In 2000, when I was around seven years old, my parents, sister, brother, and I were coming back from a picnic. That was our usual weekend adventure, but unlike every other weekend, a surprise was waiting for us in our driveway. There, we saw two adult geese (鹅) and a young goose. The adults were surprised by our return and flew away, but their baby was still too young to fly and couldn’t follow. We are no strangers to the ways of wildlife, so we knew to avoid physical contact with the young goose out of fear that it would stay with us and be lost to its family forever.

Hours passed, and night fell. With it came the coldness. The tiny little thing was walking around our yard and it was clear that the goose needed protection and warmth. At that point, we knew we had to help, аnd wе brоught h?m ?ntо оur bасk роrсh (门廊).

We all pretty much slept with one eye open till morning came. And then another morning. And still another. Each morning, we would try to shoo (赶走) the goose to his parents, who kept coming back to our yard. He wouldn’t go to them, though, and they wouldn’t come close enough to take him. We kept this up for five days, but no luck. By then, the young goose had clearly decided we were his new family, so we had to give him a name. My sister Joanna called him Peeper, because he would follow us around the yard making a peeping noise, nonstop. We also decided that Peeper was a boy. I don’t know why; it just felt right.

Days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months until almost a year passed. Peeper slept in our back porch each night. My dad would clean all the goose droppings daily. He would throw Peeper up into the air so he could fly a loop (圈) around the house, coming back again once the porch was clean.

Paragraph 1:

One evening, my dad threw Peeper up in the air as usual, but this time, Peeper just flew off.

Paragraph 2:

It came as a total shock to me when, in 2019, an aging adult goose made his way back to my family home.

One evening, my dad threw Peeper up in the air as usual, but this time, Peeper just flew off. Everyone was very, very sad. It was dark, and we were worried. We looked for him for days, calling his name, but he didn’t come back. We hoped he went off on his natural way. Again, days turned into weeks and weeks turned into months, then years. I missed Peeper. I would call for him every time I saw a group of geese fly by in V-formation. Eighteen years passed, and Peeper became a happy memory for my family.

It came as a total shock to me when, in 2019, an aging adult goose made his way back to my family home. At first, I thought it was just another goose. And yet, something about him seemed strangely familiar to me. The goose came back repeatedly. He did all of the same things Peeper used to, like trying to come in through the front door and sleeping in our back porch. Besides, this goose also responded to the name Peeper. Much to my surprise, my old best friend had returned, 18 years later.

I sat at the breakfast table with my four-year-old son, Matthew, trying to ignore the ache in my stomach. “Mama, want to play?” “Not today, baby,” I shook my head. These days I could barely get out of bed. I was still recovering from a surgery. I hoped for strength and happiness. But

the future seemed so hopeless.

Suddenly, Matthew jumped up from his spot on the kitchen floor. “Bird!” he shouted, rushing to our courtyard. Sure enough, there was a white dove seated in a rubber tree. It sat there for a few moments, and then flew away. Strange, I'd never seen one in our neighborhood before.

When I dragged myself to the kitchen the next morning, the dove was back. This time with a mate carrying twigs. “Look, Matthew,” I said, pointing to the tree. “They ’re going to make a nest.” The doves flew in and out of the courtyard all week, building on top of the rubber tree.

Matthew could hardly contain his excitement. Every morning, he'd run into the kitchen and take his spot by the sliding glass door, talking to the birds while they worked. His enthusiasm was influential. As much as I was grieving, I couldn't help but look forward to the doves' visits too.

Then it all went wrong. The courtyard was a safe enough spot for a nest, but the rubber tree's broad, thin leaves were far from stable. One night, a strong wind blew, throwing the doves' nest to the ground. I heard the twigs break apart.

I surveyed the damage. Nothing good ever lasts. I wouldn't blame the doves if they never came back. But they returned. And they paid no attention to the pile of sticks that had once been their nest. They started again from scratch. Again, though, the wind destroyed all their hard work. The next day, and the next, they renewed their efforts, as if nothing had happened.

Paragraph I:

I knew I had to do something.

Paragraph II:

“It works! The birds are back!” Matthew announced.

forward to, even in my darkest days. Now I was going to help them in return. I woke up the following morning with a plan. There was only an hour before the doves usually made their visits.

I hammered a shelf into the wall next to the rubber tree and covered it with leaves to make it look like a tree. Then Matthew and I stood by the sliding glass door, waiting and hoping.

“It works! The birds are back !” Matthew announced. There they were—sitting on top of the shelf, adding some twigs to the new nest despite damage from the strong wind. Three weeks later, we watched three chicks break free from their shells. “Chirp, chirp!” Matthew sang. I held him close and kissed him, feeling more positive and hopeful than I had in months. I realized all around me, life went on. And it was filled with wonders and surprises that I couldn't even imagine.

The day of the balloon festival, I felt as light as a hot-air balloon. This year I wouldn’t just be

watching. I’d be riding in Mr. J’s truck, following the flight of the balloon and meeting it when it came down.

It was a perfect day. Dad and I drove down the road, circled along the lake and turned into the field that was being used as a parking area. Dad pointed to the lake. “That’s where the balloon festival will take place.” he said. We came to a stop and I got out of the car. And then I saw it, a white bird with black stripes, brown head, and skinny legs. It screamed and beat its wings in the dirt in front of the cars that were driving downhills. Its wings looked broken. Suddenly it cried bitterly and flew off.

“Dad,” I called, but my father was watching the balloons.

“It’s a killdeer(北美喧鹆).” A silver-haired old woman said to me, adding that there must have been a nest here somewhere. “In the parking area?” I asked. She nodded firmly. “It was a nesting place before it became a parking area. No one told the killdeer about the balloon festival!”

“Jack!” Dad called “Isn’t it time you went down to meet Mr. J?”

“I have got to go.” I said to the woman but she pointed with her walking stick. There, on the ground was a perfect nest of eggs, looking like pebbles(卵石). They were almost in the path of cars, trucks and motorbikes.

Suddenly, the parent bird was back to its nest and its wings both twisted again. “Jack!” Dad called again. “The balloons are ready to fly.”

“Dad! I am…” A truck roared over the hill. Brakes(刹车) screamed and dust flew. “What’s

the matter?” asked Dad angrily from the truck.

On March 3, Eric Johnson was asleep when the family’s six-year-old Australian shepherd, Bella, woke him up. Bella was acting unpredictably, giving Johnson the sense that “something just didn’t feel right.” Bella sensed danger, and alerted the family to the tornado that soon destroyed their home.

When Johnson woke up, he turned on the TV and found out that a tornado was headed toward their town of Cookeville, Tennessee. He quickly grabbed his wife and their three children and put them in the bathtub. Nearly 45 minutes later, around 2:00 am, the tornado hit and destroyed the house. Johnson was thrown into the backyard.

Johnson said, “Bella was hiding under our bed when the tornado hit our house. She was thrown into our yard and survived and was missing after that. It was hard for us knowing she had survived but we couldn’t find her. She was the piece of our family that was missing.” The furious 175 mph twister destroyed everything in its path. The Johnsons would not have survived if not for Bella.

Johnson suffered a head injury and his wife had broken ribs, but they soon set about searching for their beloved heroic dog. They left pieces of clothing around the destroyed neighborhood, hoping that Bella would recognize the scent and find her way back home. Church friend and dog tracker Sarah Romeyn also joined in.

She borrowed cameras from a local animal rescue group and set them up in areas where people reported seeing her. She also worked with other dog trackers and even sought tips from residents with the help of the Putnam County Police Department.

When leads dried up, the Johnsons and Romeyn pressed on. “I was still finding time searching in parking lots, but it was tough. Because nobody had found a body, in rescue you can’t give up until you know you don’t have a positive outcome. And I hadn’t given up,” Romeyn said.

Paragraph 1:

In time, they found a glimmer of hope when Romeyn got a call from friend Karen Ritacco,

Paragraph 1:

In time, they found a glimmer of hope when Romeyn got a call from friend Karen Ritacco, who said that Bella was behind her shop. Romeyn enlisted the help of her husband, their pastor, and Eric Johnson to get Bella. When the team had Bella trapped in the enclosed space, the poor dog began to panic, until Johnson called out to her. Romeyn said, “It was heartbreaking. You could see her stop, and you could see the wheels turning. There was something so familiar.” Then something clicked, and she recognized Johnson. Bella was home.

Paragraph 2:

Romeyn was happy to play a part in the rescue, but also credits the community for their help. “I feel like our whole community had a part in bringing Bella back. I give it all to God. So many things had to come together to make this happen.” Now that Bella is back, the Johnsons are focusing on moving forward and plan to rebuild their property. The tornado may have destroyed all of their possessions, but Johnson is just grateful that their family is together again.

Everyone in our neighborhood knew who Ugly was. Ugly was a wild cat. Ugly loved three things in this world: fighting, eating garbage, and, shall we say, love. All these things had their effect on Ugly. He had only one eye and where the other should have been was a hole. He was also missing his ear on the same side, his left foot broke at one time, making him look like he was always turning the comer. Every time some one saw Ugly there was the same reaction. “That's one UGL Y cat!”

All the children were warned not to touch him, the adults threw rocks at him, shouted at him, watered him when he tried to come in their homes, or shut his paws in the door when he would not leave. Ugly always had the same reaction. If you watered him, he would stand there, getting wet all over until you gave up and quit. If you threw things at him, he would lie down crying for forgive ness. Whenever he saw children, he would come running, meowing, and bump his head against their hands, begging for their love. If you ever picked him up he would immediately suck (吮吸) on your shirt, hat, whatever he could find.

One day Ugly shared his love with the neighbor's dogs. They did not respond kindly, and Ugly was badly injured. From my apartment I could hear his screams, and I tried to rush to his aid. By the time I got to where he was lying, it was obvious Ugly's life was almost at an end. Ugly lay in a wet circle. He was bleeding badly. As I picked him up in my arms and tried to carry him home, I could hear him crying and could feel him struggling. It must be hurting terribly, I thought.

Then I felt a familiar sucking on my ear. Ugly, in so much pain, suffering and obviously dying, was trying to suck my ear. I pulled him closer to me, and he bumped my hand with his head, then he turned his one golden eye towards me. Even in the greatest pain, that ugly cat was asking only for a little love.

At that moment I thought Ugly was the most beautiful, loving creature I have ever seen. Never once did he try to bite or scratch me, or even try to get away from me, or struggle in any way. Ugly was kind to everyone he met but now he was dying in my arms. Ugly just looked up at me completely trusting me to relieve his pain.

Paragraph 2:

Ugly died in my arms before I could get inside, but I sat and held him for a long time afterwards. I was thinking about how an ugly-looking cat could so change my opinion about what it means to have true pureness of spirit, to love so totally and truly. Ugly taught me more about giving and love than a thousand books, lectures, or talk show specials ever could, and for that I will always be thankful. He was ugly outside but nice inside. It was time for me to learn to love truly and deeply, to give my total to those I cared for. Many people want to be richer, more

Last Sunday afternoon, Sandra and I were eager to meet up with a man on Detroit’s east side to help him get ready for a job interview this week. But on the way, we spotted a dog lying near the road next to his owner. We thought he’d been hit by a car. My friend, Sandra Abrahamian and I,

had assisted animal rescue groups before and we thought there might be something we could do, so we quickly pulled over to help.

His owner, a woman told us the dog’s name is Bosco, and she was walking him over a mile in the heat to her new home. She said Bosco was an outside dog and no one would give him a ride to her new place. That’s when she and a friend decided to walk the entire way. He was going from a life on a chain in one backyard to another. She said Bosco was having trouble breathing along the way, but they thought he could make it. But just a block away from their destination, Bosco fell down. We could tell he was suffering from heatstroke(中暑). She told us he had thrown up and could no longer stand. Bosco was out of breath quickly, his drool(口水) was also thick. Bosco’s owner said she wanted to give him away because she didn’t have time for him. She said he would never be allowed into her new “home” because her children have allergies(过敏症) and she worried he would dirty the carpet.

I made a call to Kristina Rinaldi of Detroit Dog Rescue to ask if they could help Bosco because it was clear that he was going to die without emergency care. To our happiness, Rinaldi said they could help. At once she told the people at Oakland Veterinary Referral Services that a dog which needed critical care was being rushed in and they must be ready to try their best to save him.

Paragraph 1:

Sandra drove while I stayed in the back seat trying to comfort Bosco. I thought we lost him a couple of times when he was seemingly out of breath and his eyes seemed to close. By the time we arrived, Bosco was wheeled into the animal care center to receive emergency care. Bosco was put on oxygen and was taken good care of by staff there and we waited anxiously for the dog to get out of danger. Rinaldi said another dog in Detroit Dog Rescue had already been named Bosco, and she wanted this new member to have a new name for his new life.

Paragraph 2:

So Bosco is now being called Roscoe, whose critical care and recovery were estimated to be several thousand dollars. It would be difficult for Roscoe’s new home to cover the costs as a non-profit organization. Thankfully, many people who knew Roscoe’s story on Detroit Dog Rescue’s Facebook page donated money to his care. With the help of supporters, Detroit Dog Rescue managed to make it. Once Roscoe was in a stable state, Sandra and I returned to our original mission, knowing we had already been given the chance to help one desperate soul.

It was one of the hottest days of the dry season. We had not seen rain in almost a month. The crops were dying. Cows had stopped giving milk. The streams were long gone back into the earth. I went back to make sandwiches, thinking that whatever he had been doing was completed. Moments later, however, he was once again walking in that slow purposeful long step toward the woods. This activity went on for over an hour: walking cautiously to the woods, then running back to the house. Finally, my curiosity got the best of me. I crept out of the house and followed him on his journey.

He was cupping both hands in front of him as he walked; being very careful not to spill(溅出) the water he held in them. I stepped close as he went into the woods. Branches and thorns slapped his little face but he did not try to avoid them. He might have a much greater purpose, I thought. As I came closer, I saw the most amazing sight. Several large deer stood in front of him. Billy walked right up to them, at the sight of which I almost screamed for him to get away. A huge buck (雄鹿) was dangerously close. But the buck neither threatened him nor even moved as Billy knelt down. And I saw a baby deer lying on the ground, obviously suffering from heavy loss of water and heat exhaustion, lifting its head with great effort to lap (舔) up the water cupped in my boy’s hands.

When the water was gone, Billy jumped up to run back to the house. I followed him back to the tap. Billy turned it on and began to cup both hands. He knelt down, letting the drip slowly fill up his “cup”. And now I knew what was going on. Obviously, was afraid of being scolded for wasting water, so he avoided asking me for help. When he stood up and turned back, I walked toward him. His eyes were filled with tears. “Mom, I’m not wasting.”

This time I joined him, with a small pot of water from the kitchen. I let him tend to the baby deer alone while I just helped fetch the water. As the tears that rolled down my face began to hit the ground, they were suddenly joined by other drops... and more drops... and more. I looked up at the sky. It was as if God, himself, was weeping with pride. I can’t believe it was raining!

When the water was gone, Billy jumped up to run back to the house.

This time I joined him, with a small pot of water from the kitchen这一句呼应

Mama and I spend mornings cleaning up the dirt that blows into our house. Mama says all the dust is due to the drought, not only here in the Oklahoma panhandle(狭长地带) but all over the Great Plains.

The dirt sifts into everything. It covers our clothes. We have to wash the dishes before each meal. It also slips into the automobiles horn (喇叭). Although Papa has fixed it, he fears the dust from the road will ruin the motor, So, we have to walk to school.

On the way to school, my sister, Faye, and I wear kerchiefs over our mouths so we don' t breathe in the dirt On days when the air is so bad that they close the school, we stay home and help Mama put sheets over the windows. But the dirt always finds a way in .

Last Sunday, there was no dirt in the air, only bright spring sunshine and a clear blue sky. After church, Papa headed out to the field to check on the cattle while Mama started dinner. Faye and I played in the yard. The temperature suddenly dropped-it felt good. The heat had been building since dawn.

Then Mama shouted from the house, “Iris, you and Faye get inside. Be quick!”

I looked to the west and saw a huge black cloud of dust, like thick smoke pouring out from a chimney. All the birds flew away. “Faye, go with Mama!” I shouted, “I’ll warn Papa.”

Faye raced, toward the house. The storm hit so fast, I barely saw her climb the porch steps.

Fine sand heaved against my face and in an instant the day turned into night. I stumbled over our bicycles left carelessly in the yard. I screamed for Papa, hoping my voice would lead him back.

The dirt and sand stung my skin like a thousand bees. I needed to get to shelter. Covering my face with one hand, I felt my way toward the automobile and I opened the door. Dirt flew in with me as I pulled the door closed. Papa was still out there! I needed to help him find the automobile. Worried as I was, I managed to calm myself down.
