My First Visit to Hong Kong

Hong Kong is always my dream place to visit and this dream did not come true until 2011. Fortunately, last winter vacation, I got a chance to visit Hong Kong and also to take part in 2011 Hong Kong International Model UN Conference. When I was informed that I could go there, I was so excited that I didn’t fall asleep that night.

Since my senior high school, I have heard of Model United Nations and known that some of my schoolmates participated in the Model UN of Peking University. However, I didn’t join the Model UN Association set up by our department and experience my first Model UN Conference until Grade two in the university. Eventually, I had a good chance to enjoy it that time.

I prepared for both the conference and the exciting journey for almost the whole vacation. Since it was my first participation in Model UN, I was not familiar with the procedure and the rules of the conference. While surfing the Internet to search knowledge of Hong Kong and Model UN, I was busy in writing my Position Paper and some speech drafts at the same time. What a busy and fulfilling vacation it was! Several weeks later, Iflew to Hong Kong with thirteen other students in our department with excitement.

I spent about four days in the conference, tired but happy. During the conference, I appreciated many of my contemporaries who were very good at English and negotiating. And their excellent capability and brilliance encouraged me to study harder and harder, more and more. After the conference, I made friends with most delegates and we are still in contact now. All of us enjoyed both the conference and the interesting activities organized by Hong Kong MUN Club.

The most important thing was that I have learned lots of knowledge about Model UN from the conference. I learned that Model United Nations (also Model UN or MUN) is an academic simulation of the United Nations that aims to educate participants about current events, topics in international relations, diplomacy and the United Nations agenda.The participants role-play as diplomats represents a nation or NGO in a simulated session of acommittee or council of the United Nations, such as the Human Rights Council or the General Assembly. Participants research a country, take on roles as diplomats, investigate international issues, debate, deliberate, consult, and then develop solutions to world problems.During a conference, participants must

employ a variety of communication and critical thinking skills in order to represent the policies of their country. These skills include public speaking, group communication, research, policy analysis, active listening, negotiating, conflict resolution, note taking, and technical

writing, such as Position Paper and Draft Resolution and so on. However, school delegation formats vary from region to region, country to country and state to state.More recently, simulation of other deliberative bodies, such as the United States National Security Council, has been included in Model United Nations, even if they are completely unrelated to the UN or international affairs as a whole.

As we mention Hong Kong, the first things we, especially who have not been there, may think of are the scenes of those native movies. Hong Kong, known as “PearloftheOrient”, is very beautiful and charming with its attractive sceneries and mild climate. It is renowned for its expansive skyline and deep natural harbor. Hong Kong, “Food Paradise”, is rich in various fruits and also all kinds of native snacks which make my mouth water. Hong Kong, “Shopping Paradise”, is absolutely one of the fashion and commercial centers in the world, where you can find goods of every conceivable kind, especially foreign brands of goods and many luxuries.

During the following 3days, I started my long-awaited play plan. I, along with my schoolmates, went to Victoria Harbor, Disneyland and the Ocean Park. Among them, I liked Disney and those pretty cartoon characters best, although I was already over 20 years old.

I visited most themed areas or lands in Disney Park. The park opened to visitors on 12 September 2005.This theme park is divided into seven themed lands in total. They are Main Street, U.S.A., Fantasyland,

Adventureland,Tomorrowland,Toy Story Land,Grizzly Gulch andMystic Point.Main Street, U.S.A. is designed to resemble an early 20th-century Midwest town;Fantasylandbrings characters and places from Disney's movies to life for children;Adventurelandfeatures jungle-themed adventures;Tomorrowland is an optimistic vision of the future; Toy Story Land, based on the Disney·Pixar film series Toy Story, will be open in the middle of November 2011;Grizzly Gulch will be open in 2012 andMystic Point in 2013. On entering a land, I was completely immersed in a themed environment and was unable to see or hear any other realm. Among all the lands, I thought Main Street, U.S.A., Fantasyland and Adventureland were the most interesting one.

I enjoyed almost every show and parade there. In the Adventureland, I experienced “Jungle Cruise” and watched “Festival of the Lion King”show. In the Fantasyland, I experienced The Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, visited A Small World and enjoyed Mickey's PhilharMagic as well as The Golden Mickeys. In the Tomorrowland, I visited Stitch Encounter and I loved Stitch very much. It was by chance that the year 2011 was the fifth anniversaryof the Hong Kong Disneyland. Therefore, I was so lucky to watch “Flights of Fantasy Parade” at daytime. And I enjoyed firework shows “Disney in the Stars”and “Tinker Bell Castle Illumination” at night. They were so wonderful that I would never forget in my life.Before leaving，I also bought a lot of beautiful and meaningful

souvenirs. I spent a whole day in Disneyland and play freely and crazily. All the things I saw, played and even ate were my best memories in my life. At night, I reluctantly walked out of the gate and said goodbye to Disney. However, I believed that I would come again one day.

Looking back, this visit to Hong Kong was really happy and unforgettable. Moreover, I treasured my first Model UN very much. I am waiting for the next time to Hong Kong.
