The following are some of the most unique and fantastic celebrations from all around the world.

Songkran — Thailand

If you’re in Thailand between April 13th and 15th, get ready for the world’s biggest water fight. The celebration marks the beginning of the New Year, where cleansing with water is meant to purify and renew. In Bangkok or Chang Mai, the water fights can last up to six days. While this is the most popular activity, Songkran is also a time when people visit elders and monks to pay their respects to the New Year.

La Batalla del Vino — Haro, Spain

June 29th is a good day to visit Haro, Spain. Bring a bottle of red wine and prepare to be drenched(湿透)in red wine in the heart of Spain’s grape-growing region. After a church ceremony, a large number of people get gathered for the battle, where white shirts will be made bright purple by the end of the day.

Bay to Breakers — San Francisco, California

Created after the terrible 1906 earthquake as a way of encouraging people, the race has become one of the region’s most important events. Hosted every year on the third Sunday of May, the race runs approximately 12km through the city. The real highlight, however, is the thousands of people dressed up in a show. Wear whatever you want: Batman suits, purple wigs(假发)…

Koninginnedag — The Netherlands

Although their queen’s birthday is actually during the winter, she celebrates it on April 30 — the country’s official “Queen’s Day” since 1949. Orange is the national color, and the streets become a sea of shining wigs and body paints, as crowds gather in the squares. Amsterdam is the center of this outdoor party, but nearly every town is alive with orange on this day. 56. What can we learn about Bay to Breakers?

A. It is celebrated by people all over the United States. B. Its history can be traced back to hundreds of years ago. C. The most exciting part of the celebration is the 12km race. D. It was designed to lift people’s spirits after a terrible disaster. 57. Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A. Haro in Spain is probably most famous for its wine industry. B. Koninginnedag is celebrated only in the capital of the Netherlands. C. People should wear formal clothes when enjoying Bay to Breakers. D. Tourists can enjoy water fights in the hottest time of a year in Thailand.

Is it possible that there are basic myths and lies that are ruining your life, holding back your career or justifying an unhappy or unfulfilled life?

The little things we believe or tell ourselves can go a long way toward affecting our success. Here’s what Greg MrKeown, author and Young Global Leader at World Economic Forum, had to say.

Why do capable people fail to break through to the next level? It’s a question McKeown began pursuing an answer to when he quit law school 15 years ago. “The answer to the question, to my great surprise, is success,” he wrote in his post 12 Myths that Lead to a Busy, Unfulfilling Life.

“The success bred options and opportunities which undermined(逐渐削弱) the very focus that led to success in the first place. In other words, I found that success can be a catalyst(催化剂)for failure.,” Mckeown wrote. What often happens, he said, is that successful people get disturbed by small things.

He pointed to 12 big myths that can lead to a stressful, unsatisfying career and life. Two of them are:

If everyone is doing it then I need to do it. Let the fear of missing out consume you. Buy into the cultural belief that glorifies being busy and checking social media and email constantly. Don’t pay attention to the quiet voice telling you a different life is possible. Just go with the crowd. The truth: There is a joy in missing out. Discover it.

I’ll stay up late and get it done. If you ever mention sleep to someone, remember to talk about how little you’ve had lately. Boast about getting five hours last night, or about how you pulled an all-nighter earlier this week. It’s okay to be tired and to admit it. But don’t show weakness, or worse, laziness by suggesting you need an eight-hour sleep. The truth: Sleep is for high performers.

The overarching(影响一切的)lesson is simple. “When organizing your life, there are only two choices: The disciplined pursuit of the essential or the undisciplined pursuit of the nonessential,” Mckeown wrote. “And that matters because if you don’t control your life, someone else will.”

58. After quitting law school, Greg McKeown has been focusing on __________.

A. why many people give up their dreams B. why capable people can’t achieve success C. what the secrets of many people’s success are D. what stops people from winning greater success

59. Why can success be a catalyst for failure according to Greg McKeown?

A. Because successful people tend to be proud. B. Because successful people tend to avoid work.

C. Because success can prevent people concentrating. D. Because success may bring people more challenges. 60. Greg McKeown may agree that __________.

A. people should follow their own course B. people should follow the trend to succeed C. enough sleep can guarantee people’s success

D. successful people focus more on social communication 61. The passage is mainly about __________.

A. factors contributing to failure C. ways to achieve greater success

C

I believe that if more people were like dogs, we’d all be a whole lot happier. My dogs make me a better wife, mom and daughter just by being themselves. They don’t care about what color I am, or whom I love, or any of the other ridiculous things that separate us as people. They only care that I am kind to them and others. That’s what should matter. My dogs also know that giving and receiving affection are the most important things in life. Yes, eating is right up there, too. But I believe that if my dogs had to choose between lying still in a patch of sunshine while I sat beside them on the grass giving their bellies a good rub(摩擦)or eating a meal of the dog food they get every single day of their lives, I truly believe they’d choose the former.

When they offer themselves up to receive adulation(恭维), they cause me to become still, to remember that most things actually can wait a few more minutes to get done because this moment right here, this moment of sitting beneath the trees with their swaying limbs (四肢), the sun warm on my face, the scent of the stream down in the woods, the birdcall in the deepest parts of those woods, this moment is what life is about.

Having a dog, or any pet, makes us better people. They force us to slow down (each time I return home I have to spend a few minutes patting the belly of our outside dog, Rufus, because he’ll lie down on the driveway on his back, right in my way as I’m rushing to the door; I can’t refuse that and I often fold myself down onto the ground with grocery bags standing all around us to give him some loving), to pay more attention, to be kinder (especially to Pepper, who came from an abusive household before ours, and carries all of that grief in his eyes, in his damaged back), to give and receive affection, to be patient (especially on days when Holly just doesn’t really feel like going to the bathroom anytime quick), to love and love and love. Writers aren’t supposed to throw that word around much. We’re supposed to be stingy with putting that on the page. But it is necessary when talking about dogs because that’s what they embody(体现). They remind us, time and time again, of the most important thing. Such a shame that we actually forget that. But we do.

B. myths influencing further success D. suggestions on pursuing the essential

I know that some people think it is nonsense to think an animal has a soul. I don’t care what anyone says or thinks. But I do believe dogs have souls. I believe a great amount of being is required to hear the thunder from way off, or to feel the trembling of a train miles, or to know when someone they care about needs them, and offer comfort no matter what , and not have one tiny bit of judgment in their whole beings. Dogs know these things. Dogs make us better people. That’s what I believe.

62. The underlined word “stingy” in Paragraph 3 probably means “__________”.

A. mean

B. patient

C. happy

D. connected

63. Which word can best describe the author’s attitude towards dogs?

A. Desperate.

B. Grateful.

C. Tolerant.

D. Cautious.

64. We can get the following information from the passage EXCEPT that __________.

A. the author has at least three dogs

B. Pepper was mistreated by its previous owner C. the author often goes to the grocery store with Rufus D. the author understands the meaning of life thanks to her dogs. 65. What does the last paragraph convey to us?

A. Only noble people deserve the affection from dogs. B. Dogs are a better helper than humans in some cases. C. Dogs are ready to relieve their owners’ pain no matter what. D. Why dogs can do things beyond humans’ ability is still a mystery.

Role-playing in Child Development

Playing is a key component in the learning process for all children. There are various ways in which children play, but one of the most important is role-playing. This involves a child engaging in an activity during which he or she pretends to be another person.

Experts on child development believe that role-playing can increase the connections in children’s brains that help them learn. Language skills are some of the most important aspects of learning. When children role-play, they must work out steps that need to be taken to complete a task, and create plans to act out a story. These activities enable children to develop their oral language skills. They become able to organize others and to give directions.

Children’s social skills can also be developed. When engaged in group activities, children have different roles. Some are leaders while others are followers. At times, the children will disagree, so they must learn to negotiate and compromise with one another, and they must learn to

apologize when they have strong arguments or disagreements as well. Children further learn about cooperation and sharing and, hopefully, begin to understand things, trying to be in others’ shoes. Besides helping children learn some kinds of skills, role-playing fosters(培养)children’s imaginations and can therefore assume a number of forms. For example, boys may pretend to shave like their fathers or perform various tasks around their homes. Girls, meanwhile, often pretend to be mothers to do some daily tasks, particularly if it involves caring for young babies. Sometimes children may imagine belonging to a group of superheroes or imitate(模仿)real-life situations. They might dress up and assume different roles. Another example is the performing of stories they read in books, which is also very common when they role-play. Another beneficial aspect of role-playing is that it can help children deal with certain actions that may cause them emotional pain, such as the fear they face when going to school for the first time or making a visit to the doctor. If children role-play situations like these beforehand, the first that they experience when doing these actions lessons them frequently in reality. For this reason, experts encourage parents to allow their children to role-play and even to take part in these activities to help their children master their fears. Role-playing can benefit children in many ways. There is no activity for which young children are better prepared than fantasy play. Nothing is more dependable and risk-free, and the dangers are only pretend.
