Kits Beach Pool Turns 30-Celebration on July 16th

July 13, 2009 (No. 37) -Kitsilano Pool turned thirty this month and staff are marking the occasion with a birthday cake and prizes for pool patrons(老主顾). Noon

Thursday, July 16th Kitsilano Pool

2305 Cornwall Avenue

This popular summer destination, located on English Bay in Kitsilano Beach Park, is heated and offers easy access “beach entry” for children. Vancouver's largest draw and fill salt water pool first opened at the water's edge in 1931 and became an instant success. It was replaced in 1979 by a state of the art oceanside tank (about 150 meters at its outer most edge). When the new pool opened, it was the largest saltwater pool in North America and cost $2.2 million to build. It is still the only salt water pool in Vancouver.

July 17, 2009 (No. 38)-The Vancouver Park Board is asking residents to help care for Vancouver’s street trees this summer by watering trees adjacent to (next to) their property. Warm, dry weather can be especially damaging to newly planted trees which are still establishing their root systems. Trees planted within the last four years-many of which have “new tree” tags attached-would benefit most by watering

at this time.

Residents can help by watering street trees with at least 12 to 20 litres of water (five to 10 minutes with a slow running hosepipe) twice per week over the roots. Regional water restrictions do not apply to trees and shrubs, but be water-wise by ensuring that all of it gets to the tree.

In the past decade the Park Board has planted over 40,000 new trees on our streets. It is estimated that the 135,000 trees currently found on our streets are valued at approximately $500 million.

Extreme fire hazard(danger) rating in Vancouver parks

July 22, 2009 (No. 41)-Park Board staff raised the fire hazard rating to extreme today in Vancouver parks following several weeks of warm, dry conditions. Effective today, the following precautions are now in place: ·No smoking in parks or on trails

·No charcoal or wood burning barbecues (gas barbecues are permitted but must be elevated off the ground at least 75cm) ·Stay on trails

Fire hazard signage is in place in Vancouver’s heavily wooded parks-Stanley Park, Everett Crowley Park and Jericho Beach Park-which are especially vulnerable(易受攻击的) to fires.

Park visitors should take precautions against accidental fires and be alert to signs of fire or smoke:

·Campfires are not permitted at any time in any of Vancouver’s parks or beaches ·Report any signs of smoke or fire by calling 9-1-1 immediately

·Watch for forest fire hazard signs in some parks and additional fire safety information posted in parks and on the Park Board website The Park Board works together with Vancouver Fire & Rescue Services and Metro Vancouver Regional District to provide a coordinated approach to fire prevention, suppression, preparation and protections for Vancouver’s urban forests and parks. Maintenance staff and Park Rangers(护林员) are vigilant(警觉) to keeping our parks fire safe. Fire prevention, however, is everyone’s responsibility.

请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。 注意:每个空格只填1个单词。

Beggars are often seen sitting by the side of a street with heads bowed as people pass them by. Some ask people passing by for a small amount of money and some just sit and wait to be given money. A few use aggressive behaviour to earn money.

To solve the problem of aggressive begging, an “alternative giving” plan has been suggested. Ten blue money boxes will be placed in busy places such as the market and the railway station. It is aimed at encouraging people not to give money directly to beggars but instead to give money generously to local homeless causes.

Supporters of this plan think it will have a good effect on solving the beggars’ alcohol and drug problems. But the police are not in favour of the plan. They argue that beggars who do not receive cash may commit crimes to satisfy their own needs. The homeless charity says that the success of any plan will depend on its style. They think that in a certain degree imaginative and positive plans may help to create local understanding and sympathy. Most of the beggars dislike the plan because they think they will not get enough money from the boxes for their showers, food and clothes.

Begging is a big social problem both in developing and developed countries. Governments must play an active part in solving this problem. Training beggars to work and helping them to find appropriate jobs is one choice. This is especially true for developing countries where many low-skill jobs exist.

The public should also be educated to see a beggar not as dirty and dangerous, but as people who need understanding and help.
