Translate the underlined part of the text into English. 1．在兽类中我最爱虎，在虎的故事中我最爱下面的一个。

深山中有一所古庙，几个和尚在那里过着单调的修行生活。同他们做朋友的，除了有时上山来的少数乡下人外，就是几只猛虎。虎不惊扰僧人，却替他们守护庙宇。作为报酬，和尚把一些可吃的东西放在庙门前。每天傍晚，夕阳染红小半个天空，虎们成群地走到庙门口，吃了东西，跳跃而去。庙门大开，僧人们安然在庙内做他们的日课，也没有谁出去看虎怎样吃东西，即使偶尔有一二和尚立在门前，虎们亦视为平常的事情，把他们看做熟人，不去惊动，却斯斯文文地吃完走开。如果看不见僧人，虎就发出几声长啸，随着几阵风飞腾而去。

2．光绪二十六年，八国联军攻占北京。慈禧太后弃城而走，一直逃到西安。和谈开始后，她并未马上返回北京。起初，外国列强的要求里面有一项是让慈禧太后退位，由光绪帝重新执掌朝廷。不过，在与李鸿章多次会谈后，他们放弃了这一要求。

第二年正式签署和约，随后过了一个月慈禧才终于从西安动身。她对外国人万分惧怕，正像她对国人无比傲慢一样。她在河南停留了很长一段时间，到了保定又逗留多日，好不容易才回到北京。据野史记载，在这漫长的旅途中还发生了一件趣事。一位地方官员送给慈禧一只猴子，她颇为高兴，竟下旨给那只猴子穿黄马褂。后来太监报告说，有的官员发出了“人不如猴”的感慨，慈禧这才发现自己的决定有些荒唐，于是又下旨给随行官员每人一件黄马褂。得到这殊荣之后，大家真不知道该感谢慈禧还是感谢那只猴子。

3. 中国对香港的政策是“一国两制”，这个原则不仅对香港经济发展有利，而且和中国本身的利益也是一致的。我们不想使香港政府在过渡时期无法正常行使其职能，恰恰相反，我们希望它能有效地管理香港的事务，中英联合声明和建造新机场的谅解备忘录就是最好的保证。至于1997年以后的，全国人民大会已通过了《中华人民共和国香港特别行政区基本法》。这个基本法就是最有利的保证。

6．中国家庭一向尊老爱幼。在大家庭里，老一辈人的意见受到尊重，小一辈的人得到全家的爱护。中国宪法规定赡养父母是成年子女义不容辞的责任。在城市里，不和家里老人一起住的年轻夫妇给老人生活费并帮助他们干家务活儿。在农村，尽管大家庭解体了，许多结了婚的儿子和他的家人还和父母住在同一个院子里。对他们来说，分家不过是分灶而已。结了婚的儿子往往把房子盖在父母家附近，这样父母和子女互相帮助、探望都和过去一样方便。

我细细量过九十九次自己标高，实属“终生残废”系列。但那时年少，血旺气盛，誓与凡俗抗争到底，于是连哄带骗将一净高1.74米女孩拐回家做起了太太，这一壮举颇为“残废人”们扬了一段眉吐了半口气。

将太太置回家中后我才意识到自己的悲哀，这一愤世之举不仅未了我“终生残废”而又平添我“终生遗憾“，我从未享受过将男人坚定有力的胳膊窝勾着太太姣美柔滑的后脖子上街遛弯的幸福。这一幸福对我来说不仅意味着双脚要离开这生我养我的土地，而且神圣的肚脐亦将昭之于众。

15. 南方一小城火车站售票厅，一个面带菜色的十二三岁的男孩帮助一个很胖的中年妇女拎着大大小小的包朝检票口蹭去。

胖妇人在检票口前的候车队伍后面停稳脚步，掏出雪白的手帕抹擦脸上的油汗。男孩在她的侧旁望着她，默默地望着，似是期待着什么。他的汗湿的衣裳很旧却也算得干净，那右边肩后有一块方形的补丁贴着，使我想起了三十年前的生活。男孩的神情谦和且平和始终，一言不发地等待着，那胖女人竟见也不见似地转动着肥胖的头看景致。男孩终于尽失了希望怏怏地从妇人身边走开了。望着他晃在风中的嶙峋瘦体，心里头突然窜上一股说不清是酸是涩的滋味。我的手下意识地伸进衣兜，捏出一张钞票，想赶过去唤住他，然而脚步始终是未动。我不知

道当他见到与那胖妇人毫无关系的我递上钞票时会有怎样的态度。我该告诉他，这不是施舍，可，这又是什么呢？

17. “不到长城非好汉”。凡是到中国的旅客都愿意去浏览长城。

长城，东起山海关，西至嘉峪关，横跨中国北部，全长六千多公里，号称“万里长城”，是中国古代劳动人民智慧的结晶，是世界伟大的建筑奇迹之一。 中国最早的长城，远在公元前七世纪就已经出现了。公元前221年，秦始皇统一六国后，把秦、赵、燕三国原有长城连接起来，绵延万余里，奠定今天长城的规模，以后历代均有修筑。现存长城，是明代修建的。

长城依山势蜿蜒起伏，宛如苍龙凌空飞舞，十分雄伟壮观，是无数中外游人的登临胜地。

22. 我到这个城市出差，昨天下午下榻在这家旅馆。他和他的妻子就住在我的隔壁。这家旅馆的条件不太好，隔墙很薄，一点都不隔音。他们说话的声音总是很清晰地传过来。很快，我就凭直觉得到了一个印象，那女人很懒，不管什么事情都爱支使丈夫：给我倒杯水；给我找双袜子……

23. 在元朝末年，朝廷变得腐败无能。许多读书人都坚信蒙古人已失掉了天命，不再能统治天下了。然而他们当中谁曾料到，天命竟然会落到朱元璋这样一位几乎终生目不识丁的人头上。明太祖朱元璋出身极其微贱，除了天生才具之外一无所有。他的父母是极其贫苦的农民，因饥荒而背井离乡。为了不至于全家都饿死，他们把儿子卖进了寺庙。朱元璋做了几年小和尚，然后就跑掉当了土匪。在当时天下大乱、反叛四起的情况下，他这么做倒是顺理成章。过了一些年，他在南京登基坐殿，开创了明朝近三百年的江山。

32. 我开始向往看到一大片的红色，来振奋我的精神。

我到西山去找枫林的红叶。但眼前这一闪光艳，是秋天的“临去秋波”，很快便被朔风吹落了。

在怅惘迷茫之中，我凝视着满山满谷的吹落的红叶，而“向前看”的思路，却把我的心情渐渐引得欢畅了起来！

10. Talking of my childhood, I’m forever grateful to my good parents. To them I owe my habit of living a quiet and simple life and my “back to nature” propensity. They gave me a happy and clean environment so that I am now able to feel content under any circumstances．I have a deep respect and love for life. I have no grievances against humanity. I think many human failings can be remedied so long as people strive with firm determination．

17. Starting at Shanhai Pass in the east and ending up at Jiayu Pass in the west, the Great Wall traverses up and down over numerous mountains and valleys in five of China’s northern provinces and two autonomous regions. As it extends over a

distance of more than 6000 kms, it is called in Chinese the Wanmlichangcheng which means “Ten Thousand Li Long Wall”. It is a symbol of intelligence of the working people of old days, and also one of the great architectural miracles in the world. Construction of the wall first began in the 7th century B.C. after Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of the Qin Dynasty (221—206BC) achieved the unification of China in 221 B.C... He had the fortification walls of the three kingdoms Qin, Zhao and Yan linked up to be a continuous wall extending more than ten thousand li (a li = 1/2 kms), which formed the essential size of the present-day Great Wall. Since then the later dynasties continued to repair and build the wall. The great wall as it stands today was restored and reinforced during the Ming Dynasty.

The great Wall winds like a giant serpent along the lofty myriad mountains. It is one of the most famous attractions to visitors.

18. First, a decision was made to deepen the reform and strengthen macro control of the national economy. This was done so as to solve conspicuous contradictions and problems which have surfaced in economic development, mainly through economic means.
