The recent heavy rain, floods and landslides in southern China that have led to the deaths of many people and caused great damage may have also claimed the life of a wild giant panda that was found dead in Yingxiu township,Wenchuan county,Southwest China’s Sichuan province,on Tuesday afternoon.

An examination by veterinarians(兽医) from the Wolong Nature Reserve in the county did not find any obvious wounds on the male panda that was likely around 10,but found a considerable amount of water in the animal’s lungs. The results of the examination and the circumstances of the panda’s discovery have ruled out the possibility that humans had killed the animal.People suppose that it drowned in the recent rainstorms and was washed out of its habitat into the Yingxiu section of the Minjiang River,a

1

tributary of the Yangtze River.Vets believe the panda had been dead for two or three days when it was found in Zipingpu Reservoir.

The animal was found by a villager from Yingxiu who was checking his cornfields on Tuesday afternoon.Recent rainstorms and mudslides have wreaked havoc(灾难) in many of Sichuan’s nature reserves, damaging vegetation and infrastructure(基础设施) in both the Wolong and Anzihe reserves. The government has promised to patrol sites affected by mudslides and offer timely help to wild animals, including pandas.

According to the State Forestry Administration, about 1,600 pandas live in the wild worldwide. The rainstorms and mudslides have taken their toll on humans. In Sichuan,29,000 households have been without power since Monday as a result of heavy rain that hit Wangcang county, says a county government spokesman.

The weather has damaged all 20 schools in the county and 130 square metres of school buildings have completely fallen down while another 9,560 square metres are in danger of falling down,he says.

1.The underlined word in the third paragraph probably means“________”. A.check C.damage

B.visit D.found

2.We can infer from the passage that________. A.the dead panda was found by accident B.the panda died in its own habitat

C.altogether 9,690 square metres of school areas fell down D.the panda was badly hurt when found

3.Where can we most probably read this text?

2

A.In a short novel. B.In a students’ book. C.In a life column. D.In a news report.

4.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A.People suppose humans killed the panda. B.The panda died on Tuesday afternoon. C.About 1,600 pandas live in Sichuan. D.The bad weather caused great damage.

Endangered mountain gorillas(大猩猩) are close biological cousins to humans.Over the past decade, people have made more efforts to help their fellow primates. And now,the results are proving to be positive.According to new information given by the Uganda Wildlife Authority and the World Wild Fund for Nature(WWF),the total world population of mountain gorillas has risen in the last two years. While mountain gorillas remain an endangered species, this increase is largely due to the actions of conservationists(保护工作者).“Mountain gorillas are the only great ape experiencing a population increase,”said David Greer, the WWF’s African Great Ape Program Manager.“This is largely due to strong conservation efforts and successful community work.”

Strength in Numbers

In 2000,the total population of mountain gorillas was only 320.The low number was a result of illegal hunting, habitat loss, and disease.Since then, the number has risen, but slowly.

3

Mountain gorillas live in Rwanda,Uganda, and Democratic Republic of Congo—all countries in central Africa. To ensure more protection and care, nearly half of the existing population lives in a national park.Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, located in the northern part of Rwanda,is home to 400 mountain gorillas. They have formed 36 social groups and are led by 16 male gorillas.Ten of these groups have become used to human’s research and tourism.

Family Ties

Mountain gorillas are highly social creatures that live in a community environment.Typically, mountain gorillas live in a group of about 30 individuals. The leader is an older male who organises the group for hunting and nesting. This male can weigh up to 500 pounds and stand nearly 6 feet tall.Often he will have silver hair on his back, marking his senior age and dominance(优势) within the group.Like any community, gorillas depend on one another. Now,they are depending on humans to help keep them alive.

5.The number of mountain gorillas is increasing mainly because of________. A.fewer and fewer forests being cut by people B.the strict laws for hunting C.constantly changeable habitats D.the efforts of conservationists

根据第一段倒数第三句“...this increase is largely due to the actions of conservationists(保护工作者).”

6.Now mountain gorillas mainly live________. A.on the bare mountains B.in a national park C.in some personal homes D.in some forests

根据小标题Strength in Numbers下的“To ensure more protection and care, nearly half of the existing population lives in a national park.”

7. We can infer from the last paragraph that________.

A.individual mountain gorillas can live without depending on others B.the young male mountain gorillas are in charge of the organisation

C.the weight and height are very important for the male leader of mountain gorillas D.the grey hair on the head of the leader stands for his senior age

根据小标题Family Ties下的第一句“Mountain gorillas are highly social creatures that live in a community environment.”可知A项错误;根据“The leader is an older male who organises...”可知B项错误;根据“...silver hair on his back, marking his senior age...”可知D项错误;根据“This male can weigh up to 500 pounds and stand nearly 6 feet tall.”

8.What’s the purpose of the passage?

A.To introduce the lifestyle of mountain gorillas.

B.To tell the relationship between mountain gorillas and humans. C.To call on us human beings to help protect mountain gorillas. D.To warn us the extinction of mountain gorillas.

根据第一段倒数第二句“Mountain gorillas are the only great ape experiencing a population increase...”和下文“This is largely due to strong conservation efforts and successful community work.”以及文章最后一句总结“...they are depending on humans to help keep them alive.”
