Ⅲ.阅读理解

Now and then I have tested my seeing friends to discover what they see. Recently I was visited by a very good friend who had just returned from a long walk in the woods, and I asked her what she had observed. “Nothing in particular,” she replied. But for long I have been accustomed to such responses, and become convinced that the_seeing_see_little.

How was it possible, I asked myself, to walk for an hour through the woods and see nothing worthy of note? I—who cannot see, find hundreds of things to interest me through mere touch. I feel the delicate symmetry(对称) of a leaf. I pass my hands lovingly about the smooth skin of a silver birch(银桦树), or the rough bark of a pine. In spring I touch the branches of trees hopefully in search of a bud, the first sign of awakening nature after her winter's sleep. I feel the delightful, smooth texture of a flower, and discover its remarkable swirl(旋动); and something of the miracle of nature is revealed to me. Occasionally, if I am very fortunate, I place my hand gently in a small tree and feel the happiness of a bird in full song. I am delighted to have cool waters of a stream rush through my open fingers. To me a rich carpet of pine needles or spongy grass is more welcome than the most luxurious Persian rug(波斯毛毯). To me the circle of

streams through my finger tips. At times my heart cries out with longing to see all these things. If I can get so much pleasure from mere touch, how much more beauty must be revealed by sight. Yet, those who have eyes apparently see little. The whole picture of color and action filling the world is taken for granted. It is human, perhaps, to appreciate little that which we have and to long for that which we have not, but it is a great pity that in the world of light, the gift of sight is used only as mere convenience rather than as a means of adding fullness to life.

36.What does the author imply by the underlined sentence in Paragraph 1?

A.If one is always using his eyes, he would have poor eyesight. B.The sighted people sometimes fail to discover beautiful things. C.The blind people see no less than the sighted ones. D.When one tries to see, he always sees nothing.

37.Which of the following is NOT an example given to show how the nature interests the author? A.The delicate symmetry (对称) of a leaf. B.The delightful, smooth texture of a flower. C.The happiness of a bird in full song. D.The most luxurious Persian rug.

38.What does the author think is the reason why sighted people fail to discover the beauty of nature?

A.That they long for that which they have not. B.That what they have is usually taken for granted. C.That the gift of sight is a means of adding fullness to life. D.That mere touch is the best way to discover and feel. 39.What is the passage mainly about? A.It tries to prove that the seeing see little. B.It describes how wonderful the nature is. C.It tells people to protect their eyesight.

D.It expresses some thoughts on feeling beauty and sight.

American society reports many negative messages about bicycling in traffic. Bicycling in traffic is considered by many to be reckless(匆忙的), foolhardy(草率的), and sometimes rude. The most common advice given to cyclists is to avoid busy roads that provide convenient access to important places; presumably(据推测)cyclists should only go to unpopular destinations on undesirable and inconvenient roads. Another popular idea is that cyclists should stay as close to the edge of the road as possible in order to stay out of the way of cars. Getting in the way of cars is supposedly an invitation to certain death, because car drivers are often expected to run into anything that is slower or more vulnerable(易受伤的).The rules of the road that apply to bicyclists are considered to be of no use because they involve mixed with motor traffic, which is thought to be suicide. Roads are believed to be designed for cars and not for bicycles, which are tolerated at the pleasure of motorists, who really own the roads. Inferior bicyclists may have an obsolete(不可再用的) legal right to use the road, but they had better stay out of the way of superior users or they will be “dead right”.

As a result of these “common-sense” beliefs, American bike-safety programs developed by motoring organizations and “pedestrian-style” bicyclists during the twentieth century attempted to teach cyclists to provide a clear path to motorists at all times by hugging the edge of the road, riding on sidewalks so cyclists can see when to get out of the way. Some towns and states tried to prohibit bicyclists from operating on important roads or roads without shoulders. Engineering projects designed for “bicycle safety” have usually involved construction of mandatory(强制的)side paths to get cyclists off of roads and mandatory bike lanes to keep cyclists out of the way of motorists.

双基限时:30分钟

The publicized benefit of these efforts is to protect cyclists from collisions from behind, which are widely believed to be the greatest danger to cyclists and caused by

cyclists'_failure_to_keep_up_with_the_desired_speed_of_motor_traffic. This is the taboo that afflicts American bicycle transportation policy: bicyclists must be kept out of the paths of motorists or they will surely be killed.

16.In many people's eyes, bicycle should be ________. A.supported B.banned C.controlled D.cancelled 17.From the first paragraph, the person riding a bicycle in the city should take ________.

A.main roads B.streets D.highways D.sidewalks 18.Why do many people disagree that people should ride on roads?

A.Roads are for cars not for cyclists. B.People riding bicycles are considered inferior. C.People's riding on the road is against the law. D.People riding bicycles are not experienced.

19.The underlined phrase “cyclists' failure to keep up with the desired speed of motor traffic” in the second paragraph means ________.

A.cyclists' speed is beyond the limit

B.cyclists' speed is much lower than that of motorists' and they

easily get hurt

Throughout the world, bus travel is one of the cheapest ways to get around. Taking a bus from country to country or in between cities can be a budget-friendly way to travel, but there's a reason why bus travel isn't more popular. Unlike flying, bus travel is quite slow, and unlike train travel or renting a car and driving, buses can be uncomfortable, which is a reason that many people cite for not taking buses more often.

Those who have traveled long distances by bus will know that while on a bus, passengers are largely at the mercy of the bus driver. Airplanes are equipped with drinks and clean, usable restrooms, but bus travelers often don't have access to these luxuries. So, when nature calls, or if you run out of water and food or need to stretch your legs, you have to wait for the drivers to decide it's time for a break.

The infrequent nature of stops on long bus trips brings us to the most important thing to keep in mind when traveling by bus: think ahead and make preparations. Bring plenty of food and water on the bus with you, and restock your supplies each time the bus stops, even if you don't think you need to.

Watching where you sit is also necessary. If you're traveling alone, you may find yourself in a situation where you're elbow to elbow with a total stranger. Sometimes, it's possible to take measures to ensure you end up next to someone you can tolerate. If you're lucky enough to join the bus at a relatively uncrowded point on its route, you may be able to sit in an empty row. If you see that the bus is getting more populated, consider switching seats to sit next to someone who seems friendly. Many people bring pillows and blankets along on bus journeys, and this is really a good idea. Inflatable(膨胀的) pillows are a great item, because they take up hardly any room in a carry-on

5

bag when deflated, but can make your bus ride much more luxurious once you blow them up. Consider packing a few travel towels to use as blankets, which are small and portable and work school, in perhaps the most delicate phrase of all, says these claims are made by “no such people”.

To avoid complete lies, some job seekers claim that they well as blankets when you aren't using them to dry off. 16.It is known from the first paragraph that ________. A.it is the cheapest for people to travel by bus B.an increasing number of people hate taking buses C.all people don't like to take buses D.taking buses is the least comfortable

17.The purpose of the second paragraph is to ________. A.advise people not to take buses B.list some problems with taking buses C.show the advantages of airplanes over buses D.explain the reason why people should take buses

A.just carry some of your favorite food and enough water B.buy something necessary whenever the bus stops C.try to sit next to a tolerable person near the window D.always sit in an empty row with someone friendly

A.What should you watch out for while traveling by bus? B.Why should you choose to travel by bus? C.What are the disadvantages of taking buses?

You are busy filling out the application form for a position you really need; let's assume you once actually completed a couple of years of college work or even that you completed your degree. Isn't it tempting to lie just a little, to claim on the form that your diploma(毕业文凭) represents a Harvard degree or that you finished an extra couple of years back at State University? More and more people are turning to an utter deception(欺骗) like this to land their first jobs or to move ahead in their careers. For personnel officers, like most Americans, value degrees from famous schools. A job applicant may have a good education anyway, but he or she assumes that chances of being hired are better with a diploma from a well-known university.Registrars(注册主任) at most well-known colleges say that they deal with dishonest claims like these at the rate of about one per week.

Personnel officers do check up on degrees listed on application forms. If it turns out that an applicant is lying, most colleges are unwilling to accuse the applicant directly. One Ivy League school refers to them as “special cases”. One well-known West Coast

“attended” or “were associated with” a college or university. After careful checking, a personnel officer may discover that “attending” means being dismissed after one semester. It may be that “being associated with”a college means that the job seeker visited his younger brother for a football weekend. One school that keeps records of false claims says that the practice dates back at least to the turn of the century—that's when they began keeping records, anyhow.

If you don't want to lie or even stretch the truth, there are companies that will sell you a fake diploma. One company, with offices in New York and on the West Coast, will put your name on a diploma from any number of non-existent colleges. The price begins at around twenty dollars for a diploma from “Smoot State University”.The prices increase rapidly for a degree from the “University of Purdue”.As there is no Smoot State and the real school in Indiana is properly called Purdue University, the prices seem rather high for one sheet of paper. 20.The writer mainly wants to tell us that ________. Technology is changing our lives. Our present aerospace companies are gradually disappearing as private space concerns are being born every day. I'm going to discuss three space-based businesses that are sure to soon influence us all.

First we have to make space travel cheaply and safely. Engine design is the main challenge. To make money in space, the cost of space travel will have to diminish. This problem will be the most difficult to solve. Liquid fueled rockets are the only way to get out of Earth's orbit. Finding new ways to power the flight to space is also another big challenge.

Finding the key to cheap space travel might be the biggest story of our times. There are a lot of great minds working on this problem. And companies are pouring money into research and development. In the next few years we'll see the first sub-orbital tourist. And not long after that we should really start to see new and exciting things as competition heats up.

Spacecraft design and production will naturally follow rocket technology. All sorts of crafts will be needed for the wide uses they'll be tasked with. Several companies in the United States have already made small, low-cost test vehicles.

Resources in space will provide great mining profits to those who can afford the cost of setting up such a huge operation. Can you imagine finding a huge asteroid(小行星) of pure gold? The benefit to mankind is limitless. Mining on other planets, like Mars, also adds CO2 into the very thin atmosphere. Over time this can lead to the formation of an atmosphere similar to Earth's.

Space is going to offer us untold opportunity and wealth. But this is only going to occur if wealthy investors step forward and fund the first steps forward. It is certain that technology will take us to worlds we could never have imagined. 36.The passage is mainly about ________. A.the future of space travel

A class with hundreds of thousands of students might sound like a teacher's bad dream. But a big idea in higher education these days is the massive open online course, or MOOC. Some universities offer free, non-credit MOOCs available to anyone in the world. Others charge for courses and provide credits. The idea is still developing.

So far, most massive open online courses are in computer science, technology, mechanics and engineering. For example, students around the world are taking a free course called “Building a Computer Search Engine”. Two computer scientists, Sebastian Thrun and David Evans, are offering this course through udacity.com. Mr. Evans is an associate professor from Virginia University and Mr. Thrun is a Stanford research professor.

There are no education requirements for the course. The students watch short videos. And then they take informal quizzes after the videos each week for six weeks.

David Evans said, “Quizzes are part of the lecture to keep students busy and thinking, for students to be able to check that they understood what we covered. Those aren't graded and students try those as often as they want.”

They can repeatedly watch the videos and take the quizzes whenever they want.

Students receive homework. They join online groups to exchange questions and answers about the course.

The teachers hold virtual office hours to answer questions that the students have voted to send them. They also present their own questions and observations.

The students take a final examination to show where they rate in the class. Everyone who finishes the course receives a grade

Millions of women use cosmetics, often called “make-up”. The cosmetics industry is one of the biggest in the world. Most large stores sell cosmetics, and there are always shops at airports selling them cheaply.

The word “cosmetics” refers to anything that people put on their faces to make them look better. Lipstick, face powder and cream, and eye make-up are the most popular.

Although more women than men use cosmetics, there are cosmetics for men as well as women.

General 26. _______ Producing Main 23. ______ Definition Some people even have cosmetic surgery to make their faces look different. They have the shapes of their noses and eyes changed.

The most widely used cosmetic is probably lipstick, as many women who do not wear any other make-up will often put on a little lipstick.

Lipstick is made by mixing together different oils and colors. The mixture is then allowed to get hard and is cut into the shape of a small pencil. When a woman presses the lipstick to her lips, the end of it becomes soft, and some of it sticks to her lips, giving them extra color.

Cosmetics were probably first used in India, but it was the Egyptians, six thousand years ago, who made the most use of them. Rich Egyptian women painted their eyes green and black. They used a red color to paint pretty designs on their fingernails, the palms of their hands and the soles of their feet. Pictures of Cleopatra always show her wearing a lot of make-up.

The Romans also used cosmetics. They liked to make their skin very white and to paint their eyes. They also used a kind of lipstick.

In England at one time, very rich women had baths in milk to make their skin beautiful. They also used a lot of sweet-smelling powder to stop people smelling their bodies, which were often very dirty because they did not wash very often or change their clothes. On Monday, June 25, 2012, hundreds of people gathered outside the Library of Congress, in Washington D.C., to celebrate public libraries. For more than 100 years, libraries have played an important role in keeping Americans informed and educated. But how are these book-filled buildings changing with the times? You may be surprised to find out.

Benjamin Franklin famously set up America's first lending library in 1731 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. But the public library system got its biggest boost(推动) in the late 1800s. Businessman Andrew Carnegie donated millions of dollars to help build free public libraries across the country. Between 1886 and 1919, Carnegie's donations helped build 1,679 new libraries! Carnegie believed in the opportunities that libraries could offer Americans, young and old. He knew that the more libraries there were; the more people would have access to books, lectures, news and more. “There are now more public libraries in the United States than McDonalds restaurants,” said Clara Hayden of Baltimore's Enoch Pratt Free Library.

Chances are, there is a public library in or near your community. After all, the United States is home to 9,225 public libraries. Today, libraries continue to innovate(创新) and grow. Seven out of ten libraries offer free Internet access. This opens many doors

- 18 -

for community members who can not go online at home, including the opportunity to apply for jobs online.

Libraries are also teaching kids about the fun of reading. One new program called Read!Build!Play! combines reading with playtime. As kids listen to a book being read aloud, they use Legos(乐高玩具) to build images from the story. “Today's libraries are always looking for creative programming to bring people into the library,” said Lego's Michael McNally. Benjamin Franklin once said, “The doors of wisdom are never shut.” As long as the doors of public libraries are open, his statement is most certainly true!

36.Why does the writer want to start the text with the June 25 news?

A.To lead in the topic of the text. B.To show the importance of libraries.

C.To encourage readers to celebrate public libraries. D.To make readers interested in reading in libraries. 37.According to Paragraph 2, ________. Once upon a time, there lived a man who wanted to achieve everything he was capable of achieving. He was obsessed with this desire—he ate, slept, and walked with one and only dream: to die, having accomplished every single thing he was able to accomplish.

There were so many things he could do. He felt like the whole world could be his, __16__ he set his mind to it.

He knew that his __17__ had no limits. He knew that he could accumulate __18__ that would dwarf (使相形见绌) that of ancient kings; he knew that he could __19__ books that would shake the minds of generations; he knew that he could __20__ things that would forever change the lives of millions of people. He lived, constantly feeling the power within—and that power knew no bounds.

There was only one problem: having such a potential, but only one __21__, he had to make a choice. He had to decide where to __22__ all of his ability. Making that decision was extremely hard, for any __23__ meant cutting off some future achievements. In the meantime, he went to school, graduated, found a job, married, and __24__ children. And he spent every minute of his spare time trying to decide __25__ he should bring his potential into full play. Time went by, and he grew __26__. Some roads he used to dream about became closed to him. But there was still so much he could accomplish.

One day, a sudden chest pain made him come home early. He dragged his feet to the bathroom. There, feeling __27__, he looked in the mirror. A worn-out, gray-haired man stared back at him. He looked __28__ into these eyes and, all of a sudden, __29__ one simple truth. The next moment, the pain came again, and his heart stopped __30__forever. The truth that came upon him was rather simple: People only flatter themselves (自以为是,自鸣得意) by thinking that they could have __31__ this or that if not for such-and-such circumstances. Yet this is nothing but __32__. You simply lack something that is __33__ for achieving that goal you've never reached—a talent, a skill, willpower, __34__ something else. Late Sunday night, on August 5, 2012, cheers rang throughout NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) (美国宇航局喷射推进实验室), in Pasadena, CA. The team launched a high-tech robot, called Curiosity, into space, last year. On Sunday, after more than eight months of travel, Curiosity reached its destination: Mars. The mobile robot, or rover, landed in a crater(坑) near Mars's equator. Minutes later, it sent back to Earth a black-and-white picture of its own wheel on Mars soil. “We have landed in a nice flat spot,” said engineer Adam Steltzner, who led the landing team. “Beautiful, really beautiful!”

Curiosity had a particularly risky landing. Weighing about a ton, the car-sized rover is the heaviest Mars explorer yet. The previous three Mars rovers relied on giant airbags for a soft, safe landing. But Curiosity's weight made landing more complicated.NASA scientists planned a number of steps to slow down the spacecraft carrying Curiosity so it would not go crashing into Mars. As the craft neared the Red Planet, a giant parachute popped out(弹出), helping to slow down the landing. Later, powerful engines fired from the craft to slow it down some more.

Much to the relief of NASA scientists, Curiosity drove itself to a safe and gentle landing. “That rocked!” said Richard Cook, the mission's deputy project manager, shortly after the landing. “Seriously, wasn't that cool?”

This is NASA's seventh successful landing on Mars. Over its 98-week mission, Curiosity will search for the essential ingredients of life, including oxygen, and might find an answer to the question of whether or not Mars once sustained life.

Scientists decided against a safer landing on a plain and instead

chose to land in a crater, where water tends to gather. The crater is next to the Martian mountain Sharp, which is three times the size of Everest, the tallest mountain on Earth. “We're hoping to find materials that interacted with water,” said John Grotizenger, the mission project's scientist.

NASA scientists hope that Curiosity will make some big discoveries over the course of the mission. But for the moment, they are excited that their latest rover made it to Mars safely. JPL Director Charles Elachi compared his team of scientists to a team of Olympic athletes. “This team came back with gold,” he said. 36.The robot Curiosity was sent into space ________. Since the gene, called DAF 16 in worms, was found in many animals and in humans, the finding could open up new ways to affect aging, immunity(免疫) and resistance in humans, the scientists said.

“We wanted to find out how normal aging is being governed by genes and what effect these genes have on other traits, such as immunity,” said Robin May of the University of Birmingham, who led the study.

Populations across the world are aging at a surprising pace, bringing potentially big challenges for health and social care systems.A study by Danish scientists last year found that half of babies born in the rich world today will live to celebrate their 100th birthdays.Scientists are eager to find out how people age to try to develop drugs to help them stay healthier as their lives extend. “What we have found is that things like resistance and aging tend to go hand in hand,” May said in an interview.

May's team compared longevity, stress resistance and immunity in four related species of worm. They also looked for differences in the activity of DAF 16 in each of the four species, and found that they were all quite distinct.

May said DAF 16 was active in most cells in the body and was very similar to a group of human genes called FOXO genes, which scientists believe play a role in the aging process.

“The fact that subtle (微妙的) differences in DAF 16 between

species seem to have such an impact on aging and health is very interesting and may explain how differences in lifespan and related traits have arisen during evolution,” May said. 36.In which section may the text appear in a newspaper? A.Education. B.Science. C.Entertainment. D.Culture. 37.According to May, ________. A.resistance has a lot to do with aging B.FOXO genes can be found in worms C.genes play the same role in different species D.new drugs will change the genes in older people 38.What can we know from the third paragraph? A.New ways have been found to affect aging. B.Babies in the rich world will all live longer. C.Present social care systems are poorly managed. D.Aging populations are causing more challenges. 39.From the text we know that DAF 16________. A.is a gene that is only found in worms B.can make people live longer C.has an effect on aging and immunity D.has been quite familiar to scientists 40.What can be the best title of the passage? The total area covered by rainforests was once found to be 14% of the Earth's land surface. However, more than 50% of the original rainforest area is destroyed. At present, rainforests cover only 6% of the land area. Natural and human threats are responsible for this loss of rainforests. Some of the natural threats to rainforests are below:

One of the most destructive environmental threats to the rainforest is wildfire. Small fires destroy the ground covers and small plants. In the United States alone, rapidly spreading wildfire burns down more than 1 million acres of forest every year.

The rainforest vegetation requires water and other plant growth factors for their survival. Long dry often weakens the plants, making them susceptible_to diseases, pest and fire breakouts. Also typhoons and storms result in damage to the rainforest, which are beyond recovery.

Threats to the rainforest caused by human activities differ from natural threats. They cause complete damage to woodlands, in which case recovery is nearly impossible. In case of natural events, some parts of the forest ecosystem continue to work, which leads to slow recovery of lost habitats. Listed below are some human threats to the rainforest:

Every minute, thousands of forest trees are cut down for use in building houses and furniture. So a large number of ancient forests in the world have been destroyed. Also the rise in population is linked with increased need for foods, which in turn, is related to deforestation for agricultural practices.

Air pollution and water pollution are causing damage to every habitat, including the rainforest. You might have heard of acid rain, which when falls on leaves and plant parts, causes burning signs.

The need for bamboos and trees in paper industry is another

threat to the rainforest. Millions of plants are cut down to produce paper, so as to meet the growing demands of the public.

No doubt, some of the reasons for reducing rainforests cannot be avoided. But, there are many things every individual can do to help protect the rainforests, such as planting trees and reducing exploitation of forests. Introducing public awareness programs to educate people about the importance of this natural resource will surely help in conserving rainforests.

16.In Paragraph 1, the writer uses the decreasing percentage of rainforest cover to ________.

A.prove the environmental problem is more serious B.show more rainforests are in danger across the earth C.lead in the topic of threats to rainforests

D.remind readers of the importance of conserving rainforests 17.The underlined part “susceptible_to” in Paragraph 3 can be replaced by ________.

B.The damage caused by natural events to rainforests can recover completely.

C.Habitats of forests damaged by natural events can recover slowly.

D.Human activities cause fewer threats to rainforests than natural events.

请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。注意:每个空格只填1个单词。 In the past, American families tended to be quite large. It is common that parents raise five or more children. Over the years, the size of the family has decreased.

One reason for this is an increase in the cost of living. On average, children attend schools for more years than they used to, making them financially dependent on their families longer.

Conclusion 23.________ for the situation Moreover, children nowadays are better dressed and have more money to spend on entertainment. The parents usually take the responsibility for all the expenses. Meanwhile, families are less close than they used to be. More and more American mothers work away from home.

The break-up of the family occurs when the parents divorce. A lot of children in the U. S. live part of their young lives with only one parent. Broken families usually result in problems for children and parents alike. Children blame themselves when their parents separate. They grow up feeling unsettled as they are moved back and forth between parents. Usually one parent is responsible for raising the children. These single parents must care for the children's emotional and psychological needs while also supporting them financially. This is very demanding and leaves very little time for the parent's own personal interests. Single parents often marry other single parents. In this type of family, unrelated children are forced to develop brother or sister relationship.

The situations of many American families today are not good. However, recent signs indicate that things are getting better. The divorce rate is declining. The rate of childbirth is rising. Perhaps Americans have learned how important families are. SYDNEY—Australia's economic boom is encouraging a steady stream of unexpected visitors looking for work: Americans. US citizens are heading to Australia in small but growing numbers as near 10% unemployment at home drives more to look for jobs Down Under, where China's thirst for iron ore(矿石) and energy is transforming the Pacific nation into an economic powerhouse.

A bricklaying student from Silver Trowel, a leading provider of quality education and training in the building and construction industry, was apprenticed(当学徒) on a building project in Western Australia, where workers are in short supply.

Daniel Davila,a 23-year-old floorer from Camarillo, California made the 14-hour move across the Pacific two years ago. He had been forced to take a job stocking shelves at a local grocery store for $8.90 an hour when he couldn't get work fixing floors.

On a good day in Australia, he now makes as much as 50 Australian dollars( US $50.21 ) an hour—about twice the amount for a typical flooring job in the US. He plans to start his own

flooring business.

“I can make what I did in a week in the US in less than a day here”,said Mr. Davila, who lives near a mining boom town in Western Australia.

Australian government figures show just under 7,000 Americans currently work on long-term visas, an 80% jump over the past five years.US citizens are now the third-largest group applying for so-called 457 work visas, after British and Indian nationals. Americans with degrees in areas such as accounting or mine engineering, as well as other skilled workers, can obtain a nonrenewable(不可更新的) permit for as much as a three-year stay. After that, they can apply for the renewable 457, which allows up to a four-year stay.

The need for workers is particularly pressing in Western Australia. The mining state's unemployment rate was 4.5% in November, below the national average of 5.2%. Drivers of heavy trucks can pull in six-figure salaries while experienced crane(起重机) operators can earn hundreds of thousands a year. Attracting skilled workers is a shift for Australia, which historically sent many of its most highly educated to the US and Europe, according to migration data.

In fact, it is quite normal. For some people, though, loneliness can last for years. Now researchers say there are three different types of loneliness.

The first kind of loneliness is temporary. This is the most common type. It usually disappears quickly and does not require any special attention.

The second kind, situational loneliness, is a natural result of a particular situation — for example, family problem, the death of a loved one, or moving to a new place. Although this kind of loneliness can cause physical problems, such as headache and sleeplessness, it usually does not last for more than a year. The third kind of loneliness is the most severe. Unlike the second type, chronic (the opposite of “temporary”) loneliness usually lasts more than two years and has no specific cause. People who experience habitual loneliness have problems socializing. Unfortunately, many chronically lonely people think there is little or nothing they can do to improve their condition.

Psychologists agree that one important factor in loneliness is a person's social contacts, for example, friends, family members, coworkers, etc. We depend on various people for different reasons. Our families give us emotional support, our parents and teachers give us guidance, and our friends share similar interests and activities. However, psychologists have found that, though lonely

Two new studies show that children who live close to parks and markets that sell fresh food are half as likely to be obese as children who live far from these places. Obese people are extremely overweight, and those extra pounds are tied to an increase in a person's risk for many different diseases and serious medical conditions, including diabetes, heart disease and cancer. The research reveals “the influence of environmental factors on people's health, in particular obesity,” Laura Kettel Khan, a nutritionist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, told Science News.

Lawrence Frank, an urban planner and public health researcher at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, led one of the studies. Urban planners study the design of cities and work to build better places to live in. He and his colleagues looked at hundreds of neighborhoods in California's San Diego County and in Washington's King County, which includes Seattle.

They judged all the neighborhoods according to their nutrition and physical activity. The neighborhoods that scored highest on nutrition had a supermarket nearby that sold fresh produce and few fast food restaurants in the area. Neighborhoods that scored highest on physical activity had parks and were “walkable”, which means residents can walk to many places they'd want to go to.

The researchers then looked at health information from 681 children, ages 6 to 11, who lived in those areas. About 1 in 12 children who lived in neighborhoods near parks or supermarkets were obese. In neighborhoods lacking parks and markets, the obesity rate among children doubled, to about 1 in 6.

The work “will inform the way we think about cities and how to design neighborhoods,” Jennifer Black told Science News. Black, who didn't work on the new studies, is a nutritionist at the University of British Columbia. “We have a pretty strong

sense that if it's easier for people to safely and comfortably walk to the kinds of things they want, they'll be more likely to be physically active and spend less time driving,” she adds.

The researchers also found that newer neighborhoods scored lower than older neighborhoods, which suggests that some new housing developments may work against the health of the people who live there.

Many communities no longer provide parks and markets within walking distance, Frank told Science News. “If we want to reverse the obesity epidemic(流行病), we need to reverse the way we're building our communities.”

Today we will explain a very old saying that has had a big influence on rock-and-roll music. That saying is “A rolling stone gathers no moss”.It has several meanings. One meaning is that a person who never settles down in one place will not be successful. Another is that someone who is always moving, with no roots in one place, avoids responsibilities.

This proverb was said to be first used in the 1500s. But in the 1960s, the expression “rolling stone” became famous in the world of rock-and-roll music. It became the name of a song, a rock group and a magazine.

Experts say it all started with a song by the American singer and guitarist Muddy Waters. He was one of the country's top blues musicians until his death in 1983. His music influenced singers like Elvis Presley and Bob Dylan. In 1950, Muddy Waters recorded a song called “Rolling Stone”.

A British rock group is said to have taken its name from Muddy Waters' song. The Rolling Stones performed for the first time in 1962.The group's members called themselves “the world's greatest rock-and-roll band”.

In 1965, Bob Dylan released his song “Like a Rolling Stone”.It is one of his best known and most influential works.

It is an angry song about a woman who was once rich and successful. But now she is on her own,“with no direction home, like a complete unknown, like a rolling stone”.

In 1967, a young man named Jann Wenner started a magazine and he named it “Rolling Stone”.The magazine reported on rock music and the popular culture that the music created. By 1971,“Rolling Stone” had become the leading rock music and counterculture publication. It is still popular today. 21.Which person can be described as a rolling stone according to the proverb?

Babies work hard to get ready to talk. They listen attentively, and at around 6 months of age start to babble(含糊不清地说) with passion while their brains figure out how to make sounds understood by others. A new study suggests babies might also learn to gab by using their eyes.

“Babies start to lip-read when they learn to babble,” said David Lewkowicz, a psychologist who worked on the study. At that time, he says, infants probably connect the sound of a word to the shape of a person's mouth when saying the word.

Lewkowicz and Amy Hansen-Tift, both of Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, conducted the experiments demonstrating babies' lip-reading skills. The scientists studied 179 infants from families where English is the main language spoken at home.

The children, who were divided into groups by age, wore special devices while they watched videos of a woman speaking English or speaking Spanish, which was a foreign language to the babies. The device kept track of where the child looked while watching each video.

Babbling babies between ages 8 and 12 months old watched the speaker's lips during every video. Babies who could talk also watched the speaker's lips—but only while viewing Spanish videos. While watching the English videos, babies who could talk switched to watching the woman's eyes. The scientists say these findings suggest that babies who already use words can look away from a speaker's mouth and toward the eyes for additional, nonverbal(非语言的) communication clues.

The new study is useful for understanding how babies learn to speak, but it also might help researchers understand disorders like autism. Children with autism have a hard time communicating clearly and forming relationships with people. Previous studies have shown that children with autism watch people's mouths and avoid eye contact by the time they are 2 years old. The new experiments suggest that prolonged(长时期的) lip-reading in younger children, between 1 and 2 years old, may be an early sign of impending(将发生的) problems.

“It's too soon to know if a longer period of lip-reading might be connected to autism,” said Rhea Paul, who is a psychologist and autism researcher at Yale University. She says the new study demonstrates, however, that “it is normal for infants to
