At exactly eleven Sir Percival knocked and entered, with anxiety and worry in every line of his face. This meeting would decide his future life, and he obviously knew it. “You may wonder,Sir Percival,”said Laura calmly,“if I am going to ask to be released(免除)from my promise to marry you.I am not going to ask this.I respect my father’s wishes too much.” His face relaxed a little, but one of his feet kept beating the carpet. “No,if we are going to withdraw(退出)from our planned marriage,it will be because of your wish, not mine.”

“Mine?”he said in great surprise.“What reason could I have for withdrawing?” “A reason that is very hard to tell you,”she answered.“There is a change in me.” His face went so pale that even his lips lost their color. He turned his head to one side. “What change?”he asked, trying to appear calm. “When the promise was made two years ago,”she said,“my love did not belong to anyone. Will you forgive me,Sir Percival,if I tell you that it now belongs to another person?” “I wish you to understand,”Laura continued,“that I will never see this person again, and that if you leave me,you only allow me to remain a single woman for the rest of my life. All I ask is that you forgive me and keep my secret.” “I will do both those things,”he said. Then he looked at Laura,as if he was waiting to hear more. “I think I have said enough to give you reason to withdraw from our marriage,”she added quietly. “No.You have said enough to make it the dearest wish of my life to marry you,”he said. 1.How did Percival feel during his meeting with Laura? A.Angry. B.Calm. C.Nervous. D.Excited. 2.We can learn from the passage that . A.Laura had once promised to marry Percival B.Laura’s father wished to end her marriage

2 Almost nine-in-ten pupils now have a mobile compared with fewer than three-quarters who have their own books in the home,it was disclosed. The study by the National Literacy Trust suggested a link between regular access to books outside school and high test scores. 3 Research led by Nevada University,in the United States, said that children coming from a “bookish home” remained in education for around three years longer than young people born into families with empty bookshelves, regardless of parents’ own education, occupation and social class. 4 By ensuring children have access to reading materials in the home and by encouraging children to love reading, families can help them to do well at school and to enjoy opportunities throughout their life.

As part of the latest study, the trust surveyed more than 17,000 schoolchildren aged 7 to 16.It found that 85.5 per cent of pupils had their own mobile phones, compared with 72.6 per cent who had their own books.Among children in Key Stage 2—aged 7 to 11—79.1 per cent had a mobile phone compared with 72.7 per cent who had access to books. 5 A.It fuels fears over a drop in reading.

B.Family encouragement is the essentially important too.

C.Children are more likely to own a mobile phone than a book. D.Reading activities at home have significant positive influences. E.That could increase children’s chances of doing well at school.

F.The findings cause concerns over the effect of modern technology on young people.

G.Children from richer home literacy environments show higher levels of reading knowledge.

4.B as long as意为“只要”,符合句意。

They fail to handle it well.

“leave” 不用再加 “out of” ,语意也

故选A。

meaning和point与of搭配。

expectations。

Percival”,

这是个引人深思的问题,该项的more likely to own a mobile phone than a book容易引起人们对这个社会现象的关注。

题中drop和fewer than three-quarters who have their own books吻合。 3.E 该项中的chances of doing well at school 和本段第五句的outside school and high test scores

项中的concerns over the effect of modern technology on young people是对这些数据的总结。 Ⅳ.One possible version:

Mark and his brother Jason both were looking at the shining new computer enviously.Jason was determined not to go against their father’s wishes but Mark was more adventurous than his brother. He loved experimenting and his aim was to become a scientist like his father.

“Dad will be really mad if he finds out you’ve been playing with his new computer.”Jason said,“He told us not to touch it.”

“He won’t find out.”Mark said,“I’ll just have a quick look and shut it down.”

Mark had been scolded before for touching his father’s equipment. But his curiosity was difficult to control and this new computer really puzzled him.

But his hand never reached the switch.A single beam of dazzling white light burst out of the computer screen, wrapping the boys in its glow (光芒),until they themselves seemed to be glowing. Then it died down just as suddenly as it had burst into life. And the boys were no longer there. On the screen, the letters changed.

Watching a sporting event with family and friends under the sun is a great experience in summer. 1 In the United States, heat exposure led to 8,000 deaths between 1979 and 2003.Luckily,a little prevention can go a long way towards making sure of an enjoyable day. Know the danger

Heat-related illnesses do not require record-breaking temperatures to occur. 2 The body’s temperature can reach 106 or 107 degrees Fahrenheit on a 90-degree day, creating a potentially deadly situation.Factors such as age, weight or a medical condition can influence people. Drink plenty of water

3 Sweating is your body’s key way to keep cool,so drink water to stay well hydrated(含水的) before you feel thirsty.A cool beer may sound perfect on a hot day,but drink responsibly.Alcohol stops the body’s cooling system and causes you to go to the bathroom frequently. 4

Wear light-colored and loosely fitting clothing,so air can go around your body and help keep you cool.A hat is a must to help you keep cool, since your head contains many blood vessels(血管),and sun block(防晒乳) is always a good idea. Take action

What should you do if you are suffering from the heat while watching your favorite event?Get up and go.It is a simple piece of advice, but could make the difference between a quick recovery and something more severe that requires medical attention. The ideal thing is to move yourself from the position you’re in to an area that is a little cooler. 5 A.Dress for the occasion B.Weather-related causes C.In hot weather,it is essential to stay hydrated. D.You may miss a little of the action, but it beats missing a lot. E.But when you add sun exposure to the crowds, the results can be deadly. F.It is also important to take advantage of services the equipment provides. G.Temperatures between 80 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit can be dangerous.

15.D be keen on doing sth.“热衷于做某事”。 注意be expert on“在??

curiosity was difficult to control and this new computer really puzzled him.”及第五段的第三句话“But his father’s warning only served to make Mark more curious.”

由第六段的第一句话“‘Yes!’Mark cried excitedly,‘It’s a computer game...’”

由倒数第三段的最后一句话“He was really frightened.”

1.E 根据后文中的heat exposure led to 8,000 deaths between 1979 and 2003可知,在1979到2003

3.C 根据本段小标题和下句中的“so drink water to stay well hydrated(含水的) before you feel thirsty.”

4.A 处于小标题的位置,和下一段的内容Wear light-colored and loosely fitting clothing可知是关于

5.D 对应小标题,和上一句move yourself from the position you’re in to an area that is a little cooler.

Ⅳ.One possible version:

Facial expressions carry meaning that is determined by situations and relationships. For example,

in American culture(文化)the smile is in general an expression of pleasure.Yet it also has other uses.A woman’s smile at a police officer does not carry the same meaning as the smile she gives to a young child.A smile may show love or politeness. It can also hide true feelings. It often causes confusion(困惑)across cultures. For example, many people in Russia consider smiling at strangers in public to be unusual and even improper.Yet many Americans smile freely at strangers in public places(although this is less common in big cities). Some Russians believe that Americans smile in the wrong places;some Americans believe that Russians don’t smile enough. In Southeast Asian cultures, a smile is frequently used to cover painful feelings.Vietnamese people may tell a sad story but end the story with a smile. Our faces show emotions(情感),but we should not attempt to“read”people from another culture as we would “read” someone from our own culture. The fact that members of one culture do not express their emotions as openly as do members of another does not mean that they do not experience emotions.Rather, there are cultural differences in the amount of facial expressiveness permitted. For example,in public and in formal situations many Japanese do not show their emotions as freely as Americans do.When with friends,Japanese and Americans seem to show their emotions similarly. It is difficult to generalize about Americans and facial expressiveness because of personal and cultural differences in the United States.People from certain cultural backgrounds in the United States seem to be more facially expressive than others. The key is to try not to judge people whose ways of showing emotion are different. If we judge according to our own cultural habits,we may make the mistake of “reading” the other person incorrectly.

1.What does the smile usually mean in the U.S.? A.Love. B.Politeness. C.Joy. D.Thankfulness.

2.The author mentions the smile of the Vietnamese to prove that a smile can . A.show friendliness to strangers B.be used to hide true feelings C.be used in the wrong places D.show personal habits 3.What should we do before attempting to “read” people?

A.Learn about their relations with others. B.Understand their cultural backgrounds. C.Find out about their past experience. D.Figure out what they will do next. 4.What would be the best title for the text? A.Cultural Differences B.Smiles and Relationships C.Facial Expressiveness D.Habits and Emotions

如果选D,from...to...

3.B their parents adored是the pop band的定语从句,adore意为“崇拜,爱慕”。

happen

to do sth.

19.D 这里考查了not only...but (also)...

由第二段第一句“The main theme is a teenage search of self-discovery...”

第二段中的“...James’ swimming coach says to him...”

由文章第四段第二句“The only clue he has is a fossil...” A项与本文最后一段中的“As a...also provides its readers with a happy ending.”不符;B项与文章第一段第一句“...but also rural England(the countryside) including remote English villages.”不符;D项与第四段第一句“The turning point in the story comes while James’ foster parents are away in London...”

Keep the scene going to the best of your ability.

Sometimes embarrassment is the toughest method of memorization. Ⅳ.One possible version:

Dear Miss Kate,

Last weekend,I together with many students joined in a meaningful activity in which all of us provided many services voluntarily for Dongfang Community.

First we went to some main streets and helped people do a thorough cleaning. And then we went to the sports center, where different sports facilities needed polishing. When the cleaning work was done, the community looked really neat and tidy.Besides,we put on many wonderful and interesting programs for the people, which brought them laughter and happiness. And the most important,we also publicized much knowledge of traffic safety and popular science.

How is it that siblings (兄弟姐妹) can turn out so differently? One answer is that in fact each sibling grows up in a different family. The firstborn is, for a while,an only child, and therefore has a completely different experience of the parents than those born later. The next child is,for a while, the youngest, until the situation is changed by a new arrival. The mother and father themselves are changing and growing up too.One sibling might live in a stable and close family in the first few years;another might be raised in a family crisis, with a disappointed mother or an angry father. Sibling competition was identified as an important shaping force as early as in 1918.But more recently, researchers have found many ways in which brothers and sisters are a lasting force in each others’ lives.Dr.Annette Henderson says firstborn children pick up vocabulary more quickly than their siblings. The reason for this might be that the later children aren’t getting the same one-on-one time with parents. But that doesn’t mean that the younger children have problems with language development.Later-borns don’t enjoy that much talking time with parents, but instead they harvest lessons from bigger brothers and sisters, learning entire phrases and getting an understanding of social concepts such as the difference between “I” and “me”.

A Cambridge University study of 140 children found that siblings created a rich world of play that helped them grow socially.Love-hate relationships were common among the children.Even those siblings who fought the most had just as much positive communication as the other sibling pairs.

One way children seek more attention from parents is by making themselves different from their siblings, particularly if they are close in age.Researchers have found that the first two children in a family are typically more different from each other than the second and third.Girls with brothers show their differences to a maximum degree by being more feminine than girls with sisters.A 2003 research paper studied adolescents from 185 families over two years, finding that those who changed to make themselves different from their siblings were successful in increasing the amount of warmth they gained from their parents.

1.The underlined part “in a different family”(in Para.1) means “ ”. A.in a different family environment C.in different family crises

B.in a different family tradition D.in different families

B.learn a lot from their elder siblings D.pick up words more quickly

2.In terms of language development,later-borns . A.get their parents’ individual guidance C.experience a lot of difficulties

3.What was found about fights among siblings? A.Siblings hated fighting and loved playing. B.Siblings in some families fought frequently. C.Sibling fights led to bad sibling relationships. D.Siblings learned to get on together from fights. 4.The word “feminine” (in Para.4) means “ ”. A.having qualities of parents

未准确理解题干中的要求,如有些题干中会提出“What’s the most magnificent...?” 又如题干“What’s probably discussed above the passage?” Ⅲ.七选五

Paying forward a little bicycle

A couple of weeks back,my friend had a yard sale, and she offered to sell some of our stuff for us.I thought it would be a good opportunity to clean my seven-year-old son’s room and get rid of some toys that he had long outgrown. 1 The night before the sale,we loaded up the truck with toys and a little bike that he was now too tall for.He had taken the bike for a final spin before we left home but happily put it on the truck for the sale. 2 It was not in the best shape and it certainly was not shiny new but it was still a bike, and the tires were still good.

3 So,after the sale was over,my friend put it on the sidewalk with a sign that said “FREE BIKE”.Within five minutes her doorbell rang.A little boy was standing there. His English was not very good but he asked if the sign was right...was the price of the bike really free? She said yes,she said that he could have it for nothing. 4 Later that evening when I told my son about the little boy that he got the bike for free. 5 He was so thrilled to hear that someone else would get good use out of that little bike. The bike was given to us,so in this way,I guess we got to pay it forward! A.We put a price of $10 on it but it didn’t sell. B.All passers-by thought it was too expensive. C.He smiled, jumped on the bike and rode away. D.The smile on my son’s face was truly priceless. E.This little bike had had at least two previous owners. F.He laughed at me as if I was the biggest fool in the world. G.We agreed that whatever we sold in toys would be his money.

5.C 播音的主体当然是announcers(播音员)了。

7.C considering“考虑到??”,considering the Soviet Union became enemy of America做前一句some Americans felt VOA’s 6 had to be changed的原因状语,表示改变广播目的的原因。

11.A 区别于后文提到的it is special English,故此处选common“通常的,普遍的”。 13.C 引导非限制性定语从句,先行词是a simpler kind of English,指物,应用which。

14.A 根据上文a simpler kind of English可知,这种新型英语要更简单,所以选择slowly,指速度要更

15.C in the opinion of...

根据常识可排除A、D项;根据around the world可排除C项。

由第二段最后一句中的...but instead they harvest lessons from bigger brothers and sisters...

Even those siblings who fought the most had just as much positive communication as the other sibling pairs.

Girls with brothers show their differences to a maximum degree by

being more feminine than girls with sisters.

1.G 本句的whatever we sold in toys would be his money 和最后一段第一句的when I told my son about the little boy that he got the bike for free吻合,说明作者决定将这些玩具义卖后的钱归孩子所有。

2.E 本句的at least two previous owners 和文章最后一句的The bike was given to us...

All passers-by thought it was too expensive.

4.C 上一句的she said that he could have it for nothing说明作者的朋友答应了让这个孩子免费拥有这辆自行车,所以他笑着骑上车就走了。

而F项的as if I was the biggest fool和本文的主题相悖,有爱心的不只是作者,作者的儿子也一样充满爱心。 Ⅳ.One possible version:

In the English Reading Week, one of my classmates recommended a quote to us,which goes like this:“Your future depends on many things, but mostly on you.”I can’t agree more with this view. It’s true that our future is determined by many things, such as opportunities and help from others, but our own attitude, determination, and hard work play a more important role.In other words,we are the master of our own future.

Take Abraham Lincoln, for example. He was born in a poor family, and only received a limited education in his childhood.Yet through his painstaking efforts,he changed not only his own fate but also the history of America.Even to this day,Lincoln is regarded as one of the most inspiring figures in the world. Therefore,I firmly believe that our future is in our own hands.

Ⅲ.七选五

What’s out there? How can you learn all of America’s colleges? How do you find the best match—the best college for you?Big or small, conservative or liberal, private or public?

There are many things to consider.Researches are essential for making a good college decision. 2 Don’t easily believe what others say, such as “Someone told me that Colorado College is too small” and “Someone told me that Michigan is too big.” Every college has something for someone. 3 Just because you have heard the name of a college it does not mean it will be a good place for you.Just because you have not heard the name of a college it doesn’t mean that you will not like it.

4 That means in these colleges you can fit in with the other students, find the level of education you need and feel good on campus.Researching the colleges means finding several colleges where you really want to go.

One quick way to research the colleges is to take a virtual (虚拟的) tour of the college on your computer. 5 Check out the hundreds of colleges on these two websites. When you find one that sounds like a place you would like to be,check out its website and learn more.Make a list of 20 colleges and then choose a short list of 10.

A.There is no college that is wonderful for everyone. B.Here are the two top websites to get you started. C.Get your parents involved in the decision-making process. D.That means collecting information from many sources. E.Colleges are the Same F.You Need the Right College

G.There are many colleges where you will be happy.

The driver rushed to open the passenger door for me... pull in 驶进;pull out 驶出;pull over 把车停到一边,均不符合题意。

6.C 根据前半句可推知,made sure I was 6 seated before he closed the door指的是这位司机想的非常周到,在确保我舒服地(comfortably)坐在座位上后为我关上门。 7.A as “一边?? 8.D 根据语境和接下来的He then showed me...

look into“调查”;look through“浏览,仔细查看”;look out “小心,向外望”,均不符合题意。 11.B 根据上文的open the passenger door for me和showed me several tapes等等情况可知,这位

12 you take great pride in your work.和下文的 feeling like I have done a

full day’s work and done it well可推知,我对于现在的这份充分展示我的能力的工作感到自豪(proud)。

for sure 肯定。for fun

为了娱乐;for free 免费地;for good 永久地。 I have to exceed the customer’s expectations!

meet the expectations of my passengers “满足我乘客的期望”。

Room 1属于名人鞋类展室,a famous singer属于a celebrity,故选A项。第一个方框中的“belonging to everyone from queens and presidents to pop stars and actors”也是解题信息。 第一个方框中的“Started in the 1950s”说的是该展室创办的时间,而非其中展品的年代,A项错;根据第一个方框首句“The celebrity (名人)footwear section is probably the

most popular in the entire museum.” 根据第四个方框中的“Designers and researchers come here to look up information on anything and everything related to the subject of footwear.”

Welcome to...Most visitors...Most of our visitors...

Every college has something for someone.

4.G 本项的many colleges where you will be happy和下一句的you can fit in with和find the level of education you need是一致的,说明众多的大学中,总有适合你的一所。 Ⅳ.One possible version:

Whom Do You Turn to When in Trouble

Just as the saying goes:life is not all roses, all of us will need someone else’s help to deal with problems that we encounter in our life. Here comes the question:whom will you turn to for help? Some say they will ask their classmates or friends for help, because they are peers, thus they can understand each other easily. However, others have different choices when in trouble. They are inclined to tell their teachers and parents the difficulties they are faced with.In their opinion, teachers and parents who are much older than them can give them a hand with their rich experience. As for me,close friends are always the people who come to my mind firstly when I’m intrigued by something that cannot be solved by myself. If we cannot figure out a solution by our joint effort,I will go to my teachers or parents for help. With their suggestions or instructions,I can finally find the best way to cope with my troubles.
