三、Reading Comprehension(30 points,2 points for each item)从下列每篇短文 的问题后所给的四个选择项中选出一个最佳答案,并在答题卡上将相应的字母涂黑。

1. Tides are created mainly by the pull of the moon on the earth. The moon’s pull

causes water in the oceans to be a little deeper at a point closest to the moon and also at a point farthest from the moon, on the opposite side of the earth. These two

tidal “waves” follow the apparent movement of the moon around the earth and strike

nearly every coast line at intervals of about twelve hours and twentyfive minutes. After reaching a high point, the water level goes down gradually for a little more than six hours and then begins to rise toward a new high point. Hence, most coast lines have two tides a day, and the tides occur fifty minutes later each day. Differences in the coast line and in channels in the ocean bottom may change the time that the tidal wave reaches different points along the same coast line. The

difference in water level between high and low tide varies from day to day according to the relative positions of the sun and the moon. The sun also exerts a pull on the

earth, although it is only about half as strong as the pull of the tides arise higher and when they pull at right angles to one another, the tide is lower. The formation of the coast line and variations in the weather are additional factors which can affect the height of tides. Some sections of the coast are shaped in such a way as to cause much higher tides than are experienced in other areas. A strong wind blowing toward the shore may also cause tides to the higher.

(1). Which of the following is right according to the passage? (A). Some coast lines do not have two tides each day. (B). Tides are not affected by the shape of coast line. (C). The sun has as much effect on tides as does the moon (D). Tides usually rise to the same land day after day.

答案:A

(2).

The time that high tide occurs at a particular place is affected by all of

the following EXCEPT _______.

(A). (B). (C). (D).

2.

As the pace of life continues to increase, we are fast losing the art of relaxation. Once you are in the habit of rushing through life, being on the go from morning till night, it is hard to slow down. But relaxation is essential for a healthy mind and body.

Stress is a natural part of everyday life and there is no way to avoid it. In fact, it is not the bad thing it is often supposed to be. A certain amount of stress is vital to provide motivation and give purpose to life. It is only when the stress gets out of control that it can lead to poor performance and ill health.

The amount of stress a person can withstand depends very much on the individual. Some people are not afraid of stress, and such characters are obviously prime material for managerial responsibilities, others lose heart at the first sign of unusual difficulties. When exposed to stress, in whatever form, we react both

chemically and physically. In fact we make choice between “flight or fight” and in more primitive days the choices made the difference between life or death. The crises we meet today are unlikely to be so extreme, but however little the stress is, it involves the same response. It is when such a reaction lasts long, through continued exposure to stress, that health becomes endangered. Since we can’t remove stress from our lives (it would be unwise to do so even if we could),we need to find ways to deal with it.

used against them. It’s a race against time and against difficulties, with millions of lives in danger and the chances of winning not in man’s favour.

Malaria, it is true, has been practically wiped out in thirteen countries, including the United States, and is under attack in many others. But it is equally true that in some parts of the world certain types of malariacarrying mosquitoes have already learned to resist some of the sprays that formerly killed them. Other types of mosquitoes are not killed as quickly by present sprays as they once were.

The World Health Organization is helping national governments to get rid of malaria before resistance among the mosquito population becomes so great that new poisons will have to be found to replace those in use at present. Most of the countries in the world have started, or are planning, campaigns against mosquitoes. If the race against resistance is won by man, it is possible that ten years from now this old evil will have disappeared completely from the America, perhaps from the world.

automobile. Where there is a concentration of automobiles, as in our big cities, air pollution is severe. It is important to see that our cars are equipped with pollution—control devices. Such devices effectively reduce the harmful gases emitted(排放) from the engine.
