Questions 1 to 5 are based on the same passage or dialog.

Once a year or so I give myself a day away. On the eve of my day of absence, I inform housemates, my family and close friends that I will not be reachable for 24 hours; then I shut off the cell phone. I sit for at least an hour in a very hot tub; then I lay out my clothes in preparation for my morning escape, and knowing that nothing will disturb me, I sleep the sleep of the just. In the morning I wake naturally, for I will have set no clock. I dress in comfortable shoes and casual clothes and leave my house going no place. If I am living in a city, I wander streets, window-shop, or gaze at buildings. I enter and leave public parks, libraries, and movie houses. I stay in no place for very long. Every person needs to take one day away, a day in which one consciously separates the past from the future. Jobs, family, employers, and friends can exist one day without any one of us, or perhaps they could exist forever in our absence. Each person deserves a day away in which no problems are confronted, no solutions searched for. Each of us needs to withdraw from the cares which will not withdraw from us. We need hours of aimless wandering or spaces of time sitting on park benches, observing the mysterious world of ants. If we step away for a time, we are not, as many may think and some will criticize, being irresponsible, but rather we are preparing ourselves to more skillfully perform our duties and to be more responsible. When I return home, I am always surprised to find some questions I sought to avoid had been answered in my absence.

A day away acts as a cup of hot coffee or tea since it can boost our energy and renew the spirit.

Questions 6 to 10 are based on the same passage or dialog.

For most of human history, people thought the world was flat. That is, they thought that if you travelled far enough in one direction, you would eventually come to the edge of the world. Then, about two thousand years ago, people started to come up with the theory that the earth was round. This meant that by traveling far enough in a straight line, you would eventually come back to where you started. It wasn't until the sixteenth century that Ferdinand Magellan's expedition became the first to travel around the world. The expedition first sailed west from Portugal, around South America, across the Pacific, before returning around South Africa back to Portugal. Although Magellan died during the voyage, one of his captains, Sebastian de Cano, made it all the way. In 1872, the French science fiction author Jules Verne published a book called Around the World in 80 Days. The novel was about a man who travels around the world, starting from London, to win a bet. In 1889, an American journalist, Nellie Bly, was sent by her newspaper to complete the journey taken by the characters in Verne's book. She traveled around the world, sending articles back to her newspaper about her journey. She finally arrived back home after her trip, taking 72 days, six hours, eleven minutes, and fourteen second to go around the world. Even though traveling around the world today is very easy, and can be done in one or two days by plane, people are still interested in breaking records. From 1970 to 1974, an American, Dave

Kunst, was the first person to walk around the world. He wore out twenty-one pairs of shoes on his trip! The first airplane flight around the world took place in 1924, completed by Lt. Lowell H. Smith and five other American pilots, and the first solo helicopter flight around the world was done by an Australian explorer, Dick Smith, in 1982-1983. As for a nonstop balloon flight all the way around the world, this wasn't completed until 2002, when Steve Fossett eventually succeeded after many attempts.

The Tour de France (环法自行车赛) is the most famous cycling race in the world. The race, which is held in July every year, consists of twenty one-day stages, plus several rest days. The course follows a clockwise route around France and often neighboring countries. The winner is the rider who completes all twenty stages of the race in the shortest overall time. The Tour de France first started on July 1, 1903, when sixty cyclists left outside of Paris and rode 467 kilometers to Lyon

(里昂). At that time there were no rest days – the winner was the rider who finished the race in the shortest total time. The winner of the first Tour de France received 2,000 francs (法郎). It took him 94 hours and 33 minutes to ride all 2,428 kilometers of the race, three hours faster than the runner-up. Over the weeks during which the race was run, the idea of the Tour de France slowly caught on with the people of France. The race has been held every year since that time, except during the years of World Wars I and II. The Tour de France has developed several special honors for which racers compete. The highest honor is the "yellow jersey (球衣)." Henri Desgranges, the founder of the race, introduced the yellow jersey in 1919 to show the leading racer each day of the Tour de France. Each day, the officials who keep track of all riders' times compare each rider's total time up to that point. The racer with the lowest overall time wears the yellow jersey during the following day's race. Other honors include the "green jersey," which is given to the best sprinter, and the "polka dot jersey," a white jersey with red dots, for the best rider in the mountains along the route. Over the years of the race, the competitors have gained a reputation for good sportsmanship. For example, if a lead rider falls off his bike, it is common for the following riders to slow down to allow the fallen rider to catch up. Some watchers are just surprised by this.

Questions 16 to 20 are based on the same passage or dialog.

Oil is essential for modern life. About 64 percent of the world's oil is located in the Middle East. The problem lies in getting the oil from the countries that produce it to the countries that consume it. This is mainly done using oil tankers. There are roughly 4,000 oil tankers in use today, and every day more than 100 million tons of oil is shipped. Usually this oil is shipped safely and with no problems, but occasionally there is a disaster. Every year millions of tons of oil are spilled into the ocean. This spilled oil can have terrible effects on ocean life, including the coastlines where the oil washes up onto shore. Some of the largest spills in history have been caused by oil tankers running into each other or by an oil tanker running onto the rocks in water. After these spills, officials try to discover who or what was at fault to help prevent similar accidents in the future. One of the worst oil spills in history occurred along the Alaskan coastline in 1989, when the tanker stuck on the coast of Alaska, spilling 42 million liters of oil. Although it wasn't the largest oil spill of all time, the disaster was terrible because it occurred in such a sensitive natural area. In this spill, the tanker's captain, who was tired from overwork and drinking alcohol, had gone to take a rest. He gave control of the ship to another sailor, who was unfamiliar with the route the ship was taking. Unfortunately, the ship ran onto a natural underwater rock wall near the Alaskan coast. Damaged by the rock, the ship leaked oil out into the ocean. More than 1,600 kilometers of coastline were affected by the oil spill. Some scientists who studied nature in the area estimate that 580,000 birds and 5,500 otters died as a result of the oil from the spill covering their skin. Smaller shellfish and other sea creatures living on the ocean floor were also affected, and these creatures were later eaten by seals, whales, and other animals.

16. What is the main concern talking about oil?

A. Most of the world's oil is located in the Middle East.

B. There are too many oil tankers being used today.

C. It is hard to send oil to the countries that consume it.

C. usually occur along the coastline

D. are cause by wildlife

18. Why did the sailor run onto the rock wall?

A. He was very tired.

Questions 21 to 25 are based on the same passage or dialog.

Diamonds! Even the word seems to shine. Diamonds have been fascinating people for centuries. Ancient people believed the stones had magical powers. Kings and queens have worn them to display power and wealth. Brides-to-be have received them as tokens of love for at least 500 years. Luck, power, wealth, love — people have sought these and more in diamonds. The first diamonds were discovered in India more than 2,000 years ago. Because of their hardness, diamonds could not be polished as easily as other gems (宝石). Ancient Indian rulers wore the unpolished stones. Some Indians carried knives with edges and tips of diamond. Indians also use tools made with diamonds to cut hard materials. Centuries later, people discovered that diamonds — and only diamonds — can cut other diamonds. They began shaping and polishing the gems by rubbing one diamond against another. The flat surfaces that resulted made the diamonds more shining than other stones. Hand polishing was slow, difficult work which could cause injury rubbing the hard stones against one another. Later, a flat, revolving disk coated with diamond dust was used. It was turned by hand. Today a polisher uses a similar piece of equipment turned by a machine. A boy in what is now South Africa made one of the most important diamond discoveries of all time. One day in 1867, Erasmus Jacobs, 15, was resting beside a river when he saw a shining stone. He took the stone home, and his mother later gave it away. The stone turned out to be a diamond nearly as large as a golf ball. It was the first recorded discovery of a diamond in Africa. That find started a diamond rush, which continues to the present. Today South Africa is a major diamond supplier. Africa and Russia now are the sources of most of the world's diamonds. When most of us think of diamonds, we think of the expensive gems in rings and necklaces. Diamonds are valuable because they are rare and beautiful. To obtain an ounce of diamonds, miners must move many tons of rock. Then the diamonds are sorted by size, shape, color and clarity. Only one out of five rough diamonds is cut into a gem.
