Being the boss might mean more money and challenging work but it can also cause damage to physical and mental well-being, according to a Canadian study.

For years studies have shown people in lower-status jobs generally have higher rates of heart disease and other illnesses and die earlier than those in higher-status positions while job authority has shown no relationship with workers? health.

But University of Toronto researchers, using data from 1,800 US workers, found the health of people in higher positions is affected by work as they are more likely to report conflicts with co-workers and say work disturbs their home life.

However, the positive aspects of having a power position at work, such as higher status, more pay and greater independence, seemed to cancel out the negative aspects when it came to people?s physical and psychological health.

These latest findings, reported in the journal Social Science & Medicine, suggest that the advantages and disadvantages authority positions basically cancel each other out, giving the general impression that job authority has no health effects.

For the study, the researchers surveyed participants about various aspects of their work, life and well-being. Job authority was judged based on whether a person managed other employees and had power over hiring, firing and pay.

Physical health complaints included problems like headaches, body aches, heartburn and tiredness. Psychological complaints included sleep problems, difficulty concentrating and feelings of sadness, worry and anxiety.

“This isn?t to suggest that having authority is ?bad?—in fact, we show it has benefits ... but it is important to identify the negative sides and deal with them.” researcher Scott Schieman said. Schieman said conflicts with co-workers or involvement of work into home life may destroy at physical and mental well-being by creating stress.

“These are key stressors that can tax individuals? ability to function effectively,” Schieman said.

The following passage is a healthy prescription (处方) of how we can approach life. It is not about being famous or being wealthy or about our good looks. Truly, it is all about love. There are times when we feel as if we are separated from the rest. This feeling creates a mental prison. Therefore, we should try to work hard to internally (内在地) liberate ourselves by widening our circle of pity to accept all living things.

“Open your heart to others and try to understand,

When someone reaches for you, hold out to them your hand, Follow your heart, no matter what other people say,

Do things that make you able to smile throughout your day, Treat other people, the way you would like them to treat you, Do what you know is right and to your heart and self stay true,

Remember what life is all about, it is how you make people feel, What you do, where you go, and making dreams become real, Helping people through, in hard times of pain and strife, What you do for others, is what is important in this life.

Look deeper and don’t judge people by what is on the outside, It is what is inside that counts and what people often hide, Care, help, love, be honest, and be kind,

With purity and goodness within yourself, it is happiness you will find.

Do all you can in the time you have, you won’t always be around, Recapture the joy of little things, that once were easily found, And if you can do all this and live a life of love,

Shaping the Future of TV

Nobody can predict the future of TV with any certainty but some major figures in the industry have recently put forward their thoughts on what will shape TV of the future.

The shaping of a personalized television future is starting to take place, says Intel. The chip giant, who makes the processors found in most personal computers, states that by 2015 there will be just over 12 million devices using IPTV services that will be capable of connecting to over 500 billion hours of TV & video.

This supports the idea to make television a more social, personalized and readily accessible device available anywhere through IPTV services. As more and more people consume TV & video through various mediums, there is now a greater need to distribute and manage this content. As such, companies like TV Genius are accepting this announcement made at Intel?s Developer Forum (IDF) in the USA by their chief technology officer, Justin Rattner.

With such a variety of content likely to become available, technology firms will need to assist in making personalized TV recommendations more readily accessible.

Mr. Rattner, speaking to the BBC said, “TV will remain at the centre of our lives and you will be able to watch what you want and where you want. We are talking about more than one TV-capable device for every man and woman on the planet. People are going to feel connected to the screen in ways they haven?t in the past.”

One way in which this will happen will also be assisted by a more united service of material combining including video content, internet content, broadcast content, and personal content.

This content will become much more accessible through remote devices like mobile phones using IPTV technology. This means that users will be able to watch their favorite programs away from the traditional media hub, the home.

It had been a long time since I had been to Jacksonville, Florida. I had driven to town hoping to see the old barber shop where my hair had been cut as a child.

I parked my truck and decided to try and locate a telephone to see if the Florida Barber College had moved to a new location.

After walking about a block I saw an open shoe store. I walked inside and asked if I could use their telephone book. Unable to find a listing for the Barber College, I picked out the number of a local beauty salon, hoping they might tell me if the barber college was still in business. The number was busy, so I decided to wait and try again in a few minutes.

As the salesman and I stood talking the front door opened and a young man about twenty came into the store pushing himself in a wheelchair. “I need a new pair of shoes,” said the customer. As he turned the corner, there was a blanket across his lap. I was shocked to see that the young man had no legs.

“A gift for a friend?” I asked the boy. “No,” he replied. They are for me,” he continued, with a smile on his face. I just smiled back and watched to see what would happen next.

“What type of shoe would you like?” asked the clerk. “How about a pair of cowboy boots?” The man pointed to the back wall where three or four pairs of boots were displayed. The salesman, sharply turning, headed off to the backroom.

“Isn?t this fun?” the boy asked me. I moved my hand to let him know that I did not understand his question. “When I was a kid, my parents used to buy me a new pair of shoes every year. That was such a wonderful feeling. Something I have never forgotten. The smell of the leather and the pride I felt when I walked around the store showing off my new shoes.”

The salesman came walking down the aisle with a large box. He sat it down on the floor, took out one boot and handed it to the young man. The boy closed his eyes. He placed the boot against his nose, and drew in a large breath. I did not know what to say as tears began to fall on the young man?s cheeks. “What type of accident did you have?” I asked him. “Farm accident,” he said, as he tried to clear his voice.

“I see buying a new pair of shoes still gives you that good feeling you talked about,” I told the young man, as I smiled.

“Yes it does.” he said “And I may have someone, and his feet to share it with some day.” 67. Why did the young man want to buy a new pair of shoes?

A. Because he bought a pair every year.

B. Because he wanted to send a new pair to a friend. C. Because he hoped to keep it for memory.

D. Because he enjoyed the feeling of possessing a new pair.

68. The author writes about the barber shop at the beginning of the article in order to _______. A. introduce the background of the story B. see if the Barber College had moved to a new location C. find a listing for the Barber College

D. pick out a local beauty salon

69. How did the author feel when he saw a young man without legs buying a pair of shoes? A. Unexpected. B. Proud. C. Sympathetic. D. Superior. 70. What can you conclude from the passage? A. The young man was a stubborn person. B. The author was a man of understanding. C. The cowboy boots were fashionable then. D. The disabled envied much those healthy.

第四部分 任务型阅读 (共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)

请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入最恰当的单词。 注意:每空格1个单词。

When Carla Fisher and her husband announced plans to travel the globe with their young daughters for a year, some friends called them crazy.

Seven years later, with wonderful memories and a book documenting their world travel, the Fishers now seem like global trailblazers (先驱者).

“It?s really encouraging to hear that many other people want to educate their kids in that manner,” said Fisher.

Some parents are trying to raise knowledgeable and open-minded “world citizens”. Others want to give their children the skills they?ll need to compete globally.

“There is a huge amount of interest in spending time abroad at all stages of life and increasingly, as a family with children,” said Maya Frost, author of “The New Global Student…”. She knows American families in every corner of the globe who have made that choice.

“There?s so much more to education than school,” said Tessa Hill, who recently returned to her Houston-area home, after driving her family across North and Central America and Europe in a motor home for 13 months. “World travel is an education in people, cultures, language, travel skills, street smarts and in how lucky we are to live in the United States.”

When Hill and her husband began considering extended global travel, their middle child, Charles, 13, was surprised. “My first reaction was ?well, are we really going to do this??” Charles

said. “But it did sound like great fun.”

Charles said missing his friends was the hardest part. He stayed in touch via e-mail and made some new friends along the way, playing soccer with kids in France and learning about rugby from youths in Ireland.

“I?d definitely recommend this to other kids,” Charles said. “It was such a great opportunity to see different countries and learn geography a different way.”

To make re-entry smoother, most school officials prefer that families work out an educational plan before they leave town.

“It sounds out-of-date, but it really opens up your mind and your eyes to the world,” said Robbin Goodman, 17, a senior student who spent his junior year skateboarding across Beijing, China, when he wasn?t studying Chinese history and other core subjects.

Had he not already taken a school-sponsored spring break trip with his mom to China in 2007, Robbin said he probably would not have been able to convince his parents to let him go alone for a year. “I knew I would learn Chinese and all that, but my goal was to have a great time,” Robbin said.

“The biggest problem for those seriously considering going abroad is dealing with those who are against the idea,” said Frost.

“They gain the ability to take risks and to have confidence in themselves,” said Liz Pearlstein, founder of a global education consulting firm. “When we came home from London, my daughter, who had been painfully shy before we left, said ?Mom, now I know there?s nothing I can?t do.?”

No one knows exactly how many American families are choosing the global education path, but global education consultants say a growing number of parents are traveling for a year or more with their children. Indeed, the importance of reading can never be too much stressed. First of all, reading, especially out-of-class reading, enriches our mind and broadens our horizon. People say that books are the crystal of human wisdom. Through reading, we learn what cannot be learnt in our classrooms. Besides, reading is also a way of relaxation. It is so refreshing to read a story before going to bed, or after a day of study.

W: Hi, John. You must have enjoyed using your new camera on your trip.

M: I would have, but I left it in the car of my friend who drove me to the airport. W: What a pity!

Text 2

W: You know I really can?t stand the way Paul controls the conversation all the time. If he?s going to be at the New Year?s party, I just won?t come.

M: I?m sorry you feel that way, but my father insists that he should come. Text 3

M: Will you do anything exciting this summer, Sandy?

W: Most likely. My daughter and I have planned to rent a beach house in Florida for two weeks. M: That?s great! Text 4

W: Mary Green is really unlucky. You see, so many terrible things keep happening to her. M: Yes, if you can trust what she says. But most of her stories are pretty unbelievable in my opinion. Text 5

M: So, how was it?

W: I?m not sure.

M: What do you mean by saying not sure?

W: Well, I didn?t see most of it. Whenever the monster appeared, I closed my eyes. Are you going to see it? M: Oh, I don?t think so. I don?t like scary movies.

M: My watch always gains ten minutes a day.

W: That?s funny. My watch always loses ten minutes a day.

M: No kidding?

W: I?m serious. Every morning I set my watch by the radio, but it still loses ten minutes. M: You know what you can do?

W: Throw it away and buy a new one?

M: No. You only need to put your watch ahead ten minutes every day. W: So you put your watch back ten minutes each day? M: Yeah, that?s what I?m doing.

W: Oh, it takes too much trouble. Just buy a new watch. It doesn?t cost much. Besides, I just can?t put up with this thing any more.

M: Excuse me, may I ask you some questions?

W: Sure, Sir.

M: Do you know when the accident happened?

W: You know the street is very long. It was about 8:30 when I turned into the street and followed the black car. About 10 minutes later, I had to stop my car because of the accident. M: What?s the cause?

W: When I was driving my car along the road, I saw a black dog crossing the road. Unluckily, a white car was driving fast towards the dog in the other direction. So the two cars crashed in order to escape running over the dog. M: And then?

W: After that, I called the hospital immediately. About five minutes later an ambulance came and took the injured driver away, the one driving the black car. M: OK. Thank you.

W: Great to hear you are coming. How long are you planning to stay over here?

M: I?ve got three weeks altogether. What do you suggest I see?

W: Well, I suggest you see some of our national parks. You?ve got lots of old buildings in your country. Ours is a fairly new country, so our cities and towns are modern. But I guess we?ve got some of the most beautiful mountains and countryside in the world. Why don?t you hire a car and drive around for a couple of days?

M: Is it expensive to hire a car?

W: No, not very. Why not take a friend with you? Then you can share the cost of the gas and the car.

M: Oh, that sounds like a good idea. I have a few friends and I could ring to see if they?re free. Thank you very much. W: My pleasure.

W: Haven?t seen you for a long time, Patrick. How have you been?

M: OK, except I?ve been looking for a job for days, and I haven?t found one yet. It?s so hard finding work these days. Have you had any luck? W: Yes. I?ve got a job, a waiter?s job in a restaurant. M: Are you well paid?

W: Well, $ 8 an hour, but I can keep the tips. That comes to roughly $ 64 an evening. M: Not bad.

W: Actually, there?s still another opening. If you?re interested, you?ll surely get it. M: That?s great! I?ll go there right now and speak with the boss. W: There?s no rush. You can see him tomorrow. I?ll tell him about you. M: Thanks a lot.

W: Think nothing of it, man. I?m sure you?d do the same for me.

M: Could you tell me a bit more about the work there? I mean, those dos and don?ts, I?m green horn, you know. W: First of all, you must be punctual. You should be there before 5 p.m., so that you will have half

an hour for preparation, such as changing clothes and things like that. Then remember you should smile. Smile to your customers all the time. Never put on a long face even if you feel awful that day. Anything else? Oh, yes. Never argue with your boss. Learn to say “Yes, Sir.” M: Be a yes-man, you mean?

W: You may put it that way if you like. Don?t worry. You?ll have no problem.

Today, we?ll look at another problem that is troubling British society. It seems that young people in Britain today are losing the ability to communicate clearly and accurately in Standard English, and the British government is so concerned that it has set up a committee to “promote the better use of English”. However, do British young people really have a problem in expressing themselves? A study published last October suggests that there is a real cause for concern: it showed that among the UK?s 15-year-olds, only 22 percent of boys and 28 percent of girls feel comfortable using Standard English in formal situations, such as at school and in interviews. Some people think that British pupils leaving school are not as good at using languages as pupils from other countries, partly because they don?t spend much time talking in class. There is some reason for being concerned about the levels of fluency and willingness to speak in public, even if “public” just means in front of the rest of the class. The government committee is made up of people from the world of business, education, sports, the arts and the media. It will be chaired by the news announcer, Trevor McDonald. He is a widely respected and popular figure.
