Do you agree or disagree that people can learn more from watching television than reading books.

The advent of modern technology, including television and computer, and the abundant information they provide us everyday appears to cast doubt on traditional ways of learning such as reading books. Some people are even deceived into thinking that by watching television they can learn far more than just reading books. However, I find this opinion disputable because from my personal experience, I believe the advantages of books overweigh those of television.

As a girl brought up in a big city, I've always had more access to products of modern technology. In fact, my family was one of the first families that purchased a color television when it first came to market. From the day it became a member of the family, my life, too, was made colorful because of its color. I would wake up at 7 o'clock, waiting for my favorite cartoon, and stayed up late because the soap opera was drawing to a close, and I had no idea who the leading character would marry to. Instead of reading books as I'd always do before the introduction of television, I stuck to it and completely got obsessed in the plots of movies presented on TV. It would be deceptive if I said that programs such as Discovery weren’t on every Sunday afternoon, but I seem to be more attracted by the amusing programs instead of serious programs, which enabled me to learn. My parents, too, were totally immersed in the rhythm of Blues. As a result, and not surprisingly, I did fairly miserably on my final examination and my parents were requested to go to my high school, asked what the matter with me was. It was an embarrassing time.

If it were not for the television, I might probably have sat at the desk, reading classic or reviewing key points of a biology class. There is no doubt that television equips us with considerable amount of knowledge that will eventually benefit us when we're trying to compete in a contest and win a third prize. But more importantly, what are the chances that we focus on the knowledge and information that made available by television? How many times when we intended to watch National Geography but end up watching Gossip Girl, lost in the plots and sunny smile of Chuck? The bigger problem is that we cannot control ourselves when facing interesting programs, and more often than not, we'll choose to watch less serious programs, resulting in a less knowledge enlargement. However, when we're reading books-as long as we're not fed up with the content of them-once we get involved; it's difficult to get them over again from the magic land. In this case, it's for sure that books are superior to televisions, and as a result, when it comes to extending my vision and expanding the mind, the first source that I resort to is always books. Because books supply me with the most abundant and amazing knowledge I could have ever acquired.
