In junior high school, one of my classmates, Ethan, was addicted to TV. This boy simply knew everything about such pop shows as Who’s the Boss?

Then one day Ethan’s mother made brim an offer in order to draw him back to his school subjects. She promised that she would give him $200 if he could go a full month without watching any TV. None of us thought Ethan could do it, but he did quite well. His mom paid him $200. He went out and bought a TV, the biggest he could find.

In recent years, hundreds of schools have carried out experiments with paying kids with each for showing up or getting good grades. All school kids admire this trend. But it upsets adults. Teachers say that we are rewarding kids for doing what they should be doing of their own will. Psychologists warn that money can actually make kids perform worse by making the act of learning cheap. The debate has become a typical battle over why our kids are not learning at the rate they should he despite decades of reforms and budget increases.

With the development of our modern society, people’s living conditions become much more comfortable. I think that using money to encourage children to study hard is a good choice. This teaches children that hard work is rewarded, and there are consequences for their actions. I would say it was worth it. Education becomes more and more important. Many parents will spend a large sum of money educating their children. When I was young, my parents paid me for excellent grades. I often spend money on my interest, such as music, sport, study and so on. I can also save the money and put it in the bank, which is also a good way to teach me some money management. It was an extra motivator for me to do my best. And it worked. In other words, if I get the scholarship when I do go to college, I could save some money for my family. In the long run, paying your children for good grades is a small investment with the opportunity for huge gains. To sump up, I think occasional awards are okay. Rewarding students for good grades is like a double-edged sword. We should make the best use of one edge and try not to be hurt by the other.

From the passage, I know that Ethan’s mother paid money to him to keep away from TV and go back school, but she failed, which indicates that paying cash is not a proper method to encourage children to study well. When I was young, I was not a smart girl. Sometimes my parents felt disappointed because I got poor grades. Fortunately, unlike other parents, they seldom blamed me with hash words or beat me. They always helped me analyze the problems and told me that they believe that I could do better next time. A warm word may make a much better effect on children than¥100.I got constant praise and encouragement for my efforts. Thanks to that, I enjoyed a happy childhood and made progress step by step. I agree with the non-money for good grades. The reasons are as follows: first, I think it may mislead children to think that money is powerful. Second, it may make student lose their direction in studying. Last but not the least, this education may lead children to build up a

4

wrong attitude towards their life. In my opinion, I think parents should pay more attention to spiritual encouragement than material one.

Jackie is perhaps the most easily annoyed koala(考拉)at the Featherdale Wildlife Park in southern Australia. All the koalas there are unhappy and complaining. You would be too if you wereused to night activities and someone kept waking you up all day while you were trying to sleep it off. That’S right--sleep it off.The average koala is always half asleep because it feeds on the leaves of a special kind that makes it sleepy.

The reason Jackie and her fellow koalas are repeatedly awoken from their deep sleep is so they can be hugged and photographed by tourists, who make the trips to Featherdale and an increasing number of other national parks for just that special experience.Whatever department in

the Aussie government in charge of such things is now moving to make the practice illegal, which is understandable. How would you react,my friend,if you were trying to sleep off a dozen times and some round, furry creature smelling of grass kept waking you?

The short passage describes a phenomenon that koalas at the Featherdale Wildlife Park are repeatedly awoken up from deep sleep, because tourists want to hug them and be photographed with them. What’s your reaction to the practice?

With the development of the modern world, more and more peolpes tend to visit zoo. In the eyes of the tourists, animals are lovely. They even treat them like children, so that they can’t help hugging them and being taken photos with these cute creatures. But these practice does do harm to animals. Take those koalas for example. They are waken up now and then, so that they can’t have a good rest and they feel sleepy and bored easily. How poor they are! Try to inmagine that if you were trying to sleep off a dozen times and some round, furry creatures kept waking you, how angry you would be. So as for me, it is necessary to prevent the tourists being taken photos with animals. They are also creatures and they also need rest.

Give them some spare time and let them sleep!

Koalas at the Featherdale Wildlife Park in southern Australia are repeatedly awoken up to be photographed with tourists. This practice does affect Koalas’ rest, which make them unhappy and even annoyed. Animals are cute and they are different from human beings. When tourists visit the zoo, they always want to make their trips special, so they hug animals and are photoed with animals. But they never think of the animals feelings. Once I was in a zoo, I saw a tourist hug a monkey and the monkey seemed unwilling to be hug. I aksed the tourist whether she thought about the animal’s feelings, and she said, “I don't think it has its own feelings.”

They think animals’ existence is only to satisfy our need or desire. How terrible it is! They should exchange their position with animals. In this case, they can find animals’ normal life is

6

terrible and their health is in danger. In my opinion, that the department makes the practice illegal is reasonable and understandable. Animals also need to live a normal life, and human beings shouldn’t be allowed to bother them.

It was hard for Mike to accomplish the general adjustment but he began to enjoy himself after that owing to different activities. In his opinion, freshmen should be active in order to make new friends.

Personally, I’m preparing to enter a university and leaving the high school where I’ve been studying for three years. I really had a fabulous time in this school where I grew from a lovely child to an adult. I think I will considrately miss my life here and every sngle person I met here. Meanwhile, I am looking forward to my new college life. I sometimes daydream that maybe I’ll have friendly roomates and be taught by a group of warm-hearted and excellent teachers. It will be wonderful if this ideal daydream come into reality! However, life is not always all roses and you’ll never know what you will meet in your school. But I’am an active girl and I will do what Mike taught us to---take part in various activities.
