Weddings ceremonies in the United States vary as much as the people do. But many weddings, no matter where or how they are performed, include certain traditional customs. For instance, the bride and groom often exchange rings at the ceremony. The rings are usually worn on the fourth finger of the left hand, and are exchanged in the middle of the ceremony. Today, the ring shows the couple’s love for one another.

After the ceremony, the couple is often showered with handfuls of uncooked rice by friends and family. Rice, as we know, shows productivity and harvest. And then, there is often a party, where the food is so plentiful that it almost takes the attention away from the people. Soon the bride stands in the center of the room, often on a chair, and throws her flowers to the unmarried women at the party. Tradition says that whoever catches the flowers will be the next bride. Some women eagerly try to catch the flower; others shy away.

And then it is time for the bride and groom to set off the tradition of a honeymoon, a trip after the wedding. The trip nowadays varies greatly by wealth, time and preference. Sometimes the couple will spend a single night at a nearby hotel; or they may spend two weeks at a faraway foreign city as well. 1. According to the passage, _____________.

A. American wedding ceremonies are somewhat traditional B. American wedding ceremonies provide a lot of flowers C. American wedding ceremonies are preferable D. American wedding ceremonies are magnificent

Dream is a story that a person “watches” or even takes part in during sleep. Dream events are imaginary, but they are related to real experiences and needs in the dreamer’s life. They seem real while they are taking place. Some dreams are pleasant, others are annoying, and still others are frightening.

Everyone dreams, but some persons never recall dreaming. Others remember only a little about a dream they had just before awakening and nothing about earlier dreams. No one recalls all his dreams.

Dreams involve little logical thought. In most dreams, the dreamer cannot control what happens to him. The story may be confusing, and things happen that would not happen in real life. People see in most dreams, but they may also hear, smell, touch, and taste in their dreams. Most dreams occur in color, but persons who have been blind since birth do not see at all in dreams.

Dreams are a product of the sleeper’s mind. They include events and feelings that he has experienced. Most dreams are related to events of the day before the dream and strong wishes of the dreamer. Many minor incidents of the hours before sleep appear in dreams. Few events more than two days old turn up. Deep wishes or fears——especially those held since childhood——often appear in dreams, and many dreams fulfill such wishes. Events in the sleeper’s surrounding——a loud noise, for example, may become part of a dream, but they do not cause dreams.

Some dreams involve deep feelings that a person may not realize he has. Psychiatrists(精神病医生) often use material from a patient’s dreams to help the person understand himself better.

Dreaming may help maintain good learning ability, memory, and emotional adjustment. People who get plenty of sleep——but are awakened each time they begin to dream——become anxious and restless.

1. This passage is mainly about _________. A. why we dream during sleep B. how we dream during sleep C. what dreams are

D. what benefits dreams bring to people

2. According to the passage, dreams result from ______. A. the sleeper’s wishes B. the sleeper’s imagination C. the sleeper’s feeling D. the sleeper’s own mind

A. trying to help the dreamer recall his earlier dreams B. trying to make the sleeper dream logically C. studying the benefits of dreams D. helping the sleeper fulfill his dream

The fridge is considered a necessity. It has been so since the 1960s when packaged food first appeared with the label: “store in the refrigerator”.

In my fridgeless Fifties childhood, I was fed well and healthily. The milkman came daily, the grocer, the butcher, the baker, and the ice-cream man delivered two or three times a week. The Sunday meat would last until Wednesday and surplus(剩余的) bread and milk became all kinds of cakes. Nothing was wasted, and we were never troubled by rotten food. Thirty years on, food deliveries have ceased; fresh vegetables are almost unobtainable in the country.

The invention of the fridge contributed comparatively little to the art of food preservation. A vast way of well-tried techniques already existed — natural cooling, drying, smoking, salting, sugaring, bottling ...

What refrigeration did promote was marketing — marketing hardware and electricity, marketing soft drinks, marketing dead bodies of animals around the globe in search of a good price.

Consequently, most of the world’s fridges are to be found, not in the tropics where they might prove useful, but in the wealthy countries with mild temperatures where they are climatically almost unnecessary. Every winter, millions of fridges hum away(不断地嗡嗡作响) continuously, and at vast expense, busily maintain an artificially-cooled space inside and artificially-heated house — while outside, nature provides the desired temperature free of charge.

The fridge’s effect upon the environment has been evident, while its contribution to human happiness has been insignificant. If you don’t believe me, try it yourself, invest in a food cabinet(橱柜) and turn off your fridge next winter. You may miss the hamburgers, but at least you’ll get rid of that

On September 11, it seemed like New York and the people who lived there had changed forever. These days, however, it’s become obvious that, at least in one way, New Yorkers haven’t changed at all.

New Yorkers are famous for not agreeing on anything. Arguments, both good-natured and not, erupt(爆发) daily on everything from politics to food, world events to the price of vegetables. However, for a brief moment, a half-dozen architectural models managed to unite New York public opinion. The models were of proposed designs of buildings to replace the fallen World Trade Centre, and the overwhelming reaction was: “They stink” (糟透了).

Soon after the September 11 attack, the property’s owners had considered the idea of rebuilding the towers exactly as they had stood there. But critics pointed that the original designs were rather dull and their size made them impersonal and intimidating(令人畏惧的). Instead, they recommended a collection of smaller buildings including office space, retail stores and restaurants, and a memorial to the buildings and the people who died in them.

The public reaction to the models was almost completely negative, but that’s where the agreement

ended. Some thought the new designs were too big, while others felt they weren’t big enough. Some complained they were too impersonal and didn’t reflect the humanity of the people who had died, while others said they weren’t impressive enough. Some suggested a more modern exterior, while some said it was already too modern and should have a more traditional look. With these ongoing disagreements, it’s likely that the reconstruction will take longer than expected. 1. What is mainly discussed in this passage?

A. The debate on how to design buildings to replace the World Trade Centre is endless. B. Proposed models have been accepted after heated arguments.

C. New Yorkers are well known for debating daily on various kinds of issues. D. More people agree to rebuild the towers exactly as they had stood before. 2. What can we learn about New Yorkers according to this passage? A. New Yorkers are very impersonal.

B. New Yorkers have changed their life style after the September 11 attack. C. New Yorkers managed to unite public opinions.

D. New Yorkers like to argue with each other for everything.

3. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to this passage? A. Someone suggested that the new building should have a more traditional look. B. Someone suggested that the new building should include a memorial. C. People’s reaction to the models was positive. D. Some thought the new designs were too big.

4. The reconstruction will take longer time because _______. A. designers have not made models B. people have not reached an agreement

C. it is dangerous to construct high buildings in New York D. the property owners are afraid that companies will not move in 5. The word “exterior(Para.4)” is closest in meaning to _______. A. entrance B. design C. appearance D. materials 参考答案:ABCBC

A “typical” British family used to consist of mother, father, and two children, but in recent years there have been many changes in society. For example, since the law made it easier to get a divorce. This means that there are a lot of one-parent families. Society is now more tolerant than is used to be of unmarried people, unmarried couples and single parents.

Another change has been caused by the fact that people are living longer nowadays, and many old people live alone following the death of their parents. As a result of these changes in the pattern of people’s lives, there are many households which consist of only one parent or one parent and children.

You might think that marriage and the family are not so popular as they once were. However, the

心系天下求学人 5 专业 专注 周到 细致

majority of divorced people marry again, and they sometimes take responsibility for a second family.

Members of a family—grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins—keep in touch, but they see less of each other than they used to. This is because people often move away from their hometown to work, and so the family become scattered. Christmas is the traditional season for reunions. Although the family group is smaller nowadays than it used to be, relatives often travel many miles in order to spend the holiday together.

In general, each generation is keen to become independent of parents in establishing its own family unit, and this fact can lead to social as well as geographical differences within the larger family group. 6. This passage is mainly about ______.

A. changes in family life in Britain B. the British way of life C. one-parent families in Britain D. the high divorce rate in Britain 7. There are a lot of one-parent families in Britain because ______. A. one of the couples dies earlier B. people live longer than before

C. there are so many unmarried couples D. the number of divorce has gone up

8. What is the result of changes in British families? A. Families are smaller than before B. Family members are lonelier than before C. Families are not as popular as before

D. Family members don’t keep in touch with each other 9. Why does the author mention Christmas? A. Because it is a good time for traveling.

B. Because it is a chance for family members to get together. C. Because it is a traditional festival in Britain. D. Because it is the best time to get married.

10. What does the author mean by saying “geographical differences” in the last paragraph? A. The family members can hardly share anything common. B. The family members can see each other at Christmas. C. The family members live in different places. D. The family members keep on moving. 参考答案:ADABC

To understand how Americans think about things,it is necessary to understand “the point”. Americans mention it often:“Let’s get right to the point”,“My point is ... ”,“What’s the point of all this?”

The “point” is the idea or piece of information that Americans suppose is,or should be,at the

心系天下求学人 6 专业 专注 周到 细致

奥鹏远程教育中心助学服务部 http://www.open.com.cn

center of people’s thinking, writing, and spoken comments. Speakers and writers are supposed to “make their points clear”, meaning that they are supposed to write clearly the idea or piece of information they wish to express.

People from many other cultures have different ideas about “the point”. Africans traditionally tell stories that express the thoughts they have in mind, rather than stating “the point” clearly. Japanese traditionally speak indirectly, leaving the listener to figure out what the point is. Thus, while an American might say to a friend,“I don’t think that coat goes very well with the rest of your outfit”, a Japanese might say,“Maybe this other coat would look even better than the one you have on.” Americans value a person who “gets right to the point”. Japanese are likely to consider such a person insensitive if not rude.

The Chinese and Japanese languages are characterized by vagueness and ambiguity. The precision and directness Americans associate with “the point” cannot be achieved,at least not with any grace,in Chinese and Japanese. Speakers of those languages thus have to learn a new way of reasoning and expressing their ideas if they are going to communicate satisfactorily with Americans.

11. By “the point”,Americans mean_____. A. the idea or information in their mind B. the most important idea or information C. what they think, write and speak D. what they wish to express

12. Compared with people from many other cultures,Americans are_____. A. direct and honest B. clear and talkative C. impolite and rude D. traditional and silent 13. A typical American seems to be_____ to a typical Japanese. A. sensitive and rude B. insensitive but not rude C. sensitive instead of rude D. insensitive and even rude 14. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage? A. You are expected to state your idea clearly when speaking to an American. B. Telling stories to express their ideas is a traditional way of Africans. C. Japanese often imply their disapproval with polite words.

D. Chinese and Japanese languages are hard to understand because they are not clear. 15. A conclusion can be made that_____.

A. Americans and Africans cannot communicate satisfactorily B. Africans and Japanese cannot communicate satisfactorily

C. Misunderstanding may arise when Americans communicate with Chinese D. Chinese and Japanese will certainly get on well with each other 参考答案:BADDC
