How many languages do you speak? One, maybe two, you say? Wrong! If you speak English, you use words from at least 35 foreign languages. Want proof? Read the next two sentences out loud:
“Jane saw a baby squirrel outside the window. Although she was still wearing her cotton pajamas, she hurried outside to look at it.”
There. You just spoke five languages – counting English! “Baby” comes from a Dutch word spelled the same way. “Squirrel” is French. “Cotton” was first an Arabic word and “pajamas” was taken right from the Urdu language of India. Surprised?
You shouldn?t be. Tim Morris is an English professor at the University of Texas, Arlington. He says that when we speak English, we?re using bits and pieces of many languages.
Dr. Morris asks his college English classes to count “loan words” – words we use that were taken directly from other languages. He jokes about the term “loan words.” “It seems unlikely that we?re going to give these words back after we?ve done with them, ” he says. “Imported words” might be a better term.
According to studies dong by Morris and others, simple English sentences may contain 15 percent or less of these “loan words.” Complex sentences may be 50 percent or more “imports.” Scientific papers might use mostly loan words. “We use imports constantly,” Morris says, “generally without any ides we are using them.”

You see the person?s familiar face in the car next to yours in traffic, across a movie theater lobby, in the crows at a football game. You look harder and longer, and wonder: “Is that who I think it is? … No, it couldn?t be…. But it sure looks like…. ”

Generally, the more popular the celebrity, the more frequent the comments, and is you happen to be one that looks like one of those celebrities, you must be ready for all the comments wherever you go.

Have you heard the expression “when pigs fly”? It is sometimes used as a colorful way of saying “never.” As far as anyone knows, no pig has ever flown, and none is likely to ever fly.
In September of 1783, however, a sheep did fly. This was in the days before airplanes and helicopters. Flying was something only birds did. Two Frenchmen, Etienne and Joseph Montgolfier, worked hard to change that.
The Montgolfier brothers were papermakers. They found that paper bags filled with smoke would float upwards. The brothers worked to make a bag big enough and strong enough to carry people up into the sky.
9
In June of 1783, they showed off their first big balloon. After they had made a large bag out of cloth and paper, they took it to the town square. Here they built a smoky fire with sheep?s wool and damp straw. As they forced smoked into the bags, it slowly rose to its full height of 110 feet (about the height of a 10-story building). When the balloon was full of smoke, the brothers released it. It floats up 6,000 feet and eventually came down to earth one and a half miles away.
The French Academy of Science asked the Montgolfier brothers to fly their balloon in Paris in front of the king and queen, Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. The brothers were so sure of success that they wanted a man to go up in the balloon. But scientists did not know if people could survive at such great heights. They decided that instead of risking human lives, three animals would be placed in a cage attached to the balloon.
On September 19,1783,a sheep, a duck, and a rooster rose 1,500 feet over the roofs of the king?s palace. For eight minutes they floated overhead as people on the ground pointed and clapped and cheered. The rooster?s wing was broken when the sheep stepped on it during the landing. So you think your dog is intelligent? You haven?t encountered Mackey, a two-and-a-half-year old black dog owned by Jeanette Depew of Argyle, Washington County.
He can add, subtract, multiply, divide, do card and magic tricks, guess the year of your birth. He reads minds – when asked.
When finished, he bows. He can balance biscuits on his nose, pop them in his mouth, make scarves disappear and reappear, and, just like a magician, can guess what card you are holding and the suit.
“He?s a very intelligent dog,” said Depew as she taught the large black dog through tricks for a group of onlookers at the Farmers Market at High Rock Pavilions.
People gaped in amazement, listening carefully to his barks as he responded to her questions. She looked him in the eyes as he answered questions on command.
Mackey doesn?t do stupid pet tricks. This animal is smart.
Depew obtained the dog as a puppy from a breeder while she was attending college last year. “I needed a companion. I didn?t expect he?d be doing things like this,” said Depew.
Depew took pictures and made two illustrated books of the dog at different stages – as a puppy, and as he grew, learning and performing new tricks. She learned about dog training through books and consulting the Internet, and has never taken a regular obedience class.
Since most of Mackey?s performances are indoors, being at the Farmers Market presented a challenge to his owner. As she asked him to bark the answer to 8 plus 5,his eyes darted to an ant scurrying across the ground. She quickly put him back on track. He barked 13 times loudly.
