第一节阅读下面三篇短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D),选出最佳选项。

A

For decades, it is generally believed that middle children-----those born in between older and younger siblings(兄弟姐妹)---tend to have a hard time growing up.

Within their families, middle children are said to be neglected. Their place in the birth order is seen as one of the disadvantages, since they do not receive the same attention that is given by their parents to their siblings.

Therefore, according to the long-established idea, they are likely to become shy, quiet and lacking in confidence. In this way, middle children are far more likely to become outside. And they are not so successful or happy as their brothers and sisters.

As we discovered during our research, however, the ideas do not fit the facts. Far from being thought of as failures, middle children are more likely than their siblings to be successful and enjoy strong social lives and successful careers.

The disadvantages they experienced in childhood turn out to be beneficial, in many cases giving them features of independence, creativity and ability to express themselves very clearly. Many famous people, such as the film star, Julia Roberts, are “middles.”

One of the most successful people of modern times, the Microsoft genius, Bill Gates, is also a middle. His remarkable ability to think outside the box and take proper risks are features often found in middle children.

And consider this: of all the US presidents since 1787, no fewer than 52 percent were middle children. This is not only a far higher proportion(比例)than the numbers in the overall population, but it also changes the traditional belief that the eldest sons always have the strongest personalities and therefore are natural-born leaders.
