When Henry flew from Paris to New York last year, his plane had to make an emergency landing in the Atlantic. Later, his American friends wanted to hear all about it.

“Well”, said Henry, “suddenly the captain’s voice came over the loudspeaker. He said we had to make an emergency landing on the sea. He told us not to panic, but to do exactly what the stewardess said. I was terrified, but I tried to stay calm.

First the stewardess told us to take our life jackets out from under our seats. Then she instructed us to pull the jackets over our heads. She warned us not to blow up our jackets until we were outside.

A few seconds later the caption told us to get ready to land. The stewardess then instructed us to lean forward in our seats, to put our heads between our knees and to hold our arms around our legs.

She warned us not to unfasten our seat-belts. Then we just waited like that for a few seconds. It seemed like hours.

At last the plane hit the water and stopped. The stewardess instructed us to unfasten our seat-belts. Then she told us to go to the nearest exit and leave the plane quietly.

She instructed us to pull down the red handle on our life jackets when we were outside——the jackets would blow up automatically, she said. She also told us to pull the blue handle in order to turn on the jacket light.

She said there were enough rafts for everyone at the exits. She told us to get into the raft and do exactly what the crew member there said.

Well, I did everything the stewardess said. A few people panicked, but no one was hurt. We were picked up about two hours later——and here I am, safe and well, but I don’t think I’d like to go through it again.”

When I was in the sixth grade, I became a big K-pop(Korean pop) fan. Almost half the students at my middle school were Korean and almost all of them listened to Korean music, especially K-pop. I had never been interested in it. It sounded too strange to me, but all changed in the sixth grade when the huge hit Gee came out. All my friends were singing the chorus and imitating the dance. Gee fever sucked(使卷入) me into K-pop. It became my life. I listened to K-pop non-stop and filled my iPod with it. In a month, I had memorized the names of countless members of boy and girl bands and stuck pictures of my singer “boyfriend” on my walls. I would ditch my weekend art and math classes and go to concerts with my friends. This would always result in my mom shouting that I was wasting my life. My mom thought k-pop was trash(垃圾) and wanted me to like classical music as she did. But classical music made me sleepy.

Every day during middle school I went to a K-pop gossip and news site called allkpop.com. On this site I learned that I could audition(试音)to become a singer in a K-pop band. The shining clothes, thousands of screaming fans and hearing them chant my name seemed much more exciting than being a middle school student. Becoming a K-pop star was all I wanted. I started watching the audition videos of current stars and reading blog posts from people who had auditioned. They explained much about the audition. This made me want to audition even more. After watching those videos, I saw that most of the current stars weren’t that amazing in their auditions and didn't think of myself as a good singer. “ But if they could do it, I could do that too.” I thought.

If you want to learn a language and become fluent in it, then you really need to start as early in life as possible, because the older you get, the harder it can be to get your tongue round new words and sounds. However, that is not a reason to put off learning a language later in life, because there are still many advantages to it.

As you get older, it can become more and more tempting to stick to things you are most familiar with. However, giving yourself something new to do can help to keep your brain active, and the more active your brain is, the younger you will feel.

We all need new challenges every now and then. It makes life interesting. Don’t set your expectations too high——you aren’t going to become fluent in a couples of months, for example. Instead, set yourself short-term goals——to finish a text-book or to practice your skills with a language speaker. The challenge will provide you with a renewed energy for life.

Many people, especially when they are older, put off going overseas because they are worried about communicating with the local people. However, once you start to learn a language, you will have much more confidence to travel in countries where the language is spoken. Once you are able to buy things, ask directions and have free conversations, you’ll find travelling much more enjoyable.

One of the best reasons for learning a language later in life is that you can. When younger, you probably had little spare time. Now, you probably have more time in hand because your family has grown up and you may even have retired. There are so may tools you can use to learn languages these days (the televisions and Internet are two obvious ones ), so you may not even have to pay.
