connection between the fluid injection and earthquake activity was quickly realized.Accordingly, the suggestion has been made that potentially destructive earthquakes could be converted into numerous nondestructive minor earthquakes by using fluid injection techniques. Thus, although man has no hope whatever of controlling the major earth movements that lead to earthquakes,he may in some cases be able to influence the manner in which earthquake energy is dissipated(消散).

The man of Many Secrets -- Harry Houdini -- was one of the greatest American entertainers in the theater this century. He was a man famous for his escapes-from prison cells, from wooden boxes floating in rivers, from locked tanks full of water. He appeared in theaters all over Europe and America.Crowds came to see the great Houdini and his “magic” tricks.

Harry used these prison escapes to build his fame,He arranged to escape from the local jail of every town he visited. In the afternoon, the people of the town would read about it in their local newspapers, and in the evening every seat in the local theater would be full. What was the result?World--wide fame, and a name remembered today.
